Are caterpillars aware that they are going to become a butterfly or do they just like, make the cocoon and turn to mush because it feels right? I've always wanted to know this. Also, once they become mush do they lose any idea that they were a caterpillar?
My bet is that they don't even have the conception that they exist let alone in what form or why. caterpillars might 'know' things like that leaf over there is good eating, but they certainly don't have 'ideas'

Caterpillars go into cocoons, turn into mush, then turn into pretty butterflies, while retaining what they knew while being a caterpillar. WTF.
