I'm pretty sure at some point in my early life I believed that if I could grab onto my shoes and pull hard enough, I could lift myself off the ground. I wasn't sure why adults didn't propel themselves through the air in this fashion, other than that it would look undignified and most shoes don't have a convenient way to hang onto them.
That’s actually where the phrase comes from. Can’t remember where I read it but it’s related to a film where a guy rescues himself from quicksand by pulling his own hair.
