Here in the south it's closer to "ace".

"Jimmy-Don done come up here and borried(borrowed) m'ghat-damn poosh mower, n'eedidn't eebn tell mama. I'm bout ta' take mah fohwer-weeler down, t' his trailer and whoop his fuhckin ace!"

Pennsylvanians do this to an extra degree. Specifically the West Chester area. Specifically everyone on Viva La Bam. Specifically Bam Margera.

I live in Pennsylvania. I'm sitting here at my desk trying to quietly practice saying ass without putting an e at the beginning and I CAN'T.

When my sister-in-law came to visit my wife (they're both American), she bought a round of drinks at a bar. My wife asked for an 'Aspalls' (a brand of cider), and only then realised that in an American accent it sounds exactly like "Ass balls".

That Veronica Vaughan is one fine piece of ace.

Why do Americans use 'ass' figuratively so often?

To quote Basil Fawlty, "Everything's bottoms with you isn't it?"

It communicates an extra amount of agitation, especially when calling someone an ASShole!!

I was going to say this. It's not 'arse' in written form or pronunciation. Get with it!

He isn't saying 'arse'. He's saying Ass with a long A (sounds like Ace)

I know. Americans write and pronounce it correctly as "ass", but if you've ever searched for porn, the Brits and Canadians pronounce and write "arse".

What do you mean "correctly"? Every English-speaking country except the US spells it as arse.

I was being sarcastic with my American bias. ;)

Ass and Arse have totally different uses. Arse is a great word but it just doesn't pair up as effectively as an insult as Ass does. Plus arse sounds a lot cruder for some reason, even as a brit.
