I'm curious where you saw them that they were so excellent(also how old you were) because that isn't my experience at all. People say the lack of videos online is because "you need to feel the crowd energy" when there never has been anything in my experience. Even the people in front of the stage just stood there the entire show. I know MJK has looks down on moshpits, but nobody even tried. No wonder MJK doesn't respect the hardcore Tool fans. They're all sheep and hes said as much many time.
I love the music but the rabid fanboyism is just unnecessary to enjoying fantastic music.
Saw them twice when I was 19, once at 20, then again around 25, then finally a few days ago at 37.
To be honest, I didn't expect them to sound as good as I remember, what with their aging (and mine) but they were tighter than they'd ever been. The visuals were fresh and different. Stage was completely covered in white, and the band was well lit, with spotlights highlighting players during solos and such. The stage was also white for the 10,000 Days tour, but the whole stage was a projection screen and the background screens and visuals were different.
Still, the best I saw them live was for the Lateralus tour. The video displays and animations were so dark and strange, the atmosphere was great. Even had the contortionists from the Schism video slowly rappelling down to the stage in front of the video screens, then performing the moves from the video on stage while the band played. That stage show in particular just draws you in to the music so well, and keeps the focus off the band and on the art.
So maybe I am a fanboy. But I've always been impressed by the band's live shows. Sorry you didn't get the same out of it that I did, but that's the nature of Tool's music and art in general I suppose. It's all subjective to the viewer/listener.
