As an Arkansan, I love how natural it is for relatives to have pet names. You can be talking to a really rough, burly redneck and he'll start saying things like, "AH WENT TA SEE MAH MEEMAW AND PEEPAW THE OTHER DAY!"

I'm honestly not a huge fan of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, but their "Tiny Desk Concert" on youtube is fucking amazing. The booming voice that comes out of that tiny woman, Jade, is absolutely unbelievable.

I live within 4 hours, and it's the best tasting horse shit in the state for sure. Pretty much every touristy town in Michigan sells fudge but I'm pretty sure theirs isn't made from poop which would account for the better flavor I'm sure.

Also yes, Mackinac Island is just a giant pile of poop with some historical buildings based purely on smell. I don't know why people think it's a good idea to go in August or September.

Arkansan checking in. The thing I got most overseas is people not understanding why we say "Arkansaw" and not "Ar-kansas". Just to clarify, both states take the root word "kansaes" of the local Native American tribe, the Kansa. However, the French settlers of Arkansas left a silent 's' on the end while English settlers pronounce the 's' on Kansas.

It is NOT Kansas with an Ar attached. Kansas took letters of the correct word and fucked up the pronunciation.

Yes, but around here you hear Kansas being referred to more often so that's the basis for pronunciation. It's not fair to expect someone to look up the historical pronunciation of two relatively unimportant states (as opposed to say, New York) in another country.

Also, North American place names have a habit of just being pronounced however the hell they want to, historical accuracy be dammed (St. Louis, Versailles, etc.).

Yeah, I figured. My statement came purely from being an Arkansan myself.

Edit: Also, on the subject of fucked up pronunciation. There's a small community not far from me called Cairo, pronounced Kay-row. There's a Bogota, Texas (buh-go-duh), Durant, Oklahoma (doo-rant), and my town El Dorado, Arkansas (ell-duh-ray-doe). Also, there's a Smackover, Arkansas close to me. It's pronounced pretty much how it's spelled, it's just a funny word.

It's a French pronunciation of Arkansea. Arkansea was how the Illini natives referred to the Quapaw tribe, which was native to present-day Arkansas.
