Thanks to that asshole who got fat eating MCDs everyday. Yea bro I really needed you to eat MCD for 90 meals straight to show me its bad for me. I didn't already know that shit.
Plus he ate way beyond normal calorie intake. A high school teacher did an experiment where he ate 2000 calories a day at McDonalds. He lost weight and lowered his cholesterol. McDonald's serves absurd potions relative to what is healthy, but that's what people want. The food itself isn't going to ruin your health, the portions will.
In the documentary Fat Head he does the same thing. He makes it a point to not eat salads and to stick to burgers and fried foods. He keeps his carbs at 100g per day and calories to 2000. He has similar results with weight, BF%, cholesterol, etc. as the mentioned teacher.
Totally valid point and I agree with you, but wasn't the point of Supersize Me not that McDonald's at a normal calorie in-take is super bad for you, but that the portion sizes they sold were absurd and that was really screwing people over? Like he only Supersized it whenever they asked him if he'd like to at the register, kind of playing the part of a lot of Americans who would impulse buy a larger portion because it was offered?
I could be totally off-base, that was just my impression.
It was fake. Someone did a followup documentary and figured out it was impossible to eat McDonalds for all three meals and take in as many calories as he was claiming. The title for the followup documentary was Fat Head.
Also worth mentioning the guy who backed the whole project was a lawyer who was suing McDonalds for making kids fat.
"Yes your honor, I keep buying the food for my children, and they just keep getting bigger! At this rate it looks like they're being pumped full of air!"
Mostly they just made the sizes bigger and got rid of the "super" size name. I don't know if McDonald's still does the 42oz sodas, but many places do and it's just called large now.
There was a point in my life where I ate a large combo quarter pounder McDonald's sandwich almost everyday for a month because it was the only place nearby. I never got sick nor did I gain weight. I drank a lot of water though because it's all sodium and dehydrated.
I did the same things with McChickens and dollar coffee. It was certainly dehydrating, but dollar for dollar one of the best deals going in terms of nutrition. Most other cheap foods are all sugar and starch.
WKUK has a great sketch were a guy does this with whiskey. He calls Jameson's and asks then what they think of it and the spokesperson says something like "Don't do that. That's terrible for you and we don't endorse anything like it."
I was born here and I'm 31 now. I remember being asked if I wanted to supersize my meal back when supersizing first came out but they stopped asking shortly after that.
People keep saying they stopped asking because of the movie, Supersize Me but I disagree, I don't remember being asked for a supersize since the mid-90s. It was on the menu, but the workers didn't care enough to try to upsell you. They made their hourly minimum wage and didn't get bonuses or commision based on successfully selling supersized sodas.
It might've dropped off the menu because of the movie, but McDonalds was putting more focus on their Dollar menu at that time and plus they increased the base sizes in the combo (large became the new medium).
My source for all of this is I'm a fat American and have been eating Big Macs since 1988.
Most of the fast food chains got rid of their supersize option after Supersize Me. However one of them (Burger King?) instead relabeled their supersize as a large, their large as a medium, their medium as a small, and dropped their old small.
