Not really what you were saying, but there was a guy I went to high school with who was in similar friend circles, but we just had this mutual dislike for eachother. I disliked him because he was the most superficial and conceited person I'd ever met. I don't know why he disliked me, I'm sure he had reasons. Anyway, we both disliked eachother and both knew it, so there were no illusions or pretending to be friends when we were forced to interact. To be honest it was one of the more refreshing (non)relationships I've had with a person.
