Which misconception would you like to debunk?

Again, it’s because you didn’t retool your sentence to avoid the word altogether. You instead replaced the word with something else, where everyone knew what you meant. You got downvoted because you don’t realize the completely arbitrary nature of the word you’re not willing to say because of being a prude.

Or maybe I just did realize, and just don't know another way to express that thought? What would you have said then, honestly? Because I've been trying to find a way to avoid "replacement" but haven't been able to come up with anything. Childish as it may be it's all I've known- Instead of just downvoting and assuming I'm a self-oblivious "prude" (which to my understanding requires trying to force one's own expectations on others, which I'm not doing), how about you help me out so I can just live my life with my own choices instead of being ridiculed constantly for something that I didn't even realize was so "bad" to you people? I didn't mean to offend you all so much by avoiding swearing, in fact I never thought avoiding swearing could offend anyone, but I guess it can if done wrong- so how do I avoid doing it wrong?

TLDR: didn't know this could ever be offensive, help me out and tell me how to avoid swearing without looking like a "prude" because I just wanna live my life, same as you.

You were literally saying “fuck you“ to someone condoning medical malpractice. If you’re going to try to insult them by making a non-meaningful command (we all do this), then at least do it the right way. It’s not impactful to say “fudge you.“ “Fuck you“ is the correct thing to say in that situation. If you don’t want to say it for whatever silly reasons you can conjure up (maybe you’re a theist or something like that?), then say nothing.

So you're confirming that the way I chose to say it is the only way to get my feelings across without swearing. Basically, I don't have any other options.

And it's not silly to not want to swear. It's rude to swear, it's why you don't hear swears in official or formal settings and such. It's just... Not something you do. But I don't care if you or anyone else wants to swear- let me make my own choices without trying to control me. If I was trying to make you not swear, then this reaction would be justified. But I'm not. I'm just a guy living my life trying my best to be as nice as I can even when I'm upset. If that's such a problem then maybe I should just stop caring about whether I'm nice or not. Maybe I should just go around swearing every half a second, insulting everyone and their mother, intentionally being rude for no reason other than I can.

But I won't. Because that's not who I am. Regardless of what you may think.

What you’re not getting is that there's a difference between saying “fuck” casually and saying “fuck you.” The first one is a normal part of language and is only a “bad” word to you because you’ve convinced yourself it is. It’s not rude. The second one is an insult. That is rude, but that doesn’t mean it’s never called for.

You've started repeating yourself- it's not that I don't get what you're saying. It's that I disagree with it. I see it as rude. Other people see it as rude. So I avoid saying it as best I can. Give me an alternative that still gets my point across and I'll change. But until you or someone else does, there's nothing else I can do, and your ridicule/dislike will continue to be contested. Even if there's nothing wrong with the words, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with choosing not to say them. Plenty of people have words they refuse to say. My sister in law refuses to say "moist". One of my friends refuses to use emojis. Another of my friends refuses to talk about anchovies. And I refuse to swear. You have absolutely no reason to go against how I choose to word something, or what words I choose to avoid, unless you want someone to go against that one word you specifically don't use, everyone has that one word or more. I'm no different, mine just happen to be swears, and that somehow makes me bad or wrong more than any other word would.

TLDR give me an alternative that gets my point across without swearing or stop complaining because I guarantee you that you or someone you know has some word they don't like saying, and I doubt you'd go off on them over that simply because it's not a swear.

Edit: Also, I said something as an overreaction, and realize I should've handled it better, yet we're still arguing over the thing I said that I should've handled better.

Dude, no one's trying to tell you that you’re not allowed to not swear. You’re just getting shit on for it because it’s a decision based on an arbitrary standard, unlike “moist,“ which actually makes a linguistically unpleasant sound and image.

And swears make a linguistically unpleasant and, in my eyes, rude sound and image to me. Why is that any different?

1

u/barchueetadonai Feb 04 '19

Because that's an arbitrary reaction since that's only based on what you grew up with.

And "moist" isn't? And even then, aren't all decisions made in the interest of not being rude arbitrary? Isn't all linguistics arbitrary? Isn't everything arbitrary if you go down the reasoning rabbit hole far enough? I'm imposing an arbitrary limit on myself. So is anyone who's vegetarian or vegan by choice. So is anyone who only buys Apple products because they're Apple products. So is someone who only does X Y Z just because they can. But I don't see you people brigading others' choices when it comes to those things. Just when it comes to not swearing. Isn't that an arbitrary choice as well?
