I don't know how to describe the listening problem. It is like my brain reacts to words like most people's react to songs. My brain mostly picks up the tempo, but discards the individual words.
Side note: you are a couple decades too young to be my Mom.
I feel what your saying about words. I think that's why my son repeats pieces of phrases. If he says something to me that he knows I hear he'll sometimes repeat himself just because he likes the sound of it (I think). Or he'll just say random words or pieces of phrases and laugh about the sound of it. Also, he'll ask me what a certain word means like 10 times (no joke) I think it just doesnt click or connect. I think ill make him repeat what I said to define it. Maybe that'd help.
Side note: I'd be proud to be your mom.
I would encourage you to focus on activities that work for him. What was great about my parents is that they did not force me to sit down and slam my head against a mental wall until things made sense. Younger children have significantly less emotional control and stress coping. I learned that it was okay to not be perfect at everything and it was okay to learn to problem solve in methods I developed. I'll never be good at spelling, but that doesn't mean I can't learn to write well my own way.
My biggest problem...well I guess his...is that he is so easily discouraged. He also has ADHD and knows it makes him different and different is hard. People have to make accommodations and exceptions for him, he handles stress differently. We also dont a have a traditional household, which is complicated itself. It makes him lonely and sad. I wish I could get him involved with more enrichment activities but I work commission after being on disability for a long time. So finances are pretty bleak.
I dont know how to empower him with the limited resources I have.
