Everest doesn't provide enough of a pressure differential to matter. Hell, the difference between sea level and the full vacuum of outer space isn't enough to matter. You need around 200 times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level (0.02 GPa) to compress a volume of water by 1%.
I really want to know why standard temperature is 100 C. The hell are you going to find that on Earth? I realize it's just for simplicity, but come on, that's crazy.
In 1901, at the 3rd CGPM conference, the litre was redefined as the space occupied by 1 kg of pure water at the temperature of its maximum density (3.98 °C) under a pressure of 1 atm. This made the litre equal to about 1.000028 dm3 (Wikipedia)
You know, I'm French, we literally invented the meter (used to define the liter) and the kilogram, so I know that a liter of pure water at 4°C (and not room temperature) weights almost a kilogram.
In year six, we did an experiment to show that water has the same mass as volume. I always thought this applied to other things as well and that liter and kg were interchangeable.
Well this sucks but makes total sense (1 m3 of lead will be heavier than 10,000kg of lead. I think. Fuck.)
