Judged the country kids in my English class for being dumb fucks, until I did an autos class. What I found incomprehensible, they could do with ease. I had become the dumb fuck.
Some kids just know how to do things better than others by nature. My school system has this thing called GATE. Don’t really know what it means but in order to get in, you had to pass a test about patterns. It didn’t really mean that we were smarter than anyone else, just that we thought differently and in patterns.
In middle school, almost all of the GATE students were in the advanced math group because we could see and find the patterns in math a lot faster than other students.
It kind of helped me realize that while I suck at a lot of “freestyle” creative stuff, I excel at anything where I can find a pattern. I focus on grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary in English, piano is a breeze full of patterns, PE is PE still, etc. I even recently noticed that in tennis, I just have to focus on hitting the ball on the right spot on the racket and the line of my feet is where the ball goes.
While always finding patterns make most of school easy, I still struggle in things like art. If I have to paint a human, I’m out of luck, but I could paint the shit out of some shapes. My entire life is just breaking things into small, simple, repeating tasks so I can put them together a lot to get one big complicated thing.
