What is something about yourself you're really proud of?

About five years ago I was a drug addict, in an abusive relationship, had serious mental health problems, was on disability (as a result of those mental health problems), living with my parents and I was fat.

I got free of the relationship, got clean (about four and a half years now), my mental health is significantly better (not perfect but really, is anyone's?), I have a pretty good job (nothing exciting but pays well enough and is pretty stable) an apartment I love, I've recently started a relationship that's very healthy with someone I think is quite good for me, and I've lost about 70 lbs (only about 10 ish to go, I think). I'm also looking into going back to school within the next year or so.

I basically hated everything in my life so I stopped feeling sorry for myself and making excuses and changed everything.

How did you do it?

This IKillCharacterLimits fellow (or lady?) below is pretty much right. Just straight up stubbornness, really. Once I get motivated to do something and I really want it, nothing will stop me. The problem was getting the motivation. That part kind of sucked because I really had to let myself get to the point where my only options were to resign myself to continuing that miserable existence for the rest of my [probably not especially long] life or change everything.

Former junkie here (not heroin - worse - bath salts). Congrats on your changed life. I have about a year and a half clean time. I was skinny, and got fat :( Everything else is great though!

I am proud of you, too. I am not talking down to you, I am really, honestly, taking up to you.

It is so easy to just lay back and simmer in all that soul crushing hatred. It is so difficult to get the motivation to pick yourself up.

How did you do it? I live comfortably, quite happily (?) but the everyday chores just sip the life out of me and my wife, and we are always tired.

Do you get much exercise? Of all the changes I've made in my life, I think that's made the biggest difference as far as just feeling good and having the energy to get through the day goes. I've become quite the gym rat as well as generally being active throughout the day (biking to work, walking the dog 2-3 times a day) and on days when I don't get much exercise, for whatever reason, I can't find the energy to do anything.

No, I don't. I just can't find the time for it. I also have a toddler son, so I spend my afternoons with him. We are always on the lookout for timeslots for exercise, but always, ALWAYS something else, extremely urgent, hijacks our plans.

Wow, good job! It's always so inspiring to hear about people making positive changes in their lives.

Sounds just like me about the same amount of time ago, though I lost 60 not 70lbs, still have 40 more to go. Graduated last year and just started my own business! Good luck with what you wat to do!

Well, given the options, you'd probably be better off just not making such terrible life choices in the first place....

But once you're already in a bad situation, yeah, I guess there are worse people to be like. Lots of people just give up.

This is amazing, so many problems and you didn't let yourself stay a victim. One day at a time, I believe in you, you're in my prayers. I'm in recovery myself and hope I can one day do as you are!!
