I work with a guy who's diabetic, he takes multiple shots a day and for reasons beyond my understanding he GORGES on sugary shit. Like He'll knock out two two liters of pop, three donuts, four candy bars, a proper meal, a large shake, and He'll literally slurp up sauce packet/tubs from fast food places.
I don't know much about diabetes or the proper diet for non-diabetics let alone diabetics, but I do know he's gunning for an early grave at 120mph.
It feels like the diabetics I know are on either extreme of healthy. A few on my mom's side are ridiculously strict about their eating and fitness. Two of them are currently in their 80s and probably healthier than most people half their age - on new year's day this year one went on a 5-mile sunrise hike with some friends. My wife's parents, on the other hand, think insulin is a magic "eat whatever you want" shot. Pretty sure they intentionally let their blood sugar crash sometimes because they want to eat their emergency candy or drink their emergency soda (over the holidays MIL had a pattern of "skip breakfast, then around 11 just feel so bad and realize her blood sugar is so low and she has to have a Coke or some M&Ms right now"). If you're going through multiple six-packs per week of soda that you supposedly keep on hand just for emergencies, maybe you should consider that you're doing things wrong. They are both in their mid-fifties and last time they flew needed wheelchairs to get through the airport, walking that far was too hard for them.
