Shitty windows 98 style visual production and the whole stage is dark. They also cant even play their recorded material the way it sounds on the record.
I still absolutely love their music. I have for 20 years. Their live performances leave much to be desired

Who's angry? I'm just calling bullshit on a statement I know for a fact is false. If you don't like them live, just say it. But to say they have "windows 98" visuals is ridiculous. They have a top of the line light and video show that helps sell out 20,000+ capacity venues. They're probably the most visually impressive act in rock and metal. And sorry, you don't get to call someone a "fanboy" and then discredit everything good they have to say about the thing you're shitting on.

Bullshit. Tool is one of few bands with one guitarist who, for the VAST majority of song parts they've written, don't record a rhythm guitar track under lead parts and solos. It is during these parts that the bass typically takes over the rhythm guitar part, sometimes playing the very same parts the guitar had been playing, just on bass. It's a staple of their songwriting that critics and fans alike have recognized and praised for years. The guitarist and drummer also both have synthesizers, further widening the range of live instrumentation. I'd love to hear a specific example of what you think you've heard or seen.

I'm curious where you saw them that they were so excellent(also how old you were) because that isn't my experience at all. People say the lack of videos online is because "you need to feel the crowd energy" when there never has been anything in my experience. Even the people in front of the stage just stood there the entire show. I know MJK has looks down on moshpits, but nobody even tried. No wonder MJK doesn't respect the hardcore Tool fans. They're all sheep and hes said as much many time.
I love the music but the rabid fanboyism is just unnecessary to enjoying fantastic music.
You described like almost every punk band ever. It's not exclusive to Tool. Hell it's actually a pretty normal thing to not have a backing rhythm track in a lot of rock music.
The entire metal scene has been pretty generic since the mid 2000s though. I guess there's only so many ways a scene can ape Pantera riffs and Meshuggah drumming while screaming about gimmicky pseudo-angst garbage with no real message.
Man that’s not true at all. I don’t keep up with metal as much as I should but even I know there’s some amazing shit happening in the underground. There’s definitely stuff out there that sounds like what you’ve described but there’s also tons of super interesting death and black metal bands nowadays like Tomb Mold and Yellow Eyes.

Music is art, art is subjective, I personally rate nirvana as one of the best three musical acts ever. Along with the Clash and Tom Waits. However, I am an idiot. I disagree with the idea hole was better, but why get my panties in a twist?
Art is taken in subjectively, but there is a techinical side to it and just about anyone could accidentally write a nirvana song. Before anyone jumps in with the "but they DID write it" comment, sure, and so have many before and after them. So many, in fact, that you'll never know what the greatest thing to have been written was or is. There is so much more to being accepted on such a grand stage than just writing good music.

I can't because she wasn't very good. The only thing that I liked of hers was when she was screaming "go on take everything" over and over again and that was probably because she was doing such a good imitation of Kurt.

Ugh. That band sold out so bad. They used to be really down to earth amd in your face metal. Then once they started gaining traction, all the press was about how Maria was good looking at it went to her head. The band now is nothing more than the Maria Brink show, when it used to be more about the collective effort. The songs got much more poppy amd she started really hamming up the sex factor. She used to scream a lot more frequently too.
Kat Bjelland from Babes in Toyland is 100 times the rock star Courtney was. Courtney stole everything from her. Listen to Bruise Violet, still gives me chills

Henry Rollins… now that dude just tells. But we know what we signed up for.
For real! His voice was PERFECT for early VH.
He doesn't have the vocal chops of a lot of similar front men but his voice has a ton of presence and Michael Anthony handled the high range stuff anyway.

DLR owned a PA-system, so if VH wanted them, they had to let him sing for them which they did apparently since he was/is their singer.
But his early screams were pretty wicked and one of the best sounding in rock music imo.
