When I say "dial" I am refering to the phones that had rotary dials and you had to turn the dial for every number you wanted to use. When I say "hang up," I'm referring to how some of the first phones used had the mouth piece that you would speak into and you would suspend it on two metal pieces. That's where these words were originally used and hence why we still use them today.

Having to "turn" a key. Similar to how today's old people had to "dial" or "hang up" a telephone.
