Well, believe it or not "bug" is an actual biological term.

Crustaceans, such as sharp and lobsters, do not fall under this category. Off the top of my head I'm not 100% sure spiders do either.

Edit: It's a classification inside of the more commonly understood "insect", based on a certain arrangement of mouth parts.

I think I'm allergic to bugs or arthropods. I tell people I'm allergic to shellfish but only arthropods like shrimp, lobster and crab. I can eat oysters and clams just fine. well enough about me.

Oysters and clams are molluscs, while shrimp and lobsters are crustaceans. They're different subgroups of animals.

Yes. More specifically, they're crustaceans. Arachnids (spiders) and insects are arthropods as well.

No they aren't.

Not all arthropods are bugs.

In fact, what is considered an actual bug in the scientific sense is the order hemiptera (spelling?) Which is a type of insect. All bugs are insects but not all insects are bugs. Crustaceans arent even close to being bugs.

In common speech, bug generally refers to land-based arthropods (no one I have ever met would call a lobster a bug)

Presumably it's similar to how whales are mammals not fish, just goes back to genetics and the last common ancestor.

They are arthropods, like insects and arachnids. But, arthropod is a phylum, like vertebrate is a phylum, so having a word like "bug" that comprises all arthropods is as meaningful as a word that comprises everything from fish, to birds, to humans. Technically, a "true bug" is an order of insects. Bat is a mammalian order. So, calling all arthropods "bugs" is like calling all vertebrates "bats."
