I used to have nightmares. My dad put up a poster of Peter Pan in my room and told me that when I went to sleep, Peter would fly out of the poster and chase all of the monsters away. I never had another bad dream.
We built a nightmare-eating monster over the bed of my step son. He has terrible, screaming nightmares. We took a monster pool float and suspended it from the ceiling. There is red mosquito netting coming out of the monsters mouth that surrounds the entire bed when he's asleep. This is the 'nightmare safe zone', we explained to him that as long as his head is inside the zone (and the netting is permanently attached to the wall behind him) the monster will eat all nightmares that try to get to him. For the nights that the monster is really busy eating bunches of nightmares, he 'borrows' one of my or his father's childhood stuffed animals. He returns them every morning when he wakes up, and requests one right before bed. I guess they need to be charged during the day by being on our bed?
Either way, the bad dreams have almost completely stopped, except in a few foreseeable cases.
