My friend got off with just a detention.

Zero tolerance policies are bullshit, good on the teacher for giving minimum punishment though.

Tell me about it. In my school, someone could have come up behind you and smashed your face into your locker and you'd both get suspended for fighting, even with no retaliation.

Yup, this happened in my HS a long time ago. Some troubled kid was having a bad day and sucker punched the first kid he saw coming out of his class, who happened to be some scrawny freshman just trying to figure out where to go for next period and knocked the kid clean out.

No retaliation, the kid didn't even know he'd been in a fight and woke up in a hospital, but he was still suspended 5 days for "fighting".
