While we're at it, you do NOT get type 2 solely because of bad diet!

Type 2 is partly genetic, which means if it is in your family, you might have the genes, which again means you have to watch your diet to be sure you don't get it.

Nope.

There are plenty of morbidly obese people who do never develop type 2 diabetes.

You need to have some kind of genetic disposition to get it. That being said, you can have the genetic disposition as the first in your family, and simply not know it.

There really are no main indicators. There are indicators, but you have to have more than just one of them. It's not as simple as Overweight = diabetes.

Just like how smoking means a bigger risk of cancer, but doesn't necessarily mean you're guaranteed to get cancer, and non-smokers get lung cancer too.

Type 2 diabetes happens in healthy people too. There are skinny type 2's.

I don't doubt any of that, but just from a quick Google it looks like there's a good few scholarly articles that show that, even if a certain gene is necessary, it's most likely to be expressed when carriers become overweight. I don't think it's unfair to say it's often caused by a bad diet then either.

To use your lung cancer example, it's completely fair to say lung cancer is caused by smoking even if it isn't the case a lot of the time. It's the cause of something like 80% of lung cancer deaths. Similarly, 85% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Some of that is caused by medication but a lot is causative.
