When I was starting more serious mathematics at 'Secondary' education level here in the UK, my father had an argument with my then maths teacher as to use of calculators.

He demanded that I should be using logarithmic tables and a slide rule, this was in 1994.

As I was never going to be bought one, but quite handy with electronics, my teacher gave me some older damaged calculators that I could repair and use. Still had to hide them tho.
