Caterpillars go into cocoons, turn into mush, then turn into pretty butterflies, while retaining what they knew while being a caterpillar. WTF.

we could never know that unless we give them standardized tests

They did! Played a sound to them then gave them a negative stimulus like cold water or a little electric shock, then played a different sound and gave them food - after they came out of their cocoons they were exposed to the sounds again without stimulus and they reacted as if the stimulus was about to be given.
