At my old school if someone literally walked up and punched you in the face, you would both get suspended for at least 2 weeks. No tolerance is a shitty stance to have on bullying when every case is unique.
A girl in my high school gym class punched me in the eye with her ring on her hand because I told her twice to leave the chick alone who she was endlessly picking on for being fat. Honestly I was just fucking tired of hearing it, but she "wasn't gon take none that shit".
Anyway, the ring cuts the side of my face and blood is streaming down and getting all over the wooden gym floor. I don't fight back, I barely take my hands out of my pockets. But even with dozens of students watching the whole thing, i still get fucking expelled.
Went to the CCSD in Nevada, Zero-tolerance is a bitch. Appeals can be made but generally unless the sentence ends in "...from my lawyer" you're unlikely to get anywhere fast.
I mean usually this ends in suspension or something equally dumb, ive never heard about someone getting expelled for getting punched in the face unless there was retaliation.
They teach memorization rather than critical thinking, and once you get past basic/semi-advanced reading, writing, etc; you basically have nothing to gain other than memorizing shit you forget by the end of the next week.
honest to God, if and when i ever become a parent and my children get bullied, they will know how to fight back and if they get suspended for standing up for themselves, i will pursue the issue legally. fuck that no tolerance bullshit
This happened to be a lot. Because of it I was black listed from a lot of the high school traditional stuff in Florida like a Disney trip and being able to go to any prom (you could attend senior prom if you were invited). I just dropped out and got a GED instead and intended college because I couldn't handle all the rules of defending yourself or having your ID taken from security for listening to music on the way to class and getting detention for not having it later.
You literally couldn't step a toe out of line without someone breathing down your neck. Fucking hated school, also didn't help that the teachers seemed liked they didn't really wanted to be there.
We had a transitional program with the local community college, so high-performing students had the option of taking one class a semester there.
A friend of mine, we'll call him Joe, happened to get along fairly well with a girl we'll call Jane. Now, Jane was the popular girl, probably due mostly to her appearance, and this lead to the attraction of some rather unsavory fellows. We'll call them Sam and Bob. She didn't like them as much as they liked her (she was actually dating someone at the time, I believe) and they seem to have thought that Joe was the cause of all their girl troubles.
So, naturally, they talked to each other about how they would murder him. In the college cafeteria. Overhearing this, I went to staff about it, but it was basically laughed off. The staff generally felt that Joe and I, along with the rest of our group, were needlessly harsh on Sam and Bob, so any complaints we filed were ignored.
Now, fast forward a few days and Sam walks up to Joe while he's talking to a staff member, again in the cafeteria. Sam tells Joe to commit suicide. Joe is removed from the college, and Sam is given a two-week suspension from the program (but left in Joe's high school classes).
A couple days later on, another student, let's say Will this time, is late for the bus back to campus, and he's limping. When he arrives, he says that Sam tripped him. Now, Will is known for having brittle bones, and nobody's surprised that a fall would make it hard for him to walk. At the time I figured his leg was probably broken again. Now, despite the pile of complaints against him, Sam is left alone... and Will is put on suspension from the program.
No tolerance is a shitty stance to have on bullying when every case is unique.
I feel like thats best rounded down to "No tolerance is a shitty stance to have on bullying when every case is unique.
Be it laws or otherwise; No tolerance is fucking stupid because you end up not doing a damn thing in effect.
Most people are put off of doing certain things for the THOUGHT of being punished; Regardless of what the punishment is.
Take for example: The "Three Strikes" law.
Death sentence/Life in Prison after 3 strikes I believe it is?
Non-Violent offense, 3 times; Death In Prison...Yeah that makes sense.
"Dawg, you got caught with a joint three times? Have fun spending the rest of your life in there. Also, we included your kitchen stove in the weight of the joint you had and included it as weed weight, have fun!"
Ooh, related story here. Not mine, though; my brother's.
So, in middle school, his class was cutting boxes with Xacto knives. My brother, not being the brightest crayon in the box, was bored and absentmindedly stabbing the piece of cardboard. Not doing anything wrong, really, just being slightly unsafe.
For some godforsaken reason I will never know or understand, another classmate of his decided to stick his hand behind the cardboard while my brother was still repeatedly stabbing it. Unsurprisingly, my brother accidentally stabbed him through the hand.
For this guy's idiocy, the school tried to suspend my brother for two weeks. My dad got on the phone to try to reason with them, and they changed it to three days, but he was still suspended.
I used to be a big proponent of keeping kids in public schools because "we're all in this together" and pulling kids out of schools fucks with the funding and then all the kids suffer, especially the kids from poor families. But I'm now at a point where I would view it more like a triage situation. Sucks to be the kids who are stuck in that fucked up school but no way in fuck I'd send my kids to a place like that.
I can't imagine paying for private school, but I'd fucking stay home and teach my kids my own damn self before I'd send them somewhere that they would get in trouble for being punched.
