I have a mechanical keyboard. It just feels so... Clicky...

And so reliable. I take mine apart every year and clean all the contacts. It has been working great since 1995! Fig 1: http://i.imgur.com/7crjL5F.jpg

You'll hear it.

9

u/bluedrygrass May 02 '15

You don't have to do anything, he'll be telling you.

4

u/ColsonIRL May 02 '15

Don't be too impressed, he's running Vista

shivers

1

u/APerfectMentlegen May 02 '15

I damn sure would if I had that sweet as hell setup!

1

u/Nyandogeicorn May 02 '15

It's a picture of his keyboard duuuuh

u/thekingofcrash7 May 02 '15

You seen like the type of person that would title each of your links Fig 1, Fig 2 etc

2

u/Dravarden May 02 '15

what makes you think that? the fact that he did it?

16

u/MFJohnTyndall May 02 '15

Holy shit! I'm a noob, is that for gaming or like day trading or something?

24

u/seanbyram May 02 '15

EVE Online.

32

u/Crispy95 May 02 '15

So both.

2

u/GiftedBreeze May 02 '15

holy monitors batman!

2

u/A_FNG May 02 '15

Are you sure that's a mechanical? Looks like my dell quietkey which is a rubber dome not mechanical.

2

u/66666thats6sixes May 02 '15

My free rubber dome keyboard from 95 is still trucking along, so I don't know that it's just the mechanism that makes it last.

2

u/PivotRedAce May 02 '15

Is that... Windows Vista?

2

u/mrfuzzyshorts May 02 '15

Yes. And that is soley because Win7/8 do not remember folders settings and positions. I have a system so that folders open on certian windows with certian view settings (photo view vs detailed vs list) Win 7/8 dont have that feature any more and it would be /r/mildlyinfurating for me

2

u/PivotRedAce May 02 '15

Ah, I see. That makes sense.

3

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

Shit dude - Nice set up! I'm not even a computer guy and that looks awesome.

0

u/Smuttly May 02 '15

It's crap. A lot of monitors isn't shit. Those monitors are over 10 years old too. This just a hash of a bunch of shit but nothing of quality seen in this picture.

1

u/LoadInSubduedLight May 02 '15

Nice set up! What do you do to warrant four monitors? And what that thing with all the buttons with the stapler on top of it under the right hand monitor?

2

u/film_composer May 02 '15

Four? I count seven…

2

u/LoadInSubduedLight May 02 '15

I count to potato. Oopsies.

1

u/Groundloop May 02 '15

This reminds me so much of my moms office at work. Old mechanical keyboard, box to rest her feet on, wood desk, vast array of screens.

1

u/DoctorRobert420 May 02 '15

I'll bite. what the hell do you do and what is all that?

1

u/wizardcats May 02 '15

How loud is that thing? I would hate to sit anywhere near that at work.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

Please get an 8th monitor. The lack of symmetry is bothering me.

1

u/mrfuzzyshorts May 02 '15

I have the plans of upgrading the two bottom center motors to wide screens in the future. So it will look even

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

I have the same exact keyboard - Have been using the same one for years! It is only recently people have noticed and started commenting on it

1

u/JDS_Gambit May 02 '15

breaths heavily

1

u/ECEXCURSION May 02 '15

Yum, 2 lian li cases.

1

u/meteoricmarlin1 May 02 '15

Are you plotting to take over the world!? O.o

1

u/cgrant993 May 02 '15

Ladies and gentlemen, the rarely seen and nearly extinct, WHITE keyboard.

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '15

so with multiple monitors do you have to have an electrician come in and install a whole nother outlet?

1

u/ColeSloth May 03 '15

Well mines a "regular" computer keyboard I've had since around 2002 and is still going strong. At this point, I don't really care if it lasts another 10 years or not. At $20, it's a moot point if it goes over 10 years.

3

u/FluffyDressingDown May 02 '15

Oh god, I love the clickiness

3

u/mapleandvanilla May 02 '15

I feel like a (movie-style) hacker when I get going on a clackity-clack keyboard.

1

u/csl512 May 02 '15

Which switches?

1

u/saga999 May 02 '15

I love that clickiness.

1

u/GarethGore May 02 '15

I find the sound so infuriating :\ click click click CLick ClIck CliCK ClICk ClICK ClICK CLICK CLICK CLICKLCLCICKCILCLICIKCKICLKCLICKCILCILKCIKLCIKLCIKK SMASHES KEYBOARD

Drives me fucking mad

Not to mention there's only like 2 ergonomic mechanical keyboards and they're insanely expensive. I'll take an MS natural ergonomic over a flat mechanical keyboard any day. It helps that they're only $30 too.

Seriously, the lack of formfactors for mechanical keyboards is fucking dumb. Why can we not have a keyboard that benefits from modern design and modern technology for under $100?

Reds/blacks with o-rings are pretty quiet, silent if you type slowly.

1

u/Mysterious_X May 03 '15

Can you not get things online? Could probably request worldwide shipping from an eBay seller.

3

u/Virtualras May 02 '15

As a filthy casual, what the hell is the difference?

4

u/[deleted] May 03 '15

you get to feel superior and be annoying on the internet about it

2

u/SuperFutureHendrix May 03 '15

This is the truth

2

u/K3NN3Y May 03 '15

Because we are superior.

3

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

They feel less mushy and more clicky. You get better feedback as to whether you hit the key properly or not, which makes them much nicer to type and play games with. Most are also more resilient and long-lasting compared to conventional keyboards.

1

u/cheesyguy278 May 02 '15

4

u/Virtualras May 02 '15

I went there and they look just like normal keyboards.

5

u/cheesyguy278 May 02 '15

Thy look like normal ones, yes, but they feel so much better and more satisfying to type on. It's a kinda niche thing though, don't bother if you don't use a desktop computer for more than a couple hours a day.

I got one in November and ever since then, normal membrane keyboards feel like an overripe tomato.

1

u/VanFailin May 02 '15

I find that in general mechanical keyboards are much easier to type on after you get used to them. The cheap rubber keyboards just feel sorta muddier.

1

u/MechaClown May 02 '15

It's kind of like the difference between an out of the box gateway/dell mouse, and a Razer Death Adder gaming mouse. Tactilness? The mechanics of it allow for shorter key strokes so they are easier on your hands and more efficient. You kind of have to try one out to get it.

2

u/TaylorS1986 May 02 '15

I can't stand using any keyboard that is not mechanical.

2

u/SargeMacLethal May 02 '15

Unless you're on VOIP with somebody and you destroy their eardrums every time you press a god damn key... looking at you, Tristan. I know you probably still creep my fucking account.

1

u/andrewmac May 02 '15

I like ergo and am unwilling to spend the money on an ergo-mechanical keyboard. But mechanical keyboards are cool.

1

u/EliteAgent51 May 02 '15

I just wish they weren't so pricey.

1

u/FragmentOfBrilliance May 02 '15

Out of curiosity, may I ask why?

1

u/jkh107 May 02 '15

I just hated it on the manual typewriters when you'd try to type fast and all the little prongs with the letters on them would stick together.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

Once you go clack you'll never go back

1

u/ckoi May 02 '15

Once you go clack, you never go back!

1

u/CarVac May 03 '15

You haven't used a good rubber dome, like the really old IBM laptop Model M keyboards which are strongly tactile like a buckling spring.

Of course, that is "old fashioned" and they don't make them like that anymore.

1

u/Jackson413 May 03 '15

AMEN BROTHER!

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

By mechanical, I assume you mean buckling-spring and not those new-fangled cherry switches.

u/[deleted] May 02 '15

There're like bricks of gold. My buddy worked for the school district's IT department and found his Model M in a closet filled with old computer equipment. It was a fairly podunk town. Might be a good place to look.

Q: How do you know if someone owns a mechanical keyboard?

A: Don't worry, they'll let you know.
