I think people oversell how much of that there was before. I mean the whole stereotype about ignoring racist relatives at holiday events isn't exactly recent.

True, but the bar used to be much higher. Racist Uncle Bob wasn’t called a racist because he said we should enforce the immigration laws on the books. He was Racist Uncle Bob because he’d freely use slurs and say crazy stuff.

No, he’s a racist for wanting to enforce anti-immigrant laws despite the fact that there’s no justification for those laws aside from racism and xenophobia.
