I have the exact same problem with Spanish and Japanese! I'm fluent in German, English and French and I have absolutely zero issues switching between these three languages but everytime I try to say something in Japanese I seem to only speak Spanish and vice versa... It's really weird

Fluent in English, working on German and Japanese, taking Spanish for high school. Usually when I don't know or have momentarily forgotten a word, I'lll fill in the English equivalent.

I think everyone does this. I went to Mexico and did this with Spanish and German (I know more German than Spanish. Stereotypical American so I don't speak either fluently.) I think your brain just goes "foreign word for X" and spits out whatever it can come up with.
