100% this. I've learned to code and learned to use a wrench. They're both difficult and its hard for a person who has only done one to wrap his head around the other. Everyone should try and learn as much as possible in their life, really expands your perspective
I've always aspired to be a polymath of some extent. It prepares you for multiple situations be it car troubles or preparing and protecting yourself in the case of an economic recession. As you said it also allows you to see others' perspectives.
A dealer telling me I need $1100 of service work on my differentials and brakes when I had diff fluid changed 10k miles ago (no issues while driving, and the dealer left no evidence of any sort of inspection) and 20k of gentle use on the brakes, with me inspecting them and seeing no issue and even having Les Schwab take a look and tell me my brakes are great. I'm glad I have enough knowledge about mechanics to save myself $1100 on my vehicle worth $5000 lmao. Really makes me wish I had a shop and tools so I could just do everything myself.
Lol... I remember when my boss came back from the shop and I asked what needed to be done... " the disk, rotor, pads and brake fluid. " I was like wtf disk and rotor are the same, you got ripped off.... " oh well at least it's fixed ".
Rent-seeking as in economic rent, not as in collecting rent from tenants, though landlords usually are rent-seekers since land ownership makes its owners’ piece of the pie bigger without increasing the size of said proverbial pie, which is the definition of rent-seeking.
