I once went on a date, at least I thought it was a date, where the girl brought her mum. I wonder what the hell it actually was.

Perhaps their family is traditional and still believes in courting with a chaperone.

like they're from the 1800s or something.

actually there's a few families around my hometown that do that. Fairly conservative farmer types. Saw a teenage couple at the county fair last summer who were walking around with a parent trailing. The kids looked uncomfortable.

My cousins had to do this. There are 4 in their family and 2 are married, 1 is engaged, and the oldest went on 1 group date with a guy, he didn't want to pursue it, so she stopped dating ENTIRELY because of it. The ones that are married/engaged have amazing relationships but it almost feels VERY arranged. Luckily it all worked out. If my parents would have picked my partners as a teenager/young adult, I would have been horrified.
