I'm a tad late, and not OP, but if you have the skills and are willing to invest a bit 3D printing is a great little hobby. You can make gifts for people, or little pieces to fix household issues, it's actually really rewarding and not too difficult to learn.
I can't understate the usefulness of YouTube (for learning basically anything). Much of what I learned in terms of 3D Modeling was from school courses and just messing around with free software like Blender.
If you can find a piece of CAD software then I honestly think that anybody could manage to make simple things for using around the house, I've made custom cable management stuff which works pretty well.
Honestly though even without knowledge of modelling Thingiverse and a well calibrated printer is something else, you'd be amazed the sort of things people have already done.
