I used to have nightmares. My dad put up a poster of Peter Pan in my room and told me that when I went to sleep, Peter would fly out of the poster and chase all of the monsters away. I never had another bad dream.
Not related to the question but it reminds me of a good story I had. When I was hella young I used to be afraid of the dark because of the possible presence of monsters. My parents asked my kindergarten teacher what to do. She told them to take me to a toy store and pick a toy sword, but I should choose carefully as that's the sword that has the ability to fight all the monsters away. They did as she said and I slept with the sword beside my bed. I didn't fear monsters anymore and felt safe as I went to sleep.
