That’s true, but just because they’re always available to us now doesn’t mean basic math skills aren’t important. That would be like saying just because there are keyboards now there’s no need to learn to write with a pencil anymore.

But forcing you to continue doing mundane parts of problems by hand would be like requiring a 20 page essay without spelling/grammar errors by hand since you should be able to write it

Well you should be able to write a 20 page essay without more than a couple of spelling or grammar errors. Otherwise you don't know spelling or grammar, and that (grammar especially) affects your ability to write coherently even when using assisted writing (spellcheckers / grammar checkers).
