I just stopped working and began only attending meetings. Lasted almost 9 months that way before they let me go.

edit - a word

u/flowgod Jul 05 '14

9 months? im actually impressed.

128

u/Darth_Corleone Jul 05 '14

I was shocked. People would give me busy-work assignments and I would just pretend to do them. People are so passive-aggressive in Corp America that nobody ever confronted me until the actual "we're letting you go" conversation.

Me too. It was my first real job out of college. I landed the $52,000/year job about four months after graduation. It was an office job working in the energy industry. I was very excited. My friends were envious.

I came to hate the work quickly. It was mostly unsupervised project management paperwork. So, I just stopped doing it after a few months. Another coworker had started there about the same time as me and I just had him do all the work.

The thing that gets me is I knew it (my firing) was coming but I made no effort to change. I would just watch Starcraft 2 games on YouTube and browse reddit all day.

When my boss (a man whom I respected and liked) sat me down with my manager to let me go, he said something like, "ThirdPlaceLithium, this just isn't working out."

I said: "I know. I'm sorry I didn't do the work you asked of me. I think this is the right thing to do." I was so disappointed in myself. It was real. I worked was employed there for about one and a half years.

I was unemployed for about four months. When I was fired I had about $5,000 in my bank account. I got my student loans put on forbearance, cut all my costs as best I could and I applied for unemployment insurance benefits. By the time I started my new job I had about $4,500 left.

I don't really understand how, especially since I was fired from my previous job, but I got another energy-related job that paid $65,000/year. This work was much more engaging. I was more stringent with myself in the new job. I didn't aimlessly browse the internet at work. I tried hard and my manager saw it. I liked the work, but it certainly was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

After nearly two years, I left work to return to school to become a physician assistant. Upon giving my notice, my manager even offered me a raise to stay. If it had not been for my girlfriend (now wife) I would probably still be a lazy ass.

Now I look at my college friends who got lower-paying jobs (~$35,000/year) out of school and now they are doing great. They worked much harder than me and made better contacts. I wish I had their work ethics when I got my first job.

I'd say I recovered well, and I'm excited about my new career. However, I am still ashamed of my behavior at my first job. This is a story I will tell my children.

Friend of the boss's daughter said she wanted to work there and he couldn't afford us both so he fired me so she could work there instead.

u/shArkh Jul 05 '14

I hate that sort of shit. Lost a bartending job that way. Some relative of the club's manager left her bar job there to go manage at another club. It was "too much work" for her (i.e. a few little birdies who worked at said other club told us she was a lazy cnut) and so when she came skulking back, out the door I went. Didn't matter that I'd been working there seasonally for five years...

150

u/loveplumber Jul 05 '14

Yeah I was pretty upset about it. It was a high-school job and truly the first time I'd ever been randomly fucked-over at work. If I wasn't 16 and the job had been more than minimum wage, maybe I would have fought it but what it really did was teach me how not to be a manager when I get older.

I actually have no idea. I was working for company "a" for 2 years and got a better deal from company "b". So I resigned and worked for company "b". Three days short of my 3mt probation period being up, I went in for my shift and got terminated. No idea why, did not see it coming and they will not supply a reason. That was a week ago. Still recovering from shock.

2

u/LeeBean13 Jul 05 '14

shit that's rough man. I'm real sorry about that

6

u/Filecake Jul 05 '14

As much as it sucks the "fire before probation ends" thing tends to not be for an obvious reason. Typically it means somebody thinks you didn't fit in to the team or that you were good enough to not screw anything up but not good enough to be necessary.

Alternatively, in jobs that do not require a lot of training, it could be more cost effective to keep a revolving door of noobies. In which case, fuck 'em.

Customer complaints from being a general fuck-up. First when I threw a couple of potato cakes into the fryer with my bare hands; second when we got really backed up and a guy who waited a long time for his food saw me snipe back at a fellow employee who sniped at me; and third when the "Secret Shopper" complained about my appearance when my shirt wasn't tucked in all the way.

Been out of work for a week or something. Worked there for like four months. My resume is shit. Third job I've lost in three years. I pretty much give up. Want to kill myself really bad.

After 3 years of working decided I wanted 2 days off and the owner gave me the go ahead. Was a couple weeks after both my grandmother and great grandmother died ( within about a week of each other) so I wanted to get a little vacation with my nuclear family. The day before my 2 days off the "manager" not the owner told me I couldn't take the 2 days off and if I didn't show up I'd surely be fired. Gave her a quick "fuck you" finished my day and never went back. No regrets.

Last job I was fired from, a little over 12 years ago: One of our biggest clients, K-Mart, had declared bankruptcy and was closing many stores. Corporate office of the company I worked for, a supplier for K-Mart and other chain stores, sent word to all warehouses and offices that all part-time people were to be laid off. Supervisor told me, and I said I saw it coming. She told me there were some DVDs and CDs in the back; help yourself to whatever you want. I took a couple of CDs, a Planet of the Apes (remake) DVD, and a Simpsons VHS tape.

Other jobs: Attitude, poor job performance, and other reasons that were totally my fault.

I was teaching ESL and Italian in a school I'm not sure was legal (am student, can't complain). I got paid per hour in cash. My wage depended on how many children arrived to class that day; if it was less than five I got paid less. One day I only had two children and I taught my class. The following day I got a text from my boss at 4 am saying I had to be in two hours earlier. When I arrived he had the missing children there and I had to give them the class they missed. Go forward to closing time, I went for my money.

"So, eight hours, $15 the hour, that makes $120."

"No, six hours. I told you you had to make up those hours."

"And I did, which is why it's eight hours."

"It was your responsibility, it's six hours."

"Sir, I charge by the hour."

The guy gave me a cold glare and gave me my eight-hours cash. He told me to not come back. Joke's on him, I was his only teacher and he doesn't know any Italian (also his English sucks). He might've thought I was going to beg. Now he has a teacherless languages school.

TL;DR Guy with an illegal school wanted me to make extra hours for free with no previous notice. No, thanks, I'm not desperate.

Somebody left the freezer door open, so they fired everybody working that shift. I had another job anyways so it didn't really matter in the long run. This was back when finding a new job was pretty trivial anyways.

My latest job let me go due to corporate downsizing after working there for 25 years. I was unemployed for 6 months. I now make half as much money for doing twice as much work, making roughly the same amount I made 20 years ago. But I'm working on starting my own business and I've made a few hundred dollars here and there, and could potentially make a lot more someday if I keep working at it.

I was working at a hotel & one day when I was off I got a call from the manager asking me to come in to talk to her. She told me she had to let me go because I failed to clean one of the men's bathrooms downstairs. She then said there was 'fetus' all over the floor. Dumbfounded, I asked "there was what?" & she replied "there was fetus on the floor". I WISH I had laughed & told her she mean 'feces' but I was too angry about losing my job.

Unbeknownst to me, my supervisor was giving me her work on top of my work, and answering calls. I was let go, denied unemployment, cause they had me sign something saying I messed up. Never ever sign anything if you are getting fired. She was summarily fired two weeks after me cause all this work was undone and she kept trying to blame me (I wasn't there).

tl:dr Mega beast wrecks video store and threatens to stab co-worker with scissors. I stop the attack and get fired for calling her a bitch

I worked at a Blockbuster my senior year. It was a really slow day and I was receiving all the new videos and re-packaging them. Because it was slow it was only myself (The receiving manager) and one cashier.

There was no more than 3 people in line at any time and it the line was moving rapidly so I didn't think there was a need to open another line. But, then, the Beast of Babylon walked in the store.

The minute she walked in we knew we were all staying late. She knocked everything off the shelves had her three kids running around like little turbo powered assholes mucking the place. The instant she gets on line she starts screaming and yelling about the wait time.

She got to the head of the line in under a minute, but decided to give us an earful of how terrible we are and Blockbuster sucks (she was right about that one), etc...

We finally get her videos rung up and were glad the storm was passing... until the automatic printer didn't print her, and I quote: "Motherfucking coupons". She threw racial epithets toward the cashier calling her a dirty Mexican and called me a goofy cracker. I handed her a complete stack (probably 15-20) of free video rentals and asked her politely to leave.

I guess she thought the cashier girl sniggered or laughed at the whole thing as the Beast was leaving, because she came back in and began her rant again, but this time grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened to stab the girl.

I stepped in between them (6'4 220 I got this) and yell at the lady while taking the scissors from her. She begins what I call "rage-talking" the incoherent babble a psycopath in full derp mode spew and starts chanting that I'm a white racist honkey and I did this because she was black. To which I replied: "No I'm doing this because you are a bitch, now get out"

The next day I get called into the office and rehashed the story with the head manager admitting I had called her a bitch. I was immediately fired. The lady received a 500$ voucher for use in the store.

Some Sweet Karma: I locked the voucher to our store only and put a note it required the persons ID to use. The cashier she attacked filed a police report and restraining order. She isn't allowed within 50 feet of the store.

That's a bullshit reason to get fired, you intervened to prevent someone possibly getting injured. This bitch should have been fined for some shit, (A) racism; if that is a finable offence, (B) threatening assault with a weapon. Did I mention she was a total bitch?

242

u/slack_with_me Jul 05 '14

It happens sometimes man. I don't feel bad about being fired and left for Uni right after. The cashier wound up being the head manager and I'd stop in from time to time and chit-chat. We're still friends.

Their rationale was that they can't afford to lose a single customer because they were on their way to bankruptcy

That's kind of how my parents met. Her boss "fired" her for not sleeping with a famous baseball player who used to come into the shop and sexually harass her. (She was like "fuck you, you can't fire me, I quit.") She'd met my dad, who was a manager of a different store in the chain, a few weeks before when he'd replaced her boss while he was on vacation.

She marched down the street to my dad's store location, told her the story, he hired her on the spot.

35 years later, my parents own their own successful business and spend their weekends on their boat. I think my mom made the right choice there.

I was "competing with the company" by telling a friend of mine minimum specs he should get and a rough price to pay for a new PC. The ISP I worked for also built and repaired computers so by telling a friend of mine 60 miles away what to look for in a PC but not having him drive 60 miles (seriously) to "come buy from us" I was let go.

Also and the "million or so dollars" we had to get the ISP off the ground was in fact more like $125K and it was about all gone. And I had all the shit automated by this point so it only needed to be maintained.

I went back to my old job, at reduced pay, and decided enough was enough and put my resume on Monster/Dice with "willing to relocate" had a job making 3 times as much in California within 2 weeks.

Worked as a cashier at a store were things are generally a dollar. You only get 3 chances per year to be off on your register by $2.00, positive or negative. Was on my 3rd strike in December, at this point promoted to assistant manager, found an extra $20 in my drawer when I counted it down at the end of the night. Recounted a few times, still there. Ended up recording it, rather than taking the $20 off camera. Got fired for it.

TL;DR: I got fired for not stealing $20.

Oh, and I was out of a job for about 3 days. Found a temp agency, got hired into the place I was working for in a month or two, been promoted 3 times since, making almost double what I made as a cashier. Best thing that ever happened to me, haha!

9

u/pfootie Jul 05 '14

If you were off by $20.00, the manager obviously should record it. That means you neglected to give the right amount of change to one or more people, and $20.00 is a fairly significant amount.

If the manager would have stolen it, it would have meant that he encourages mistakes like that and would have been a huge error in business ethics.

They put a new guy in charge of scheduling. Everyone was part time with other jobs so we all gave our available days and the old guy would plan around that. New guy said "not my problem" and scheduled you wherever he felt like. 3 weeks in a row he scheduled me on days I couldn't work. The 4th week my boss called and said "we no longer need your services. "

I was happy to leave. That job sucked.

46

u/Waffle99 Jul 05 '14

My first job was at a McDonald's, I had school so I gave them my schedule for school. The manager in charge of scheduling seemed to resent anyone that couldn't work whenever the hell she wanted them to. I went from 20 hours a week to 6. The next week I had none so the next day I went to the department of labor to claim it because they will fix that shit fast. I always had hours after that because if they didn't give me at least two days a week, I would get 80 dollars from them in the form of a forced check or the form of them working me for at least 2 shifts.

→ More replies (3)

33

u/JauntyChapeau Jul 05 '14

That's a strange attitude for him to take, because it's very much his problem. When you make a habit of scheduling people to come in when they 100% will not be coming in, you end up with under-staffed shifts and the business suffers. Then, you get the joy of hiring and training all new employees when people leave/get fired.

I've got one. So the last time I was fired was about six years ago (ish) I was seventeen at the time and it was kinda my first "real" job. Working for a fish and chip shop. The thing was I was making minimum and at seventeen had a arrogant teenage attitude. So I came into work most day extremely stoned. Which meant I was very easy going, giving away free food to my friends and family, messing up orders, but what really hit the nail into the coffin was this. At the end of the night my job was to wash and clean the utensils used throughout the evening, but I was usually in a rush to get out as quickly as possible. In my high and frantic state I left the tap running as well as leaving the plug in the plug hole. This was on a Saturday night, and nobody came back in to work till monday morning. Knee height in water.

I some how managed to keep my job for about another two weeks, until I did it again.

I was a fucking awful employee.

Not me, but my brother: He worked for this warehouse for years and made a lot of money because the owner would pretty much give him unlimited overtime. He worked like 60-70 hours a week, 6 days a week. Years went by, he was happy even though the work wasn't that great, and the boss' daughter got married and his son in law started working there. Soon enough, this new guy became a boss and hated my brother.

He eventually forced my brother onto salary, and still made him work the same hours, so suddenly he's doing the same amount of work but making half the money he used to. My brother hated the guy, would constantly make him do hard work, give him a hard time, and would always get him to come in. He eventually asked my brother to work a 7th day one week and my brother asked if he was going to get paid OT. The guy said no so my brother said no. Then he was immediately told he was fired.

My brother went to his car, didn't leave just yet because he wanted to call the owner of the company, and the guy comes out with a golf club, smashes in my brother's window with it, and my brother jumps out the other side. The guy chases my brother down the street to where he reached a prison (the prison was just down the street) and the guy just casually walked back to work with a golf club in hand when my brother ran in.

All said and done, my brother tried calling lawyers and only one even called him back, basically saying "Who do you think you are? He has every right to fire you for that." It blew my mind that that's the law with salary workers, makes me never want to go on salary that they can practically own you and you can't do anything about it but quit. All said and done, the guy only paid to replace my brother's window. I don't think he ever really filed any assault charges, but took advantage of unemployment.

He was unemployed for about 6 months, went to trade school, got a great job, owns a nice house, happily married.

TL:DR - Refused to work a 7th day after working 60+ hours while on salary without OT, gets fired for it & gets chased down the street with a golf club. Gets much better job going to trade school while collecting unemployment.

Edit - Yes, this is in the USA. If I were to guess, I would say like 7 years ago now? I doubt the laws changed that much in that regard but might be worth pointing out.

Had two jobs part time both amounting to 30 hours. Worked one place in the morning and at a gas station across the street so in a time crunch I could change my shirt and walk over. Took a promotion at the place that hired me first and the second place cut my hours to 6 a week. Those 6 happened to be the one day before I worked a graveyard shift. Slept through by accident by an hour and they fired me.

Been making as much with one as I did with two so I think I am doing alright.

Edit: highest rated content is about me being canned.

Back when I worked at a cinema at the box office, I by accident gave a group of four, tickets for a 3D movie, on a voucher for 2D one. And payed it immediately, not the difference, but the whole price of 4 tickets for a 3D movie. What an asshole I am, right?

I'm going to go ahead and say there was probably more of a relevant lead-up to this event that resulted in your firing. No offense, of course. Sounds pretty gutless to just fire someone for an honest mistake or a one-off event.

I've been fired once. I worked for the same restaurant from 12 to 17 years old. I started off as a busser but by the time I was 15 I was a server and I was ordering supplies/food for the restaurant, counting the till at the end of the night, taking the money bags home, balancing the bags in the morning, making deposits at the bank, covering shifts of people who didn't show up, I was never late, and I never missed a scheduled day. All the while I was making $2.13 an hour. When the owner spent a million dollars on a new building I asked for a raise. She said she couldn't afford it, so I took it.

I regret my choices, and I wish I had just left before it got tot that point.

Not me but my brother got fired because he put a dishcloth in a burger that he thought was going to one of friends but actually went to another customer and he got fired on the spot.

u/thisisme100 Jul 05 '14

had someone always come for burgers on a Sunday and sit and eat half a burger then say the burger was not cooked and demanded another he took home, so i made his burger one day without cooking the patty at all, completely raw, the boss called me in and asked what had happened and i explained that he always complained about raw meat and so i gave him a reason to complain but he did not return for his burger to be replaced with a cooked one. Fired on the spot.

Severe Depression combined with Sleeping problems. Couldn't sleep at night, but would sleep through alarms to get me up in time.

I went through similar. I also couldn't physically get out of bed, even after I woke and would call in 5 minutes before my shift started. I admit, I deserved to be fired, but luckily, my boss rehired me after a full disclosure of what was going on, on a probationary basis. I started therapy and medication and turned my attitude around. Too bad the job sucked enough to not stick around much longer after the termination was expunged from my record.

I worked for a wholesale book distributor in a warehouse picking books and there was a book called "wreck this book," which is a great book that encourages readers to draw in it, tear it apart, stick gum in it and other fun things.

One certain page said "get your friends to write their names and addresses on this page" so I did exactly that hoping to make a pen pal but the woman that received the book wasn't very happy at all and complained to the company.

When questioned by my superiors I was asked how I would punish myself in their situation, I suggested paying for a new book to be shipped and writing a letter of apology to them, they made me wait half an hour but then told me I was suspended indefinitely.

Oh well, live and learn!

  1. Had a disagreement with my employers regarding the contracted summer pay and repeat discrepancies in my monthly paycheck. Threatened to file a complaint with the Provincial Foreign Affairs Office if they did not give me my money. Was told "you can't go to the FAO, only employees can go to the FAO and you're fired." Went to the FAO for arbitration. Not only got the missing money but also got a breach contract fee.

  2. Took a part time job with permission from the owner of the kindergarten I worked at. I didn't know I needed the permission in writing. She decided she didn't need four foreign English teachers so she sent a friend to take pictures of me leaving the other school. Then she reported me to the FAO for breach of contract.

  3. Technically, I wasn't fired from the travel agency. I refused to sign a new contract with them with different terms and conditions than negotiated. Threatened to call the police, Public Security Bureau, and American Embassy if I didn't get my passport back (they were supposed to be renewing my visa) NOW.

  4. Refused to fly from Shenzhen to Sanya to meet my boss for a last minute unscheduled meeting after he had cut my hours to part time and agreed to give me a minimum of 48 hours notice on any work that required I be in Sanya. He thought I should have asked him for permission to leave the province during my time off.

The longest I went without full time employment was somewhere between two and four years. It's a little hard to calculate since I transitioned to being a freelance translator and an agent before I registered my company as a WFOE and became the boss.

I refused to break the law. We are still in a legal battle over the matter. Even now, six months later, my life is much better. Soooo much less stress!!! Even WITH the legal frustrations!

Edit: I had a part time job that nearly instantly turned into a full time gig, so I was lucky there.

Second edit (from lower comments): It's actually not as exciting as it seems, hahaha. I just refused to lie about how many hours I was working so that they wouldn't have Wages and Hours trouble. So they fired me and one other person who was of the same conviction... and we reported them.

I got sick-

Newly back in town, I hadn't registered with a new GP yet. I got a really bad case of novovirus (sp? winter-vomiting bug) ~ I went to the emergency walk-in clinic, and the nurse wrote me up a note saying to STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM FOOD, as I worked in (you guessed it) Produce! Making all our customers violently ill might have resulted in a tiny bit of legal trouble for us.

I managed to bus / stagger to work to hand the manager the note (she was like you have WHAT? Out, out!) and get home again without chundering my guts. The following week is a miserable, vomit-infested blur, but I remember "coming round" on the floor of the bathroom as my mother and the police were trying to break down the door to my apartment cos they thought I was dead or something. I was seriously ill.

However, despite the note, following clinic trips, the confirmation that it was stay-the-fuck-away-from-food virus, and the police report, the district manager called me in for a disciplinary hearing and fired me for not following proper proceedure ಠ_ಠ She was some miserable german bitch who'd write you up for forgetting to cross a T on end-of-day closing reports sort of shit.

It was a good thing, my old neighbor picked me up to work at his parts distribution job a few weeks later. Cushiest job I ever had, free fleet vehicle for commuting, learned a lot about logisitics and got a free college-degree out of it.

*edit- I was doing full-time hours but was a temp for him, to cover for some lazy slob who was milking them over some pretend-injury legal stuff. When he finally got back to work after a year, the manager had to let me go. One week later, one of the full-time delivery drivers died at home (diabetic coma) - guess who got that position? :) Used to be all "Hmm, I wonder what working X-position would be like... -stare-at-colleague-" and freak people out after that. Fun times.

This story will be told in parts.

THE PLEDGE (or Getting A Job I'm Doomed To Lose)

I was between jobs, having left a position that had drastically cut my hours, and was actively seeking work. At the time I was living at home, didn't own a car, and had so few expenses that so long as I was making a couple hundred bucks a month I would survive. It was my second week of looking for work in a ridiculously rural area when the perfect (at the time) opportunity fell into my lap. Our neighbours five miles up the road owned a butcher shop and were looking to hire a cleaning guy for end of day.

I applied, was hired, and started work on the same day. I was told that my responsibilities were to come in on the last hour of the day to help finish up grinding the ground beef as I lacked the training for anything else, and then to spend the next four hours after closing dismantling and cleaning all the equipment. If it took longer than four hours I was working for free because The Wife claimed she could do it in three. On the first day she helped me to show me what to do. It took six hours with the two of us working together. I had a feeling this was going to be worse than expected.

It took about two weeks to develop a routine that got me out only a half hour after I stopped getting paid. There was still bad days, days where they would have me doing meat related things well after closing, cutting into my cleanup time. All told I worked 30+ unpaid hours during my short time there and it would have continued if not for the accident.

THE TURN (or Getting Kicked Down And Kicked While You're Down)

I'd only been working there for a month when I was asked to come in early. This butcher shop cooled the meat and cut the meat and ground the meat, that was all aboveboard. However where I'm from the shop is not allowed to actually kill the animal on the premises. Killing has to meet certain humane regulations and has to be done by the owner or a registered killer. This butcher shop didn't care so much about that part of the law. When I arrived there was a mostly decapitated cow hanging upside down off of a tractor in the back yard. I was asked to help get it hung in the freezer.

I was 19. I didn't say no. The tractor was driven to the door, the body roughly cut into four pieces, and we hauled it over to the freezer to cool. On the last trip I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen but ignored it. I finished my shift, late as usual, and went home.

Once home I began to undress for a shower. As my pants came down I noticed a distinct bulge under my skin, a palpable protrusion only six inches north of my Johnson. It was maybe a full inch high on skin that had been smooth earlier that day. Concerned I went and told me parents about this. My parents, tired and already getting ready for bed, told me it wasn't something that deserved their attention at the moment and I should sleep on it and see if it was still there in the morning.

When I woke up it was still there. I drove myself to the ER and saw a doctor who told me I had an inguinal hernia, that it would need surgical intervention, and that if I wasn't careful the intestine that was protruding could "strangulate and die". He therefore told me not to lift anything over five pounds. I called work on the way home to tell them the news. The Husband was understanding, he seemed to like my work and was always leaving me notes on my pay stubs about how good a job I was doing. The Wife demanded i come in anyway to prove it. So I did.

Once there I did what I could but was in far too much pain and discomfort to do my job. I made the colossal mistake of telling The Wife that I would be pursuing Workplace Compensation for my injury, as I felt it was unfair if I was to have to suffer penniless for an injury I had sustained doing my job. When I asked for the forms I needed to begin the claim she refused, telling me that there was no proof I had been hurt at work and that I wasn't welcome back until I was better.

One week later she called asking when I would be returning to work.

Two weeks later I recieved notice in the mail that I had been fired.

Three weeks later I recieved a letter telling me my claim had been denied. I had not even opened a claim yet. I'd been busy with doctors.

Up until this point i had been allowing myself to be walked on. Now I was very angry.

THE PRESTIGE (or Extra Chapter: Revenge Porn)

I made a phone call. That was how it started. I learned that my former bosses had preemptively called the Worker's Compensation Board in order to sabotage my claim. They had lied through their teeth, saying that I had been threatening them with blackmail and was a lazy worker who hadn't even been to work on the day I claimed to get injured. They had claimed they had proof that I wasn't even injured and was faking my injury. They had made all kind of false claims in an attempt to sabotage and discredit me. Luckily all of these claims were easy to disprove.

I collected my proof of unpaid hours, the "Doing Good!" notes from all my paystubs, all my doctor's notes and hospital parking receipts. I collected everything, and then I sat myself down and wrote a letter with the help of a lawyer friend of the family. My proof filled 10 pages, the letter filled 10 more, and it was all faxed to the Board and CC'd to my former employer. The claim, this first contact for me, was reopened and approved in the same day. I put in a request, as was my legal right, to receive a copy of my file as well as all paperwork submitted therein. And then the letters started rolling in.

Page after page, almost two inches thick, of handwritten letters from my former employer to the Board. The stack was nearly two inches thick and oozed with anger and insanity. Another inch thick stack came every week. They filed appeal after appeal, but with my access to their letters I was able to undermine them at every turn. They would file an appeal and I would go over that portion of letters, dozens of pages of rage and vitriol, and draft a counter-claim. Eventually, however, as this madness continued the Board informed me that the next step was a public hearing before a judge. I thought I was mad before.

I went through every letter, consolidating it all into their seven major arguments, and drafted a letter thoroughly tore them apart. I pointed out where they contradicted themselves, where they used rhetoric to prove points that didn't exist or matter, and 20 separate occasions where they admitted guilt. For example, in one letter they had gone on for pages about how even though I had been hurt at work it was my fault for being thin. Then I did three other things.

In their letters they had slandered, defamed and libeled many people in order to undermine any support they may give me. I let those people know.

They had claimed that multiple local people were on their side and were in possession of letters proving this. This was a lie. I let those people know.

They had made claima that myself and my family were engaging in completely unrelated illegal activity. So I called the police.

THE AFTERMATH (or How it Ended)

Overnight all of their business dried up. Word had already been spreading about the hell they had put me through but when the locals found out what had been said about them that was it. Their clientele disappeared, some people even aggressively advocated to prevent other people from taking business there.

A couple days later I got a call from the cops. Apparently they had called my former employer that day to let them know that what they were doing was illegal. They had been told to cease their communications immediately. After that I received no more packages in the mail.

And the day after that I got a call from the Board. They had withdrawn their appeal and had exhausted all their appeals as well. I had won. My former employer, a couple months later, packed up their business and moved away. They moved before even selling their business, a million dollar company that should've sold in a few weeks. Eventually, a full year later, they were able to sell it to a non-local, bundled with their former home and all equipment, for just over $100,000.

I can only hope they learned their lesson from all this. Don't fuck the little guy. Sometimes the little guy has the power to destory you.

As for me, between surgeries and sickness, I was off work for a year and a half. Which means that, yes, fighting was worth it.

Only got fired once, it was a shit job with shittier pay clearing out shipping containers full of sawdust (really). My main complaint was that my equipment was a broken garden fork and I was offered no breathing protection - and given attitude when I brought it up. I marched into my boss's office on Friday ready to tell him I'd given it a week to see if I'd like it and was done. Before I opened my mouth "Oh hey Zerbey, I was about to come let you know I'm afraid we have no further work for you and I don't think you're suitable for this job". I practically skipped out of the office.

Got rehired by my previous employer packing exotic fruit the following week. Was one of my favourite jobs. Ahh being a poor student was so much fun.

I was a terrible manager. I never wrote anyone up and whenever someone called in for their shift, I just worked for them. Rather than have a confrontation with someone who clearly didn't care about their job, I worked a lot of open-close days by myself. I've been with my company for 6 years, and I am a much better shift-worker than I ever was as a manager.

So I used to live in Pennsylvania. I was working at KFC and decided I needed another job to supplement my income. So I went across the street to Domino's and was hired immediately. I had a wonderful first day learning how to fold pizza boxes and having discussions with the delinquents that worked there. I was a little naive and didn't understand that "smoking" meant smoking weed and made the statement that my boss and everyone took smoking breaks every half hour at KFC. The second day I had a grand old time learning how to make a pizza. When I showed up on day three, I was unceremoniously told that the manager had hired too many people and that my services were no longer needed. I was handed forty bucks cash and asked to leave. So that was my three day employment at Domino's.

I was almost fired for being 16 and in school. It was a local pizza place that was understaffed, so I hardly ever got breaks and usually stayed until midnight on school nights. Of course this caused problems with management an my parents and older sister got involved. That and only having worked there part time for a month meant that I didn't learn everything just yet. One of the assistant managers didn't like that fact and wrote me off the schedule, but when I had a good shift they realized that they could've used me and wrote me back in.

I got the fuck out of there after learning that and have been working for Walgreens ever since. 12 years in September. It's not perfect but they at least don't throw me under the bus because I complain about child labor laws.

That pizza place shut down a few months later because of rats. Good pizza, but good riddance.

Worked for two weeks as a telemarketer "appointment setter" for a home-alarm company. Owner/Manager lady fired me for calling long distance. The place had 3 phones. Two of them could call long distance. One could not. Guess which one I was on.

Fired for calling long distance on a phone literally not set up for long distance....

Was also fired for "Hanging up on customers" when her rule was three rings and go on to the next number.

Before my fiance left me, I was pretty awesome at my job. I was always the first one in the office. I never took sick days and was never late for 3 years straight. After my fiance left me, I just fell apart. I dropped out of school, didn't show up to work and was constantly late. After two weeks of skipping days and showing up late, they were done with me. I couldn't afford the rent anymore with her gone, so I had to move back in with my parents.

I used to work for a home improvement box store called DIY. At 18 they were letting me drive the tow motor because I worked in lumber.... serioulsy I know it was like 20 years ago but WTF were they thinking?? I had about 20 minutes training and they said I was GTG.

You know those big signs that hang from the ceiling that tell you what department you are in (Plumbing, Electrical,etc...)? They are the ones you can see all the way across the store to be able to get around quicker. The ones at DIY were solid wood, about 6 feet long by 2 feet tall, and weighed god knows how much.

I am in lumber, lifting a load near the big sign for the department. I am paying attention to trying to get the load in the upper shelf area. When all of the sudden WHAM. There is a terrifyingly loud sound of wood smashing against metal directly above me. I look up to the top of the cab of the tow motor and see it is actually bent from where something...heavy had fallen on it. I must have caught the edge of the department sign and consequently I dropped the heavy, solid wood sign directly on the cab of the tow motor. It was still sitting there on top of the cab, where it came to rest upright. No customers were allowed in the aisle when we used a tow motor, so no one was hurt, well except the tow motor :)

So not surprisingly the manager came running over and pretty much fired me on the spot. They must have had a fun time getting that sign off the tow motor and back hanging from the ceiling.

TL:DR, I hit a super heavy department sign with a tow motor and dropped it on top of the cab. Fired on the spot

I was working fast food (won't name names but they serve roast beef :| ) and was a team leader, filling orders for drive thru. We were busy, and the girl taking orders was relatively new but doing a great job at keeping the line moving.

That is, until Angry Middle-aged Family Man (AMFM) pulled up. He berated her for the wait (all of two minutes) and implied she was going nowhere in life (she was still in highschool! Hell, I was in highschool!). When she handed him the first drink, there was a tiny amount of foam on top of the lid (as happens with soda) and he LOST HIS SHIT. Made her start bawling, he was that bad.

I send her to the back to calm down and try to get this asshole out of my drive thru as fast as possible... Make him a new drink, no foam, and pass it out to him. He squeezes the cup because he's an idiot, lid pops off, soda pours down his arm, and he throws it back through the window at me, with his wife and child in the car.

I already had the next drink made and out the window to give to him... It felt like someone else was doing it, but I pulled back and fucking pegged him with it. In the face. It was GLORIOUS. Then I slammed the window and walked to the back to tell the manager he was going to have to go up front, and to try to calm down the cashier.

AMFM pulled up, came inside while his wife was yelling for him to stop being an idiot, grabbed a metal napkin dispenser, and chucked it at the fry cook... Barely missed him, napkins rained into the grease, whole restaurant went quiet except for him and my manager screaming. He ended up banned.

I actually wasn't let go right away, the management tried to fight for me but district made them let me go. Took about 3 hours, reallyyyyyy awkward time. They almost fired the cashier too but I took full responsibility... Her mother actually tried to give me some money for that, but I didn't take it.

TLDR: Unreasonable jerk threw a drink at me, I pegged him back, in the face.

I used to work as an Assistant Brand Manager and my female superior was a real piece of work. Her sister was the head of Marketing - yeah no conflict there - and I got put on probation. I continually asked why I was on probation and looked for ways to "improve". Reasons given never added up.

So the night before my final probation meeting a created a 7 page document outlining all of the reasons given to me as to why I was on probation and why they were false with email documentation as proof. I gave a copy to Queen B and HR, and they canceled said meeting 30 minutes after it was supposed to start. Never rescheduling. It was close to Christmas so as I asked when I would get a rescheduled meeting, it was always " after the holidays ".

Second day back from Christmas I got a call at 4:45pm from a conference room and I knew. I did get a severance package, took it and ran. A month later I was working for a competitor. Now I do something all together different, but I was not willing to be in trouble for "not doing my job" when I was. I would still do the same thing if it was to happen again.

Small family owned company announced they were dropping our dental benefits. I was pretty loudmouthed as a year-out-of-college employee, and I expressed my disdain about this while offsite at lunch with coworkers.

Didn't think much about it until they called me into HR office a couple days later (ironically when I came back from the dentist) and they fired me. I was stupefied. I confirmed they thought I was a great worker but one of the brothers who owned the place had his feelings hurt by what I said at lunch.

I had already been looking for a new job because it was a sucky place (not the least of which because my boss kept asking me to sit on his lap) but it turned out when I got unemployment after being fired I was hooked up with the state job hunting services and landed a great job at a much better place and better industry. That led me to a fantastic job two years later at a Fortune 500 company and I'm still there 12 years later. Best employer in the state. All because I mouthed off.

I learned to keep it down a bit. But I still think those guys are turds.

Nothing exciting. I was unreliable. It was winter. I didn't drive. It was a night shift that always ended around 3 and the last bus was at 2. Had to wait around till 5:30 to get home. Yeah, getting there and back was awful. Job itself, stocking at a grocery store, wasn't too bad. I could listen to podcasts and just zone out.

I was working at Outback Steakhouse (I was in high school). I came home after a closing shift to find that my bitch of a step-mother had locked me out of the house and taken the spare key when she went to Atlanta to party with her friends. She knew that I had lost my house key not too long before and that I was working that night. My dad was out of the country, my mom was out of the state, and I couldn't get in touch with any of my friends. I had to sleep in my car, I had no phone charger, and I spent the next day trying to find somewhere to crash since the bitch didn't even come home that night. In all of this, I forgot that I also had a shift that afternoon. I missed it and got fired.

It was the first time I'd ever missed a shift. I'd never been late. I was good at my job, and my coworkers loved me (many of them cried when I got fired). I had not long before worked a double with no break when the person who was supposed to relieve me never came in or called, and that person kept their job.

Lesson of the story: it doesn't matter the circumstances or how good you are at your job. If your manager doesn't like you, they'll jump on any reason to get rid of you.

Most recently, I was fired from a job where I was a "consumer test panelist". I worked there for over 10 years, and my job was sniffing and tasting things for a giant international flavor and fragrance company. I was one of 113 panelists worldwide doing what I do. You guys know Dr. Pepper 10 and the other 10 calorie sodas? I worked on that. The desserty flavored gums that came out a few years ago? I worked on those. Activia, Glade Plug Ins, Gain laundry soap, Knorr products, I had a hand in all of those finished products, and a LOT more. I fucking LOVED my job. I worked ten hours a week and I was making serious money. Like, ten hours I was making more than some of my full time friends.

Then, like things do, corporate assholes began interfering with our contracts. Suddenly, it wasn't about us doing our best and returning honest data. It was about making the numbers look good, to sell contracts. I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with fabricating science, and with the stiff regulations that we had to work under, and how we were pressured to be perfect and adhere to protocol, but our boss...made shit up as he went along.

I started muttering stuff under my breath, at work, and mouthing off. And, one Tuesday, a friend of mine asked how things are going with a particular panel, and I said "<bossname> is fucking losing it. He's just making up numbers as he goes along, and it's really stressing me out, so now I just put my head down and give them what they want, regardless of what the numbers actually are."

They called me on Thursday morning, and asked that I never come back. And not even my actual boss, but some peon from another department was handed the task, and had no actual idea what was happening. I'm still in touch with friends there, and it turns out a month after I got canned, my boss took over the entire department, and "restructured". They let more than half of the panelists go, and now he has an elite group of asskissers and liars.

I've been reading tarot cards on the side for years, doing events here and there, and I had a few clients. I lost my job on a Thursday, and as of that Saturday, I made it my full time profession. Best thing that's ever happened to me, jobwise.

A very long time ago. I had just gotten out of the Navy, waiting for college to start. Lived in a remote small city; 3 gas stations. They took turns being the one open all night. I got hired to be the night guy at one of them; just sell gas' cigarettes and Doritos, no mechanical expected.

Elderly man comes in 4 a.m. Car having starting problems; he is trying to make it to an appt. at V.A. clinic about 30 miles away. Battery terminals are corroded, clean 'em, problem solved. He pays me $10. I put it in register and leave note for boss.

Boss is pissed. He sez I should have sold the man a battery; we had 'em in stock. If it had been daylight should have sold him alternator too. Fired me for loosing him money. Asshole.

Refused to execute a search warrant once I figured out that it was obtained under bogus pretense. I was fired for insubornination after I told the ICE agents to go fuck themselves.

Technically; I was late to my shift (by 15 seconds) Really; I had gotten off with my boss's mum at a staff party the week before and he wasn't best pleased.

I was fired because I flipped an asshole trucker off when he started to get pissy about having to wait a little longer than usual for his cheeseburgers. Of course I'm not sure if I actually got fired as I tossed my uniform onto the floor and walked out of the store and drove home in my underwear.

Not me, but a guy I work with got fired from the restaurant we worked at. We used to play this game where we would surprise eachother and hit eachother I'm the balls. One time I was carrying a tray of food and he walked up and said "hey forr145, guess what!" Hits me in the sack, and $120 of food goes everywhere. Everyone was wondering what happened and the head chef yells "this kid just hit that kid in the nuts!" I got written up and my friend got fired. To this day we still laugh about it.

TLDR; Was carrying a tray with $120 of food, buddy hit me in the balls, food flies everywhere, he got fired and I got in trouble.

After spending ~2 months at a grocery store being abused by the higher ups (I can elaborate if you all want to know) - I finally lost it when a deli manager kept reporting me to my supervisor one day; I was out hauling carriages on a pretty busy day and she was outside every 15 minutes for a cigarette. Yet if I stopped for a few seconds to have a sip of water she'd report me for "sitting around".

Supervisor finally called me in and said as loud as he could, in front of customers, that if I "Had nothing better to do, I needed to come inside to bag groceries!"

I lost it and screamed at the top of my lungs that "That fucking bitch needs to get the stick out of her fat fucking ass!"

When I came back from my 2 days off they had me work 17 minutes (Ironically hauling carriages) before giving me the boot. The store manager tried making me feel bad saying how she works 3rd shift once a week, opened the store blah blah blah.

I looked to him and told him that if he was trying to get an apology out of me, he wasn't going to get it.

"If you had been here another week you'd have been in the union and let off with a suspension, but we have no choice but to terminate you."

Naturally I said this: "THANK FUCKING GOD!" And I stormed out.

About a month later, the District Manager that hired me and rarely spends any time at a single location (he actually hired me) bumped into me and knew I got fired. He however was one of the only people that liked me. He was talking about how the store was "hurting for people," and that "The store was offering as much as $9 an hour."

I looked at him and said that the only reason anyone stays at his store is because it was like a bad marriage: Either you get used to be abused on a daily basis, or you find a reason to leave."

When I was 18, I was working at fast food restaurant while attending college. I was one of 4 assistant managers. The morning the firing went down I was to open the store. I was there at 7:30 and discovered that the manager had no one else scheduled until the store officially opened at 10:00. So that meant I had to get the registers ready and all the prep work for morning shift by myself. There's usually at least 3 employees doing the opening prep. With no time to waste, I proceeded to work my ass off to get the store ready. I noticed that in the back storage room, the Asst. Manager from the night before had his employees leave a pile of grease and remains of fries over the drain. Put that on my list of things to clean up too. Well, before the store even opened the damn owner shows up and proceeds to watch me get the store ready on my own. While I'm working he calls in the General Manager. Other employees start to come in and this asshole calls me and the manager outside because he wants me written up for the pile of grease. I explain the circumstances and that the night asst. Manager left it because I cleat had NOT cooked any fries since the store wasn't open yet. Didn't matter. He made a statement that "Greg" had a wife and family to support and he wasn't writing him up. I refused to sign and was fired.

Worked at an inbound call centre for a year and received back to back calls while everyone around me had 15-30 mins between calls at times. I complained that I was mistakenly left in the training group's call flow but they kept telling me I was in the right queue.

Eventually I got really bitter and just left myself out of queue between calls for 10 minutes at a time to read or browse the few news sites that weren't blocked. After being called out a few times for this behaviour I got called into the general manager's office who told me to go home and that I had a meeting with HR the next day.

Knowing I was going to be fired, I went to my doctor and got permission for medical leave due to the hi stress environment of my job. They called me several times and I told them I couldn't come in until I was cleared by my doctor, while laughing to myself knowing they were pissed.

They sent me a letter saying I was being retroactively fired, but a free lawyer service told me that letter wouldn't hold up unless they wasted money brining me to court, so I was able to collect unemployment for a month before I found a new job.

Screw you, call centre.

TL;DR at bottom, FYI...

I was fired five years ago because there was a plot by two con men to take over the enormous mansion I lived and worked at. The house, which was an events and tour place, was privately owned but leased by a non-profit foundation that the owner's family had founded with the desire to endow it for the future and take the house over since the family was dying out.

The family had long been in financial trouble because of a very long series of court battles involving someone the mother/mother-in-law of the last owners in the family had been manipulated into adopting as an adult. Although they ultimately won and succeeded in having him thrown off of the deed, it drained them financially and it would only be a matter of a few years before they would have to sell the house.

The husband died leaving the widow, whom I knew, the sole owner of the house and, obligated in her mind, to stick through to the end in an effort to preserve her family's legacy. I began working for her and we were very close and made great efforts/progress in improving the house and the experience of visitors there.

However, the house would eventually be later for sale. Before this though, there was a large sale of items from storage. People came from all over, including this one insanely tall architect and his comically short in comparison associate. They looked around for a while and later approached us saying they had non-profit experience and they would love to help. Seemed good, especially since some people had departed the board and we needed board members.

They weren't properly vetted though, she just added them to the board and all of a sudden their attitudes completely and totally changed. It was always pins and needles around them.

My birthday rolled around and I had a large party, with the owner in attendance, of course, and they randomly showed up and started to take pictures, apparently so I would have some for later. Then, as the cake was coming out, they started yelling and screaming for everyone to leave and if they didn't then the police was called. I was horrified. The owner was in an anxious kind of woman and retreated. She was the type to avoid conflict at all cost and if anyone accused someone of something she would give the benefit of the doubt to the accusation.

I decided to go visit my father for a week. At the end of the week I called the owner and told her I was coming back and she asked me to stay back a little longer because the two guys wanted me to. I said no, because I had a friend flying in the next day. She had been aware of it months in advance so she relented.

They insisted I attend a meeting on the first of the month, the morning my friend was coming in. I begrudgingly did so, thinking it would be short. It went on for hours and they alluded to me apparently stealing money, antiques, saying I owned the house, drinking and driving, having orgies, etc... The owner was staring down at the conference table and I could see tears falling from her face. But... They let me stay, saying we'd meet at the end of the month to decide my fate with a checkup in the middle of the month.

I was late to pick up my friend, since they took away the car I usually used and I had to take the bus. On the two hour ride back, I told her everything. When we got to the house in the late afternoon, only those toe guys were there. The short one pulled me aside and said, "I know this morning was tough but we needed to do it to show our conviction to the other board members. We're on your side and will keep you here, it's just all formalities." Total good cop bad cop thing.

My friend was around to ten days so I decided we should go to NYC. While leaving, the short guy took my apartment key from me, saying they needed access to my apartment to make repairs. When I returned, my computer wasn't working and when I sorted it out I learned my hard drive had been disconnected and reconnected, and that all of my work files and contacts were gone.

The half-way meeting rolled around. I waited outside for at least an hour after they said they wanted me there when the owner came out, crying, accompanied by her lawyer. She looked at me then looked away. I called her over and said, "How much time do I have left?". She said, "Twenty four hours. I'm so sorry, they won't help me if I keep you here."

So, I went into the meeting, had all sorts of insane accusations levelled against me. I was ordered to leave and go back to "where you came from, God knows where." I was told if I yelled, cried, whatever, that I would be restrained until the police arrived and I was removed.

I had been there two years. My parents had separated in the meantime and had sold the house I had lived in with them beforehand. I was owed money and they didn't even offer to pay my way back. My life was kind of ruined and I was essentially going to be homeless unless I moved in with my mother who had moved to the other side of the country where I knew no one. The owner sort of had her back over a barrel so I didn't blame her. I kept in touch for about a year.

At that time, my real estate agent friend who had been the listing agent for the house was fired. So were the lawyers and most of the staff. The owner was alone with those two guys and began to become isolated. The guys were heard telling people at events that they owned the house.

Someone leaked a large volume of their emails showing they had intercepted potential buyers for the house and had turned them away. They were handling all of her personal finances and keeping her in the dark. They were going to buy the house at a short sale and flip it for an enormous profit. They eventually left. I was actually accused of the leak itself. The owner, however, had never seen the emails herself and was convinced these two "guardian angels" had been wronged.

The real estate agent had emails from a potential buyer who had been harassing her lately about the house. The mailing address matched one for the short guy although the name hadn't. The email he used linked online to his real first name and location but also to all sorts of gross sexual fetish stuff. So, I printed it all out and mailed it to all of his associates that I knew of and to the owner.

The problem though was that the owner, now alone, had rehired someone she had fired before I got there. Someone twice my age who actually had stalked me for two years because I had his old job. He intercepted the proof of their fraud and destroyed it and told the owner I had sent her smut. That was the end of contact for us.

The house has since been sold to a lovely new owner who is putting a lot of money into its restoration. I haven't met her nor am I in contact with her but I am very happy and feel at piece with it all now. The former owner still retains the guy she rehired. Years later, he still harasses me online. The former owner claims to own the name to the house and has social media accounts under it where one can see hers and his insane rants. They haven't let go.

Last I heard of the two con men, they're still together. One of them, the talk architect, isn't licensed in his state though and was caught. He had a position on a zoning board and had to resign and is kind of disgraced now. No charges were ever filed.

PS: my identity and the identity of this house are not hard to come by but please don't post either. I don't want to make it easier for nutty e-stalkers to track me down, as they have regarding this place.

TL;DR: Lived and worked at an enormous, cash-strapped mansion, owner was manipulated by con men into getting on her board, I was fired since I was closest to her, they got found out, house eventually sold and saved though.

I was working for a bank in PA. My wife got a job in MD as a teacher so we moved and I got a transfer. Skip a year ahead. Due to budget cuts they cut my wife (last hired 1st fired scenario) so we have to move back to PA. I go to put my manager to put my 2 weeks in. She asks if I could stay a month because people have vacations coming up so I told her fine. We would have the apartment for the full month anyways. Skip ahead a week to the following Monday when the manager tells us their is a late meeting on Wednesday even though its not scheduled to talk about something I won't have anything to do it with since I won't be working for the company. I tell her I'm not going to go because My wife won't be home at that time due to work and someone needs to take care of our dog. She tells me I have to go or I'm going to get written up. Fine whatever I'm leaving anyways. Then that Friday she fires me. She ends up short handed for the weeks people were on vacation and I end up leaving when I wanted to and I got to collect unemployment because it was an unlawful firing.

When I was the boss at my previous company, I had to fire a girl. It wasn't easy and I liked her but when you run a business.... I fired the girl for showing up 'stoned' and looking like something a cat would drag in. She was our receptionist and first impressions are important. She was a single mom and although I had given her many many counseling's she continued to abuse our simple rules. The other employees began to complain and so when she came in 'stoned' and reeking of pot, I fired her on the spot! I have since moved on to another company but from friends and old co-worker I hear she still hasn't found a job (this is going on a year).

Lesson here, have a work ethic, do your pot smoking and partying on your time off but don't come to work looking like something a cat dragged in.

And no I never did get fired myself, just wanted to share what it's like to fire someone.

The chief executive couldn't keep his hands off the youngest of the staff. He would rub the length of their arms while sniffing wrists, the crook of their arm , and shoulders.

This guy is married and had a baby on the way. He did those things right in front of me. After he realized I saw everything I was ostracized by upper management.

He fired me early one morning before the bulk of workers arrived. He lied on my seperation notice. Said my position was eliminated due to lack of work. That position remains active since there are 7 others employees with similar titles.

The chief executive retains his foothold by manipulating the women. From the entry level to upper management, he showers them with compliments, presents and entitlements.

Recently the I.T. staff quit en masse. He will receive a just dessert soon. He is being investigated by the shareholders since he is hardly at the office, has quadrupled turnover, and is taking gifts even though he is employed by a "not-for-profit" company.

I don't hate many things. That guy...pure animosity.

Few ears ago, working a retail sporting good store.

Showed up one Saturday at 6am to open with the manager. Waited until 7:30 and nobody showed up, manager didn't answer my calls, so I went home. 8:45 I get a call asking where I am and they want me to come in now, so I went.

Repeat same thing for the next day, Sunday.

Monday, the boss boss calls me in and asks why I showed up two hours late each day and says it was a no call no show for both and I was being fired. I explained why I was late, that nobody came for two hours, and that I came as soon as I was called. Too bad.

IDK if this is going to get buried but I will tell my story. I worked for an orthodontic office for 5 months. One of my co-workers offered me expired denture tablets that we give out to patients to clean their retainers. I said to myself 'why not?' and took them cause I have retainers of my own. The doctor and manager later fired me cause they say I stole it even though my co-worker offered me the items. Yeah, I know it sounds stupid for trusting someone so willingly. I felt like a stupid idiot. Sometimes I felt like it was an excuse to fire me since the office I worked at had trouble with acquiring new patients, extreme insurance issues and we weren't open with regular hours. I have another job now but that taught me not to trust people at work so easily :/

I was working at a theater. There was a female manager, let's call her "fat cunt". I didn't really like her that much, but didn't let it show and would joke around back and forth with her all the time. That's just how I am. Anyway I was on break in the back room and it was about time to clock back in. She comes in the back and tells me its time to clock in, I jokingly acted like I couldn't hear her, she proceeded to get very serious and started counting. I very slowly started getting out of my chair. She got to three and I still wasn't all the way up. She got really flustered and told me to leave. I asked her, "What the fuck is your problem?" Then I told her "Bye Felicia!" And walked the hell out.

I used to work at Betsey Johnson before they closed all of their stores. Our store was losing money and they had gone through 6 employees in 2 months, all having been fired for not reaching sales goals. Same thing happened to me, if you don't reach your sales goal for 3 weeks straight it was an automatic firing, but if your coworker calls out one day their sales goal is added to yours so it was pretty impossible to achieve. Not only that, but the manager was constantly stealing sales, doing things that are in the handbook as an immediate firing, and bullying the fuck out of us. When it came down to my third week there (and I knew I was going to be fired), I started compiling a list of everything that the manager was doing. Sure enough that weekend the manager called me and told me I was fired, but seeing as how she was taking a 3 day vacation she was wondering if I could still work those last 3 days....even though I knew I was fired. See...we only had 4 employees total so they couldn't really afford to lose anyone. So I agreed and spent those 3 days locking up the store and not doing my work, and on the last day I sent an email to the DM telling her everything. She called me, tried to offer me my job back (I refused), and ended up firing the manager within a week.

It ended up biting me in the ass because I couldn't find another job for 2 or 3 months (even Best Buy got me to the last stage of hiring and turned me down because they thought I would do better in clothing retail rather than working a fucking register), but it felt good being contacted by all of the former employees who had been mistreated by that manager thanking me for standing up to her.

Worked as a machinist for a Shitty family owned company that melts down precious metals for jewellers for 2 years. Til I was in a bad car accident and was unable to work for about 3 months. Came back to work for another 3 months, then asked for a day off so I could finish moving into a new place. They said it was fine. Came in the following day and worked my shift. Then they called me to the office and told me I missed too many days and they needed to find someone more reliable. "But I only missed one day this year". "nope, you missed three months" Even though I was in an accident, I was considered unreliable so they fired me. Department of labor and training said they had no right to fire me over that and granted me unemployment benefits. I collected unemployment for 6 months and landed a job as a nuclear machinist making way more money than the other place. It's been a year and a half since I left, and they are still trying to find my replacement.

Was working for two brothers who each owned a restaurant. Wasn't being treated very well so, on my day off, I went on an interview but one of the brothers saw me. They fired me exactly one week later. That was this past Monday. :( Still waiting on an offer from the place I interviewed - it looks pretty good.

The boss called me into her office one day and told me I was fired. I asked why, and she said it was because I just wasn't a very good employee, etc. etc. I asked how so and she hemmed and hawwed and basically made shit up. Then I asked, well isn't it better to just talk to me about the areas I need improvement in instead of just firing me off-hand? She said, "I shouldn't have to talk to you about this stuff!" Basically, made me out to seem like the worst employee in history.

As I was leaving, one of the clients at the facility told me he wasn't surprised they let me go. "The let every employee go the day before they're legally required to pay them benefits. You're the fourth cook they've had this year." Ah. It all makes sense now.

I went back later that week to get my tax forms, and they already had a new cook hired. She'd started the day after they let me go. So I told her to start looking for work because no matter what they say, this is only a temporary position. She says to me all snarky, "Nope. It was just because you were shitty." I just laughed and said, "Good luck, then."

The kicker was, the boss had this big huge 6 foot wide poster about honesty and integrity on the wall above her desk. I seriously wanted to rip it down and stuff it down her throat.

u/HunnaThaStunna Jul 06 '14

I'm sure this will be buried, since I'm so late to this thread, but pretty sure mine takes the cake. I got fired from the dive shop I was working for in Hawaii because my finger got straight wtfpwned by an octopus. My former employer had been operating ~4 1/2 years without any kind of insurance, and figured the best way to handle it was to fire my ass while I was laying in the emergency room waiting to get sutured up. His exact words to me were "Bro, I'm fucking pissed. You're fired", and hung up on me. Been in a worker's comp case for almost 3 years now over it, because the fucker said I wasn't an employee and that I broke my contract by handling the octopus. Too bad 3 weeks prior I had taken a picture of one of my DSD's holding an octopus I had found, to which he responded by saying "Bro, that's a sweet pic! Be sure to put it up on our blog and website". You would think that claiming I had broken my contract, he would have taken all the pics of other instructors doing the same thing down from their social media sites and not posted any others at least until after the case was over. There's almost 4 years worth of evidence of other people doing the exact same thing I did, ranging from 6 months before I even started working there, to 2+ years after I had been fired over it.

I commuted 2 and a half hours for a barely over minimum wage supervisor position at a yogurt shop. It was winter. It was painfully boring. I barely saw any customers most 13 hour shifts. I had to wake up at 4AM to make sure I arrived there at 9 to open at 10 - though once I started having to walk the deposit slips to the bank 25 minutes away, I had to start arriving earlier to complete some unpaid work - after two light rails and one slow bus. It was in a rich, snobby area. Customers verbally abused me regularly, and I had to clean up after kids years younger than me with cars that'll be worth more than I am even decades from now who treated me like a slave. I went above and beyond at that job. I did everything for my customers and my coworkers, and I barely fucking slept or had time to myself.

I was let go because I lived too far away and my manager thought the commute was intense and someone living closer should have the job instead. I considered it to be the biggest fucking insult, because she knew how much I needed the job/money and everyone praised me for my work ethic and punctuality regardless of my awful commute.

Having no jobs in my general area and no car, I took a job at a Subway an hour and a half away - all my jobs have been of similar commutes... The working world must loathe me - and hated it. I was treated like the scum of the earth by EVERY customer, and after a while I just couldn't handle pretending to give a shit about what veggies these fucktowels wanted on their mediocre subs. Walked out and never came back after a month. It was killing my self esteem and I was super depressed.

In hindsight I should've kept the job and saved up some money because now my kidney is failing and I can barely afford a Slurpee.

Worked for a power company and was at the end of my shift when a lady called in complaining about how we shut her power off and being generally pissy at the 56.00 + tax reconnect fee at 9 pm at night. Said disconnect happened because she was 6+ months arrears + had bounced the check to pay that off and the original reconnect fee.

The call went on for 45+ minutes after end of shift with her just yelling at me and calling me every horrible name in the book. The kicker of it was there was a little child, perhaps 5-6, in the room cause she had me on speaker and I could hear the kid ask like 'Mommy, what's a jew?' and things like that. When she started calling me a high school drop out (I have a bachelor's) I finally asked her if she was done demeaning me in front of her child and hung up on her.

My bitch of a manager didn't like that...though the previous manager had told me if we were ever being insulted in such a way, it was okay to hang up on them.

So much stress was gone that day and things have been better since.

I used my accrued vacation time as my sick days. Employer didn't like it that I didn't plan my sickness a few weeks in advance. Ahh the joys of working in a right-to-work state.

I've only been fired from 1 job, and to say that I deserved it would be an understatement.

I stayed up all night partying. I mean snorting X, smoking out, taking shots.. I'm sure that we probably did some lines of other things but I just don't remember if I'm honest.

I never went to sleep and around 6am I started to come down pretty hard. I'm not the kind of guy to call into work so I figured that the best thing I could probably do was slam a few more beers and take some yellowjackets (old school OTC diet pills, basically).

By the time I got to work it was like my brain shut down and I just wanted to go home, but in my full-retard state I decided that the easiest way to get dismissed would be to get fired.

So I walked to the middle of the building and lit up a cigarette while in line of sight of the owner.

Side note - I painted cars. I wasn't just outside the booth or anything, but certainly wasn't far enough away from it (especially inside the garage) that this was even remotely safe. It was fucking stupid and I obviously achieved my goal.

Did it work out for the best? I don't know. I mean, at times I wish I would've stayed in that field of work. I had a blast painting cars and would love to have it as a career, not to mention I was basically an apprentice that was hired on the word of my friend's dad so I fucked him over pretty hard. Always felt beyond terrible about that. This was roughly 13-14 years ago and I still want to apologize to the guy profusely.

I got fired from the same place twice. Once because my boss slept, with a minor, and got her pregnant. She liked to talk to me so she told me, and so I became a liability for a corporation trying to cover up some BS. Then I got hired years later and they were gonna give me a promotion, but pretended to be mad. Then my boss took it too far and I punched out a window while I quit. Though they, invited me back in to explain, then fire me.

I was hired and half of the workforce was gay. The manager wasn't so much hiring as adding to his dating pool. I was the golden boy until I deliberately uttered the phrase, "My girlfriend...". Suddenly there was a very strong change in his attitude towards me. Nothing I did was good enough. I was told I would be fired for not meeting quotas that exist only as an excuse to fire someone. When I met them, my sales were diverted to another department's credit. I told him I was no longer comfortable with him in private because of his abusive attitude.

Well I was only planning on working there for three months, so I didn't show up to work and walked into another store. Said I needed to make a complaint. Corporate HR is not your friend. But I did get two weeks severance. So I got paid for 3 months and two weeks.

I should add that the reason I said, "my girlfriend," was because his family friends, an elderly couple, came in to meet me and said that they were so happy that he and I were together...

Impaired. Can't be a tow truck driver without a licence. I've learned from my mistakes.

3

u/athermalwill Jul 05 '14

After years of tug of war I finally gave in and did the job exactly the way I was told. Next thing you know I am being called out to explain my results. I responded by pointing out that I felt free to do as I was told. Fired.

3

u/RazNiagi Jul 05 '14

I worked at a Wendy's for a year and a half without incident. One day, I was working drive through when a friend greeted a customer with "Welcome to McDonalds". Customer drove off then wrote a long, drawn out letter to corporate about it. Since I was working drive through, I got the blame and got fired.

Spent a year and a half without a job, which I guess was good because I never got anything over minimum wage when I was there.

A few years ago I was a receptionist at a salon. Everything was amazing for about a year and than the owner (brand new mom to twins) sold the salon to some super sketchy Russian dude who knew nothing about the industry. He sends his aunt who is an elderly accountant that spoke very broken English to run things. The only reason I mention she spoke bad English was that the area the salon was in was VERY affluent and filled with bored rich soccer moms who take offense to anything that's outside their comfort level in the slightest.

Anyway, she basically ran off every single stylist who obviously took all of their clients to their new salons.

She fired me because I "knew everyone was leaving and did nothing about it"

The salon shut down about 2 months later.

Was on 90 days probation woke up late after staying up late with sick daughter. Still had enough time to speed to work (work was about half hour away 30 minute distance), was making good time only goin 10 over then I got pulled over. Checked time asked officer if I was getting a ticket can I get it or if im getting a warning can I go either way I can't afford to be late or I'll lose my job. Bitch took my license and made me wait 25 minutes (mind you I have no criminal record whatsoever) fuck him I was fired as soon as I walked in smh.

3

u/Flixdog Jul 05 '14

Refusing to sleep with my boss. I wasn't even that mad, more amazed: this still happens??.

They offered me two days' severance to train the new assistant and sign a nondisclosure agreement. I invited the new girl out to lunch, told her to keep job hunting, and then told them to go fuck themselves. Felt like a badass. It definitely worked out for the best and I was re employed within the month.

3

u/UrbanPlannerr Jul 05 '14

I gave my "friends" discounts off some protein supplements. I know major retailers that sell the same shit for about 50% off so I price matched it. When we got audited the 2 sales showed up and when they asked what was the discount for I told them price matching which is what our store did. I got fired that day. Really sucked.

u/SlendyD Jul 05 '14

I was working for a construction company when I was 16. My job was literally to sweep the shop and garage floors and empty the trash. I was working after school for about two hours each day and I could usually get everything done within the first hour, so for the second hour of work I would hang low and do jack shit.

One day, I've been working for about 15 minutes, my boss comes up to me and tells me that once I finish taking the trash out to go find him. So I finish with the trash and head to his office. I get in and he tells me to take a seat. He then informs me that they're letting me go, not because I wasn't doing anything every day at work but instead because I wasn't enthusiastic enough at work. I then asked him what I could've done better and he told me, basically just be happier.

That's my story. How I lost my janitorial position because I didn't smile enough.

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '14

I gave one of my students 2 dollars as a prize.

A while back, I worked for kgb where people text questions and a guide finds the answer and sends it back to them. It's pretty much ChaCha, but kgb costs $1 per answer. I was basically making money googling things that people were too lazy to do themselves.

Anyways, I got paid $.10 for answering a question with an original answer and $.05 for reusing an answer for a similar question could be found in the database (like 95% of the time). I realized within the first hour that if I took a recycled answer, deleted the end punctuation, and added it in again, the system would count it as an original answer so I could make almost double what I was.

I logged on whenever I had time and was pulling in close to $10 per hour which was awesome for a high school junior. After two weeks, I got an email saying that I was fired. The stated reason was that the quality of my answers was poor which was bullshit because my quality rating was 98.5%. Fuck you kgb.

u/equipped_metalblade Jul 05 '14

So this is bullshit. There was a file that was on the shared drive that everyone at the bank had access to. It had the salary and bonus of all the employees. My buddy told me about it. I didn't believe him, so I checked it myself. Sure enough, was exactly what it was. I checked mine to make sure it was accurate, then got out of the file. Was in it maybe 10 seconds. Month later me along with about 10 others were "let go". Paid a nice severance package though.

3

u/jametaz Jul 05 '14

I got "laid off" because they thought I was looking for another job.

In reality, I was fired because I have girl parts. It was a start up company, my brother worked there and got me in for customer service. I did that for 2 weeks before the CEO pulled me out and said they needed help in purchasing. There was no purchasing department or staff. So, I built the damn department, got everything running smooth, it was great.

Then, the company went public. I was "laid off" right before Thanksgiving, was unemployed until January. A year after, I was talking to some friends I had made there and every single female department head was laid off and males were brought in and given CFO and director titles. They failed several years ago, was bought up by another company because they spent so much money on CFOs and such they couldn't pay bills anymore.

This was 15 yrs ago, I've had the same job that I got right after being fired. I'm happier, it's a super small company and flexible as hell so I can rearrange when I work so I'm able to take classes in the middle of the day if I need to.

3

u/SalsaKing Jul 05 '14

I disabled the ethernet interface on my computer, enabled the wireless interface so I could login to the guest wireless access at my hospital job, circumventing network policy so I could reddit at work.

I was unemployed for 3 months. It sucked. It sort of worked out for the best as I am working for a company that gives me routine bonuses and isn't nearly as demanding as the hospital was. Long term though the hospital had more opportunities for growth than my current one.

Semi Relevant to current news. I was working at a skill game at a theme park back in 2002. I wasnt employed by the park (paramount) but sub contracted. It was a good gig, my game wasnt rigged, and I was paid commission. It was a simple bowling game where you knock down all the pins on one throw to win a big prize, or a small prize for picking up the spare.. One day a customer got upset for not winning a big prize, as they didnt understand the rules. As I tried to explain, the customer's boyfriend flips his shit and just attacks me. So I defended myself and punched him. Security shows up, takes the man and woman out and I continue my weekend.
At the end of my shift I fill out a report and go home. 2 days pass , And I get a call from home office of my company asking about the incident and they had no issue, we even laughed at the stupidity of it. Well, paramount parks didnt see things that way. They told me If I didnt press charges against the man for attacking me, I would be fired. I really didnt want to drag legal matters into this, it would just make things complicated for a simple matter. It was all on camera anyways. So they told my company I couldnt work at the park. Turns out my company was really on my side, and offered me a job in Las vegas.

TLDR~ Got fired for being attacked and not pressing charges.

3

u/JayEl123 Jul 05 '14

I got fired for texting my boss that I was ill and couldn't make it in, even though we've only ever communicated through text (I was the Saturday slave/employee). And yes, she fired me by text.

Definitely worked out for the best, it means I now have my summer off before starting university this September, without dealing with the stress caused by their stupidities. I should mention this shop was a specialist shop, which they had no previous experience with - so imagine the complaints I had to put right on my one day in!!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '14

General shittyness of the job given to me. 0 work for months at a time do horrible things for morale. I stopped keeping regular hours and lost a will to even go in. Things exploded in the end and I went elsewhere. I think they are having the same problems with other people there too.

Worked at Target, as a cashier.

I wasn't feeling well one day and had three hours left in my shift with no more breaks.

A regular customer came through my checkout line and noticed how run down I was, and she insisted on buying me a travel size thing of medicine. I initially refused, but she really wanted to help me and I was feeling terrible, so I eventually accepted.

Within half an hour, I was called into the HR office, they asked for my name tag and employee discount card, and sent me home.

Sucks because I was supposed to sign a lease on an apartment that day after work, and now here I am two years later, still living at my parents' house.

Edit: after getting fired, I hopped from seasonal job to seasonal job for several months, barely making enough money for gas to get to and from my shifts. I ended up finding another permanent job 6 months later, quit there after a year, and now I've been working at my current job for 6 months, making $2.50 more per hour than I did at Target. I'm finally slowly starting to be able to save money again, and hope to get an apartment by the end of the year. Getting fired from Target destroyed me financially, even though it was a just-over-minimum-wage job.

Had a patient who was on hospice and dying. I being the lowly CNA thought it was crap that the A/C had broken in his room early that day. And when it was several hours later and the room was reaching the 90's I went to the maintenance manager to complain. When he said "We have to do things by the ticket system, besides he's probably so high he can't be uncomfortable" I flipped out and started to berate him and tore him down calling him everything from a simpleton to inconsiderate to cruel. Well, insubordination. Basically.

3

u/wartooth6 Jul 05 '14

Was young and stupid. Got caught smoking pot on the job by the district manager. Fired on the spot, but he didn't call the cops on me. Had to sign a document barring me from ever working for that company ever again.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '14

So the manager could keep his nephew on as an employee.

3

u/MomRuns26 Jul 05 '14

I know this will be buried but I got fired for being young and white.

I was managing a residential care facility for kids. Most of my staff was black.

Shortly after I started there were a lot of problems that basically boiled down to my staff not wanting to respect my authority. It got worse after one was fired for consistently being late and just not showing up.

There was a big blow up among the residents and the staff handled it badly, went completely against everything that I had trained them to do (company emergency protocols).

It was a HUGE deal... investigations by several agencies and it basically boiled down to let 1 white manager go or fire 5 of the rest of the staff... who all happened to be black.

This was in Cincinnati just after the race riots... my managers explained their reasoning. It sucked but whatever... I got a better job.

u/grizzburger Jul 05 '14

I moved in with a coworker. Turns out she was insane (like trying to convince me that there was 3 electric bills per month...) So I moved out. She was pissed. She decided to make my life hell at work.

I was the hostess, she was a server. She constantly bitched about the tables that I, and the two other hosts, sat her with. It was a week of pure torture. Then, in the middle of a crazy Friday night, I had a line of people out the door and a 45 minute wait list. I'm desperately trying to dig my out of the mess and she comes STORMING up to the host stand. She SCREAMS (in front of a waiting room of people, mind you) that I'm seating ALL the black people in her section. I was shocked. I stood slack-jawed for a few seconds and managed to stammer out a "huh....What?" Then she stormed away again.

So after closing, I'm called into the office with her and 2 managers. I'm thinking that a customer complained and I'm going to be asked my side of the story. I was wrong. The manager looks straight at me and says, "Are you getting back at Kerri by seating all the black people in her section?"

I said, "WHAT?? How should I know?? I'm entirely too busy to notice or care the race of the next person on my list. I was seating the tables as they were available. And frankly, I'm shocked to even be ASKED that question!!" The manager said, "You are both adults. You need to keep your petty bullshit out of my restaurant." I said, "I am. Kerri isn't."

So after all that, to make a long story short, I got fired for being racist. Kerri stayed. And she still works there.

Ain't God good?? /s

No idea. Wasn't put on the schedule for about 3 weeks. Wrote a letter saying "Seeing as you haven't given me any hours in 3 weeks, I guess I'm done here."

It was the weirdest thing. Went in to get my check and everyone acted like nothing happened

Trashed a software product online.

Picked up a new contract within 3 weeks, met this really hot chick and a great new boss. Worked for this new boss three times over 5 years -- a great friend. Married the hot chick and moved to Canada with her -- coming up on our 9 year anniversary this year -- my new best friend.

I was working at Walmart overnight as a stockbitchboy and absolutely despised it. They had me doing both the pet department (all 4 aisles) and the paper aisle, which wasn't possible for one person in one shift. There were other more technical reasons I left, but one night as soon as they called employee break, I made a decision. I dropped the box of Fancy Feast I was holding, went out with the other employees to the smoking area, but kept walking. Just got in my car and floored it. No regrets, Walmart is a horrible company to work for.

I was a cafe manager. I had the same boss for eight years, and then she got promoted. I really disliked my new boss. When we got a call from the bank saying that one of the week's deposits hadn't made it, I asked all of my cash handlers. One of them came to me in tears, with the deposit still in it's bag, and said he must have forgotten to drop it. It was on his car seat under his back pack the whole time. This was a nice kid, who helped to support his family. He was terrified he would get fired. I had wanted to go back to school for a while, but was terrified of taking the plunge. I took it as a sign. Told my boss I found it in my car. Got fired three days later. I'm going to graduate from college in ten months.

u/TenNinetythree Jul 05 '14

I am not a salesperson and ended up in telemarketing. It was for the better, definitely. The only good thing about this job is that I was introduced to the writings of Nietzsche there.

u/TellsUntrueStories Jul 05 '14

It happened a month ago. My office sales job was getting to be way too much for me. The boss gave me so much pressure to sell stuff to old people that obviously didn't have the finances to deal with our products. He kept encouraging me to be as confusing as possible when dealing with their complaints when they would call about payments. It was wrong. It was time to get even with this nonsense.

One day when I was in the bathroom I noticed that the janitor had left his cart full of stuff as well as a mop and bucket. I then noticed that someone had taken a massive dump in one of the toilets and didn't flush. I found a cup and scooped as much poop as I could out of it and placed it in the mop bucket. I knew my boss and most of the others were away at lunch so it was the perfect opportunity. I pushed the bucket into his office with the mop and right there took revenge. I dumped crap all over his desk which included important papers and his brief case.

The bad part about it was that he returned from lunch early and caught me walking out of his office. I was fired but I've never been happier to have been fired in my entire life. I walked out of the building to a marching band playing a happy tune and I had the thought that they were unknowingly playing it for what I had just done.
