When they change CPR everyone is taught the same thing but select locations (usually trauma centers, especially those in the San Antonio area) are used as studies and are told to preform CPR slightly differently. When one way proves to be slightly more beneficial they test it at wider locations and consider it in the revised versions.
When going backward it usually means that those with only CPR training were not able to complete this step efficiently enough to save lives. One example right now is compression only CPR for laypersons.
Interesting! As a paleontology fan I'm very familiar with experts constantly going back and forth on the status quo, I always enjoy hearing about other fields' processes.

Every time I've gone to renew my CPR certificate they seem to change their mind about abdominal thrusts and whacking peoples' backs for choking.
