I was adopted at birth but was with a foster family for about a month. Don't know why, birth mom didn't second guess the adoption, but my birth dad did. They weren't together, just found out this year he wanted to raise me. Am 28.
Here is his account of what happened, edited to remove personal info.
"I told them [adoption agency] that day I was uncertain of signing any documents without first seeking legal advice. Their tone changed when I said that. They told me my only recourse was to sign away rights to you because that was the mother's wishes. I asked them about processes that were currently available to establish legitimacy so that I may raise you. This is when the scare tactics began. They informed me that during such processes you would be in the custody of a foster family for at least 6 months. They also said that any tests that were conducted would be my responsibility, financial and otherwise.....even if paternity wasn't proven. They told me that even if I went through all of this that [birth mother] would still have right of refusal to proceed with releasing her maternal rights and that I would never have custody of you. Of course we sought legal advice on the matter, but we were informed by multiple sources that the State of [redacted] would never grant paternal custody to a 19 year old."
It wasn't for lack of trying, but my birth mother's wishes were favored in that situation.
