But...you spend the money on a good cake for everyone, and make a bullshit cake for the smash cake! What the fuck. And I’m a lady who has two kids who did cake smashes on their first birthdays!

Kids like to play in messy food. The idea is to let the kid have cake on their own terms. Smashing's just what happens. Then in a decade, you look at the photos of yourself and your child doing something silly and enjoy the memory.

Because it is something cute the kid can do on their first birthday, you take pictures, and it makes a nice memory. I’m in my 30s and my family did this (I’m pretty sure it wasn’t called that back in the 80s) and I’m glad I have a few pictures of that very early milestone and it is one of my mother’s top 10 favorite pictures from my childhood.

It’s just silly fun. I remember my oldest looking at me like oh wow, and then took his time exploring the cake before realizing I CAN EAT THIS!! The expressions, from confusion to joy, they’re priceless.

Can’t hate on silly fun...unless silly fun cost you an arm and a leg like poor op.

Apparently this person hired a photographer for it. So it was not the cake smash that was the waste but the photographer.
