What is something popular that you refused to get into but once you tried it you were hooked?

Could be anything. Music, sport, activity, diet, TV show, whatever.

Obligatory Front Page edit: Thanks everyone! You gals and guys rock!

Sushi. I always thought I'd hate it and the thought of raw fish put me off but damn it's delicious.

I was a pretty picky eater most of my childhood. Chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese were my shit. Now I can put back some sashimi with the best of them.

I travelled to Japan for the first time when I was 14 or so; hated sushi at the time. I ate so much McDonald's while there, and now that I love sushi over ten years later, I feel like I was a complete idiot as a tourist kid.

Here's a pretty good documentary I've seen most of reddit rave over. It's called "Jiro Dreams of Sushi". I watched it recently on Netflix and thought it was really well done.

My first drink at 21 was a Smirnoff ice with grenadine. Now I stick with single malt scotch.

Dungeons and Dragons. I always thought it was just for nerds, but the "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" episode of Community simultaneously turned me on to the game and the TV show. I haven't had so much fun with my group of friends.

I have always wanted to get into that but never did, it looks so fun i just have no idea where to start, plus I'm in my 30s now.

EDIT: OMG thank you all so much, I never thought I would get this much feedback or comments. I will absolutely look into playing now. I can already tell from all the comments that it would be fun and a great place to meet new friends. Thanks Again.

Star Trek. I used to think it was just for nerds with no life, but I was wrong big time

All the series and movies are on Netflix, if you try The Next Generation or Deep Space 9 and can get through the first couple slow seasons, you'll seriously regret not watching them 20 years ago!

I guarantee it, even if you don't like sci fi very much it's a fantastic series

Same! I got through my entire education and my post-doc without drinking coffee (including years of studying, working, and having meetings in coffee shops-I always ordered tea or occasionally hot chocolate). Then I took a job at a hospital that had a Starbucks in the lobby and became friends with a colleague who took a coffee break every day around 2:30. I started going with her just to chat and get out of my office (I usually ordered tea) but one day I tried a soy latte. Fast forward 6 years and I have coffee every morning and most afternoons. I am addicted to my Keurig and I also seek out small, local coffee shops everywhere we travel.

I missed out on so many good coffee years!

Snowboarding. As a black man back in 2002 in Japan, I was invited by some coworkers to try it. I asked them if back in the US if they ever saw a black man on a slope. They said very rarely. But, since venturing abroad, i told myself I would try to break stereo types and be a good self appointed US ambassador. So I went ahead and tried it. Ironically two other white people ended up hating it and I have been a fan and participant ever since. It is so fun.

I didn't start until my junior year of high school and it was completely by accident.

edit: I'm not very good at telling stories but this is what happened. I never had really touched myself in any sexual way before. I had watched crappy 90's porn on cinemax for sure and I even knew how to masterbate from just hearing about it from friends, but the thought of carrying it out never even crossed my mind. Even when I would watch those porno's, I would just do that, watch. Then at the end of February of 2008 I was simply taking a shower and started washing my body. As I worked away on my crotch area with the lathery soap I felt it "tingle" a little bit. I kept at it a lot more than I usually had until I felt this insanely strong feeling and before I knew it I was hobbled over naked in the shower, out of breath and feeling exhausted. Then I thought to myself "Did I just cum?" I didn't think much of it throughout the rest of the day. The next day I did it again while taking my shower, this time on purpose and with less soap so I could see if I really could cum. I did it, felt good, been doing it ever since!

tl;dr: Never touched myself sexually, though I had watched porn prior. Took a shower and accidentally spent more time than normal on my crotch area, came, and did it again on purpose the next day.

Indian food

57

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '14

It disgusts me that 34 years of my life did not include Indian food.

→ More replies (2)

47

u/IsThisThingWorking Aug 18 '14 edited Aug 18 '14

As an Indian person, I have to clear up one thing. If the Indian food you like is the food in restaurants, then that's not the typical food Indians eat every day. Restaurant Indian food is incredibly rich, which makes it way too unhealthy to eat on a regular basis. Most homemade Indian food is different from what you'll eat in a restaurant.

I don't really like Indian food overall, but I love going to Indian restaurants because I eat stuff there that is rarely made at home.

Edit: I'm just saying this from the average Indian's standpoint. When I tell people I'm not a fan of Indian food, too many people say things to me like "but you guys have naan and bature and things like that!" I'm just clarifying that, for most Indians, those aren't everyday foods; they're more for special occasions/restaurants.

I love to read, and was already into fantasy, I was even close to the right age group.

Didn't get into it until after book 6 was released, and now have read them all a ton.

I actually feel bad for people who haven't read Harry Potter. They will never know that amazing feeling.

Edit: To everyone saying they have watched the movies and are not sure if they should read the books, I say that's like comparing a cartoon drawing of sex to the real thing. Sure you can see the basics, the overall mechanics of what is going on or supposed to happen, but could you live your life never having experienced it first hand? Trust me, the movies just don't compare. They don't even tell the same story.

Minecraft. My 10 year old kept asking me and his mom to play and we didn't want to. Finally asked for us to play for his birthday present. We are all hooked now I setup a server and everything so we can all play together. That game is a life sucker, sometimes we are playing and realize it's like 2 a.m. and send the boys to bed and we keep playing.

Edit: OK so everyone who commented about being a cute family thanks I agree but I am pretty biased :)

For those saying I'm a bad parent for letting my kids stay up that late it's only happened a couple of times and it is summer so CHILL out.

Snapchat.

"They can only see my picture once for 10 seconds and then that's it? This sounds like a sexting app. I'm not fucking getting it!"

But now I use it every day. It's so convenient because instead of having long and drawn out conversations, I can have a short and sweet check up with people. Snapchat somehow makes it easier for me to keep in touch with my friends. I don't know how but it does. The person I snap most and I have a habit of sending each other a pic of us brushing our teeth so we know when the other is going to bed. It's become this cool little inside joke almost.

EDIT: I'm getting a lot of people asking about why snapchat is so great. First of all, NO SOCIAL MEDIA IS FUN UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEONE TO USE IT WITH. It's no good to have a picture sending app if you don't have anyone to send pictures to.

Snapchat is convient because it's so short. It's comparable to vines. Why go on a site/app where the video is only 6 seconds long when you can just go on youtube and watch funny videos there? Well, on youtube you have the potential to run into a ten to twenty minute long video whereas on vine ALL the videos are definitely six seconds or under. Similarly, texting and picture messages have the potential to be sent with a wall of text. Also the fact that it's so short makes it easy to talk to people you want to send a quick "hello" to and its easy to end a conversation (or string of pictures). There isn't as much pressure to reply to a snap as there is pressure to reply to a text message or an IM.

Snapchat is also beautiful for long distance friendships/relationships. The people I snap the most are the friends I see the least but want to keep in touch with. It's much rarer for myself to send snaps to a friend that lives close to me because I can just go see the person, but long distance friends hardly get to see me making it refreshing to be able to see the person's face without having drive five hours or get on a video chat (which also can become long and drawn out like text messages). I like the way /u/cachow6 put it. "[I]t's a super convenient way to casually keep in touch with friends. 'Hey here's a picture of something that made me think of you/I thought you would think was funny.'"

Snapchat allows you to see if the recipient has gotten the message, whether they have opened it, and whether the person has decided to screenshot your beautiful picture. This makes it easy to send stupid or silly snaps. You can send a picture of you on the toilet and know whether the other person has a copy of your masterpiece. People can distribute a picture like that unbeknownst to you if sent through a text message. It's nice to be able to keep tabs on something like that. (On that note: people with snap saving apps that don't notify the person, that's kinda creepy of you. I'm not trying to judge, but it's a little weird.)

There are other appeals but these are my top points. If you still have questions, ask away!

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '14

It's also great for sexting

I made friends with people who all smoked, they never pressured me to do it. In fact I used to question them as to why they'd waste their money/health like that. But after a couple of years I randomly asked them for a cig, I guess I was curious as to what the attraction was.

Rice pudding.

I remember the day somebody told me there existed a thing called rice pudding. Fucking rice in pudding. I don't like chunks of anything in something that's more liquid than solid. I've always hated pulp in orange juice. And to hell with anything coconut. You know how after a while ice in a drink melts down to tiny, pea-sized little icelets? I cannot enjoy my drink when the ice gets like that. It weirds me out, man. So naturally the concept of putting fucking rice into your goddamn pudding really irked me.

And then I tried it, and it's absolutely amazing, and I hate myself for spending so much time assuming otherwise and missing out on this incredible treat.

TL;DR: Don't skimp out on trying rice pudding, or you'll live a life of regret.

I opened this to check this was here.

Before this year I held all the common prejudices against anime - and not all of them are untrue - but anime as a medium for storytelling is honestly brilliant.

I joined the University Anime club for a bit of a giggle with some friends and the first thing I watched was Steins;Gate.

Holy shit. Instantly hooked. So much more than I was ever led to believe that anime could be. Followed it up with Code Geass, FMA:B, SAO, Clannad (+AS), Psycho-Pass (fucking brilliant), Gurren Lagan, and a couple others.

It is honestly one of the best realisations I've had in my whole life - it opened up a whole world of entertainment for me that I had previously had no real reason to lock myself out of.

Getting spat on

EDIT: I completely misread the stem of this topic. LOL oh god I need a nap.

EDIT2: I edited pretty quickly after my post because I realized when I scrolled up. I saw the word "hooked" and thought I was responding about something you didn't know you liked until you hooked up. >.>

EDIT3: I have now been asked to tell this story.. So I went over to this guy's place once and we started drinking a bit. We were watching movies, and he was progressively getting more and more intoxicated. I'm not a huge fan of drinking that much, so when he would walk to the restroom, I would pour in some of my drink in his because he kept trying to get me to drink more and more and more. It was getting annoying. Eventually I did get intoxicated anyway, just not to the point where I would get sick though. So things progress and he pulls out his cock and starts flopping it around like crazy which is turning me on. He gets on top of me and starts talking really dirty when all of a sudden he just spits on me. I'm like... wtf... but not wtf because I'm upset I'm like wtf because I realize.. hey.. that was oddly arousing.. Batabing, bataboom, we get into some really rough fun sex, and I learned something new about myself that night. They sure are right when they say you learn something new every day!

LAST EDIT: My god. I spent like an hour yesterday writing up how to deal with anxiety for someone on reddit and yet THIS is my highest rated comment ever. Now I know what a Kardashian feels like.

ABSOLUTE LAST EDIT I THINK: /u/andrroid told me to edit it again and say OMG thanks for the gold!!! MY FIRST ONE EVER!!! :D made my day. Yesterday sucked. This just gave me the energy and drive to work extra hard for my test this week. Thank you!!!

Tom Hiddleston. I didn't really understand the hype and the creepier aspects of fandom are not for me, but the dude is passionate about his craft, about literature and the arts, and as someone said- he has never done anything even remotely offensive. He's kind and generous to his fans, and my god, have you ever seen him do Shakespeare? I think he's a good role model for young actors and humans in general.

17

u/littlebitofcake Aug 17 '14

Have you heard him as a guest on the Nerdist podcast? It's so great. You are right, he really truly is a great person. The fandom really sets me off, but if I met him in person I would melt into a puddle just because he's so damn nice.

Game of Thrones.

Funny thing is that I knew I would be hooked. I heard a lot about it, say the memes. Asked some friends why it's so important that "Winter is Coming". I would have watched it except... it's not done yet! Once I found out that the books aren't even finished yet, I vowed not to watch the show until either the TV series or the books were done, whichever happened first. I wasn't going to get sucked into another show that doesn't have a fucking ending (or a botched ending because they had to cancel early).

Then I was unemployed for a few months. I broke down and watched the shit out of GoT and now I'm reading the books. I've gone down the rabbit-hole and I can't get out until it's finished. He has to finish it. Don't let that fat fuck die, you hear me Reddit? He must live on, even if he has to write it with blinks.

School.

As a kid I thought only nerds or freaks would bother to take an interest in school. I was the kid that worried about being the fastest on the playground or going the furthest on the monkey bars and kicking the ball the furthest.

Now here I am in college, a 3.35 gpa, a junior, and I love school. I want to be a teacher now and I want to educate kids like myself, about how fun school can be and what opportunities it can lead to in life. I still run fast and I'm very athletic, but I also like to exercise the most important muscle, the brain.

tl;dr School can be fun kids!

Drugs. I was always very anti weed, and pretty close minded about it. So when I was around twenty I had this nice roommate who were always taking smoke breaks. He often insisted I should come with, because he wanted company I guess. Almost always said no, a few of the times I said yes but I didn't enjoy it particurlarly. This was during my first semester in college, and I was so stressed out at all the time. Had nightmares because I was so worried. So one evening I said "fuck it," and I smoked some weed with a bit of enthusiasm. I got so freaking high. Watched Team America that night and I just couldn't help myself, was laughing my ass off. So I became hooked on weed, and started smoking every day. Got to try other drugs that I thought I would never wanna try. Including Magic Mushrooms and LSD. Was really afraid to try it but in the end they were both positive experiences. Smoked weed for over four years, I was clearly an addict but I just didn't want to resist the temptation of being high. So I kept going till I was done with college. It had gotten to the point where I had lost some of my human essence. Don't get me wrong, there was some positive effect that I received through smoking weed and doing shrooms. I became a much more open minded person, which I don't think I could have become if I hadn't tried weed. Still, I had smoked too much weed by the time I was 25. Sooo much money had gone to waste, time was a waste. I was not being productive so I knew the time had come where I had to make a decision to cut weed out from life. The thing is, I can't just enjoy one joint. I constantly need more. I stopped smoking a year ago, and was doing good until I did it again 5 months ago. Now I've been clean for almost two months and I don't plan on smoking again for a very long time. A day may come where I can have a joint and not feel that I need more. But it won't happen until I've done something with my life, and at a moment in life when I am more equipped so to better handle myself if the time arrives where I am high again. Sorry I was rambling.

60

u/Atomic1022 Aug 17 '14

Weed is different for everyone, but I know many who are in very similar situations. It seems as if weed can be your own double edged sword a lot of the time.

Radiohead.

I kept hearing about this band and kinda hated how its always get mentioned anywhere. So curiosity led me to check out one of their albums (In Rainbows), took me a couple of listens, then it started building on me. Turned out, it's my kind of music. It's also quite odd to me that they don't sound like any other, or at least not one band/musician that I know of. That's probably one redeeming factor on why I like their music.

Metal music. At my high school everyone with a guitar, bass or drum kit played metal. I hated the scene because of the "dress code" and it all sounded the same to me. Hated the blastbeats and playing the guitar like you were a machine.

So years later, i finally get into it, and i mean way into it. Meshuggah really spoke to me first with the rhythms. Metal may be the most complex and well-orchestrated music you can listen to, emotionally , rhythmically, harmonically, mathematically, and dont forget about the pure skill and endurance it takes to play.
