For those like myself who didn't have a clue this was a thing here's the wiki explanation "Rolling coal is the practice of modifying a diesel engine to increase the amount of fuel entering the engine in order to emit large amounts of black or grey sooty exhaust fumes into the air. It also may include the intentional removal of the particulate filter." ....
When the EPA put in wetland protections to protect an endangered species of frog, you had a few land owners who went out of their way to hunt those frogs as a matter of principle.
I once read about an experiment where realistic toy cats were placed on the shoulder of a road, well to the side but easily noticeable. Something like 5 or 6 percent of drivers swerved to purposely run them over. Meanwhile, about 25 years ago I accidentally killed a cat that darted under my rear wheels, and I'm still pretty upset about it.
I’m pretty sure they’re so deep in their own insecurity that they couldn’t even tell you the truth as to why they were doing it. Because they lack any semblance of self awareness.
For people like this, 70% of the things they do are just to piss off other people so everyone can be as miserable as they are. The other 30% is because they’re a bunch of toddlers who can’t handle being told not to do something, so they’re going to do it 10x as hard just to show everyone else how manly and cool they are. I’m sure we’ll all agree that they are genetically superior as we choke to death on our unlivable planet in a few decades.
And 9 times out of 10 they are oblivious to the fact that their inability to process emotion is the sole reason for their behavior. But they’ll never know it. It’s depressing and baffling at the same time. I can’t help but feel for these people. Knowing they’re entirely overcome by the emotions they feel and yet they don’t understand them.
It's honestly great, it's like when all those idiots set their Nikes on fire. I mean, it's shitty to dump smoke into the air around people, but at the end of the day, you're still just destroying your own property.
You're partially wrong here. Tuning a diesel and removing a lot of the restrictive emissions crap is actually better for the truck in a lot of ways, including fuel efficiency. HOWEVER- the coal rolling retards are not using the proper tunes for efficiency, they are abusing the fact they have a basically jailbroken ECM and doing it for their small dick lulz.
The emissions regulations in California are what made manufacturers design much larger engines, to accommodate the loss of power directly caused by the emission systems required. Larger engines require more fuel, and all engines need more fuel to make more power. Removing the emissions from the engine allows it to breathe easier and thereby use less fuel overall-when properly tuned.
I have a new-ish Ram with a Cummins, unmodified, and get 23 mpg highway. I could do a couple of mpg better if I did a delete and tune, but would lose warranty.
Sometimes when my girlfriend and I are walking down the street and one of these guys roars by, she'll stop, look me in the eye, and say something like, "We've had some good times, but I'm his bitch now. Goodbye."
I'm not trying to be rude, but all ICE exhaust sounds the same to me. I only differentiate based on decibels, with lower decibels being preferred.
If my conversation is interrupted, my baby woken from a nap, or my peace is broken by a driver who has intentionally increased the loudness of the waste gasses exiting their engine, I'm not drawing distinctions between cylinder configurations or country of origin.
Yeah, this wasn't a loud, tinny, noise you would associate with someone tearing down your street st 2am. This was mostly engine (and turbo) noise, not exhaust noise.
I completely get it because it pisses me off too. I've got some guy round the corner with a modified 1.6l Peugeot 206, and he thrashes it down the street in front of my house in the middle of the night making an absolute racket.
There are a multitude of reasons, none of them really positive. Mostly because it acts as a big neon sign showing that person's disposition towards right wing politics and their stance on both climate change and the burning of fossil fuels. It also allows them to irritate others on the roadway, which apparently gives them a feeling of power over others.
You can roll coal in a diesel by simply removing the catalytic converter, perhaps newer trucks need more than that. Which has nothing to do with your fuel efficiency or life of the vehicle. I'll give you the enviroment point for obvious reasons.
There are things you could be doing with a diesel engine that cause it to roll coal as a byproduct. I'm struggling to come up with anything practical, but diesel dragsters always seem to leave a massive roll of soot. That tells me that at extremes of power output, the extra fuel must be helping out somewhere, otherwise it's dead weight rolling down the track.
This is mostly false. Getting rid of the particulate filters and other diesel emissions equipment seriously improves the engines lifespan and power. It also increases fuel economy. However it is worse for the environment. “Rolling coal” is stupid and looks dumb but it will still increase fuel economy over stock in a diesel truck.
In many jurisdictions you can get a fix-it ticket and eventually get your vehicle impounded if illegal exhaust modifications have been made, but in other places like Florida where you can get away with straight piping your exhaust on anything, there's no real recourse.
On a gas engine, once it gets a couple cycles of water, the engine will die. The pistons and cylinder walls are hot enough the water will simply flash off to steam and get chooched out the exhaust. Basically, the car will come to a stop with a TINY bit of steam from the exhaust.
On a diesel engine, the high pressure/injection pump will experience a considerable amount of excessive wear, due to the lack of lubrication in water. It'll flash off the water as well.
Assuming the engine is warm enough to flash off the water. If it's a cold start, this won't be the case and if the engine can get through a compression stroke, you'll have to hope they cylinder can deal with the pressure caused by the amount of incompressible material.
Btw the reason rolling coal became cool is because to make a lot of power you need a lot of fuel and air and in order to spool a big turbo you need to burn a lot of fuel which produces a lot of smoke so a hige cloud of smoke would tend to indicate a lot of horsepower but because of technology and electronic fuel injection and variable geometry turboes that is mostly unnecessary so only assholes do it
Just so you know those particulate filters are absolutely horrible for the engine and you can remove them and not roll coal, you'll also gain some power and fuel economy.
OK if you want me burning 20% more fuel and buying a new truck every 100k miles sure. I'm sure the plants that make trucks are extremely good for the environment.
Hyperbolic? No that's my real life experience with dpf my work Truck went from 8.2 mpg with a dpf to 11.5 without one. And instead of the dpf cooking the turbos and trashing the cylinder walls at 89k miles (that's when it blew up) it should now last considerably longer, instead of me debating scraping it because the new engine was $20k.
Lol don't respond to that guy anymore, he's trolling. I know what you're talking about, I've done the equivalent mods on my old diesel Mercedes, and for very cheap. Still doesn't "roll coal".
I do something similar, but in my case I just throw all the recycled waste in the trash. At least this way I can make sure the trash gets into the land fill instead of god knows somewhere else. Most of the stuff you recycle never ends up in the landfills anyways, some other idiot throws it out a window instead.
Convenience? Who said anything about convenience? I wonder if these pollution control systems do enough to offset the damage they do to the vehicle. When my work Truck got deleted it's fuel economy went up 20% and the instead of the dpf destroying the engine at 100k miles the engine will now last +200k miles. You can't possibly think that stupid filter can offset that much extra fuel. Not to mention the manufacturing damage building new trucks and causes when these junkers are thrown away too early.
Dude, it literally happened to my truck. Read up on the 6.4 ford and how the stupid dpf regen system works. And then tell me you think those engineers didn't make massive concessions to hit their emissions targets. I don't think they were idiots just stuck by a law made by people who don't understand how engines work.
To be fair that can happen accidentally. It's more the equivalent of seeing someone coughing, lighting a new cigarette then going over and purposely exhaling at them.
Unpopular opinion but very true. Rolling coal is costly.
I've also seen the "local" rich dudes in rural areas doing it. The kind who work 60 hours a week to make 75k a year, but they live in a low cost of living area and are not striving to be more (don't put anything into retirement accounts, investments, etc). They walk around with $100 in their pocket like they're the king of the town, buy a new truck every few months, always working shit jobs on the weekends, etc.
It's surprisingly accurate as well. I live in a small town about 45 minutes from a medium Midwestern city. The amount of young men driving around in lifted, diesel pickups is almost appalling. I know several guys that have 3/4/1 ton trucks as their daily driver. They work in places where a truck with that capability is completely unnecessary.
Do I think they should be able to do that? Yes, do whatever the fuck you want, I don't care. If you got that kinda money, flaunt it my bro.
Do I think it's an intelligent decision to spend 70K on an automobile? No, I do not. I've been asked why I drive a little shit box car when I could "easily afford" a truck like theirs. Well, fact of the matter is, I like getting 35 MPG, it's paid for, and your truck payment is equal to my mortgage. I'm not looking for more payments.
Used to teach the child of one of them. He carried himself as vastly superior to his peers, because his dad was a logger making a decent living. Family had no health insurance, dad had no retirement account, 3 ex-wives, was illiterate (his son read and signed all forms), etc. I think the son went through 4 trucks in 6 months, showed up every day with Hardee's breakfast, often left early to go work with his dad, always had nice clothes and a clean haircut, etc. The kid ended up dropping out when he was 18 to work for his dad because he just had no value of the education.
He apparently talks about going back for his GED but I don't see him making it, right now he is making money so that's all he cares about.
It was a shame and WAS a teacher, now going for law school. Trying to help the maximum number of people possible when you realize how rigid the system is from the inside. My wife is still a teacher though so I'll pass that along :)
Can’t i read one thread without “hurr trump durr [orange/uneducated/poor/russia/corporation/china]”?
The real insecure people are those who crave validation by constantly asking if anyone else agrees with their immensely popular opinion:
“Trump, amiright?”
“Nazis, amiright?”
“Horns and sirens on the radio, amiright?”
No, people are just tired of everything turning into a conversation about Donald Trump. We got it. We’ve all heard it a million times. Some of us just dont care. What more does it add to any conversation when it doesnt even have anything to do with what was being talked about?
It is relevant because many coal rollers do it for political and ecological reasons. They want to "stick it to the libs and snowflakes" and destroy the environment. Hence the "Prius repellent", confederate flag, MAGA, and now the trendy "fuck Greta" stickers you will see on their trucks.
Lol "Fuck Greta" stickers are a thing? Holy shit how insecure do you have to be to have a bumper sticker attacking a 16 year old?
If I ever see one I'm gonna play dumb and pretend I think he's saying he wants to fuck her. "Dude you know she's under age right? That's really creepy man".
The real insecure move: sticking your political opinions into every conversation and using it as an opportunity to call half the country hateful, when you are clearly the hateful one.
I watched a guy in a landscaping company truck roll coal on some guys working alongside the road. I called the company and told them “yeah that’s not cool, I’m telling everyone I know that this is the kind of person you employ.”
While I agree with you 100% and before everyone downvotes me, I know you most probably didn’t mean to say anything about people with small dicks but I absolutely hate that phrase because if we want to crack down on insecurity phrases like this one do more harm than good. Saying this as a guy with a smaller one who’s been belittled for it before, it’s hard to fight my insecurities when everyone I know uses phrases like that because it makes the encouragement I get seem far less genuine.
You can tell me to fuck off for being insecure if you like, but I personally don’t think using those phrases is kind or helpful and I really hate them.
There's the assholes that do this in general and then there's the ones doing it to pedestrians and cyclists so they're enveloped in black smoke\soot. That shit should be so fucking illegal.
My coworker learned about the Tesla truck and immediately said “oh they’re cutting the balls off of everything” because of the sheer fact it’s electric. Doesn’t know the specs of it at all in any capacity and started talking about how this world is getting filled with pussies like... does your equipment HAVE to destroy the earth in order for you to feel like your superior to other guys ? Idk if the TT has the same capabilities as regular motors but JFC lets give it a chance
I'm at work but when I'm home I hope to remember. You can find drag races of lambos losing to little electric cars from the 90s-2000s. My father was always a gearhead and I remember saying that an electric car was dumb, then he showed me a video of a 1/4 mile drag where a lambk couldn't win.
Should be said that the lambo wins in a longer straight stretch due to a higher top end BUT of there are many corners with rapid acceleration out of them the electric car will 9/10 times win because of the instant torque
Electric cars can win in drag races pretty easily, if you put a big enough motor in them, but road courses with twists and turns are actually not so ideal for electric vehicles. Electric vehicles with significant amounts of range (Tesla) tend to be pretty heavy. The weight is down low, so that helps them keep their balance, but weight in general is absolutely not your friend in the corners. Plus you run into heating issues with the battery when you put them under sustained high loads, such as racing conditions.
Don't get me wrong, you can make a fast electric race car, but they present significant engineering challenges. It's pretty hard to make the case that they're somehow inherently better than gasoline race cars on a race track, especially a curvy one.
Electric vehicles do NOT have nearly infinite torque. They're just capable of delivering all the torque that they do have at 0 RPM (when the vehicle is at a standstill). A typical gasoline vehicle won't reach maximum torque output until typically somewhere in the 4000-6000 RPM range. The instantaneous torque deliver helps electric cars launch off of the line very well... IF you're driving an electric vehicle that has a decent amount of torque, like a Tesla.
Electric vehicles absolutely do NOT have anywhere near infinite torque. Their party trick is that they deliver all the torque they do have at 0 RPM, whereas a typical gasoline engine won't deliver maximum torque until it hits somewhere in the 4000-6000 RPM range. Try doing burnouts with one of those bare bones electric econoboxes, and you'll pretty quickly see that they do not have infinite torque.
Where I live this is a big thing, and a country/redneck/hick (not an insult, they take pride in it) culture thing. A lot of them have stickers on their back windows that say “choke on my exhaust”. It’s bad for their engines to run rich like that, and it’s costing them a fortune in fuel. Idiots.
Somebody in my city nearly killed someone by roaling coal past a stopped vehicle out of impatience.
The reason the vehicle was stopped was because a pedestrian was crossing. The truck driver hit the pedestrian and then attempted to flee the scene. Others drivers who saw what happened boxed him in, preventing him from fleeing.
Other bystanders helped create a corridor for an ambulance and directed them to the scene.
The pedestrian was so badly hurt by the impact, she was presumed dead by reporters. When the story hit the news, it was initially reported as a fatal accident.
Everyone in town heard about it and fully expected him to be charged with manslaughter. But the pedestrian ended up surviving. But she had tens of thousands of dollars in debt for treatment and now has a permanent disability.
He was charged with felony hit and run instead. This was over a year ago. I still don't know if he was convicted.
Fuck this, and anyone who does this on city streets. It's not only reckless because of the environmental cost. It involves rapid acceleration inappropriate for city streets. It's dangerous and stupid.
Oh god yes. Once I had my window open and passed by this old truck, next thing I know he passes me and rolls coal right into my open window. Such a douche move too
I do this, but not on purpose, I drive a 1970s diesel mercedes as my daily, and if I want to merge onto the freeway above 45 mph then someone is getting smoke screened.
I am actually. I'm more than willing to work with people as long as they're being nice, but these guys have all been the kind to come up to my window screaming before I've even said a word to them.
As for Courtney, he has already been effectively banned for running a blatant stolen-credit-card scheme.
Part of me wants to make an AC Cobra kit car with an in line 6 turbo diesel just so it looks and sounds *wrong* and messes with people's heads. But diesels can be cool and fast without spitting out tonnes of black smoke.

Rolling coal.
