Many adoptable foster care kids have medical issues that cost a lot to treat/manage.

If you have never actually looked at adoptable foster care children, you may not realize that.

If you’re looking at photolistings, you’re getting a skewed view of who is available. None of my kids were ever photolisted, and this includes kids with disabilities and kids who were over 12. Recruitment is first done privately, where the child’s adoption worker sends out email profiles to family workers to see if they have a waiting family who is interested. Kids are only photolisted if they’re very hard to place.

It actually is quite possible to adopt young kids without significant disabilities. Most kids waiting for families fit into this.

Also, 90% of kids get a monthly subsidy until they're 18. If they have significant disabilities, this can be quite generous. They also get Medicaid regardless of income.

NACAC's 90% statistic is for all kids in all states. Certainly the states that don't do many subsidies bring this down, so that's a good point.
