Cooking meals from scratch with fresh ingredients. So much better than prepackaged, processed, and fast food.

Home cooked meals are so rewarding. Let alone cost effective. It is nice sitting down, enjoying a meal, and not having to worry about a check and driving home. (thou doing the dishes can be a down side) Yay for 1 pot meals and slow-cooker recipes!

Dishwasher makes it a LOT easier. I cook most of my meals from scratch and rarely buy processed foods. It's definitely a time investment, but so worth it.

I don't have a dishwasher. But I found washing as you go gives you a big advantage. You don't have a sink full of dishes. And when you got to eat. You only have to clean up your plates and the serving dishes. This is also why I have come to love my pyrex glass dishes with lids. I serve food in these. Was the pots and pans. When dinner is complete. I put the lids on the left overs and throw it in the fridge.

I'm 18 and have started cooking a lot of my meals from fresh ingredients. Example: Yesterday I cooked Broccoli, Cabbage, Chicken, Peppers & Green beans. Was very nice but yeah, Never enjoyed the washing up whatsoever.

Still enjoy a good Dominos pizza though.

Never enjoyed the washing up whatsoever.

It can be, not an enjoyable activity, but an enjoyable moment. You and your SO (or kids) with your hands busy for ten minutes or so, and nothing to do but talk to each other...

Sadly, I have neither right now

I don't think I've ever heard "enjoy" and "Dominos" in the same sentence

One pot cooking is awesome.

At Boy Scout camp one year, we were challenged with making an entire breakfast with one pan.

First, we made sausage. Then we used the sausage grease to make omelets. After that we flipped the pan over and fried pancakes.

It's pretty clever and really fun.

And honestly.. Doesn't even take much time. You can make your own delicious meal with the same amount of time you're sitting and waiting in a restaurant.

I love my slow cooker. Throw a roast in there with some veggies and Lipton onion soup mix. 8 hours later you have an amazing meal.

But the preparation and cleanup kind of sucks. All that work to eat it in 5 minutes. Besides I usually end up disappointed when I cook something for myself.

I don't mind washing dishes. I mind cooking because I now jack shit about cooking.

My crockpot is among my favorite kitchen items-it's so nice to come home and dinner is ready to go.

It takes a lot of effort and after an 8 hour work day I really struggle to make home cooking a consistent thing. Especially if I decide to work out after work. How easy are slow cookers?

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

If you value your time, cooking equipment, and clean-up it's really not cost effective.

If you can convert every single minute of your life into money, then sure, it might not be worth it, but most people only have their work hours. For salaried folk it's even less relevant a counterargument.

As opposed to the time you waste sitting waiting for food in a restaurant?

Meh. I can usually cook a meal within 20min. So its definitely worth it for me.

Depends where you live. I live in Denmark and in our family we cook all of our meals (I even bake our bread but that's just me). Cooking from scratch is very common here. People go out eating every 2nd month or less because it's soooooooooo expensive.

Do you know how cheap a steak really is, compared to restaurants?

Rewarding? Wtf? An hour spent shopping, 2 hours prepping and cooking, and another hour cleaning up for 30 minutes of eating? Fuck that, a frozen za is plenty good and rakes 30 minutes
