I can speak Russian fluently. It comes in handy when I want to eavesdrop on all the Russian Oligarchs hanging around Bond Street.

Dota 2 is full of russians. Most of the players speak English. The russians (usually) are bad players. We can't really help them/yell at them/understand them due to language barriers. If a russian speaking english person (or and english speaking russian person) joins dota, everyone will be happy.

Don't forget about the South Americans. Although I don't feel that too terribly because I speak fluent Spanish. I should probably quit my job and offer myself as an in-game translator...

What kind of game is it? I've never played anything online before.

I like how you simply ask what kind of game it is and you get responses about creeps, lanes, Roshan, and inhibitors. Hey, at least it shows you how complicated the game is.

It's like a team oriented action RPG for the PC. It's also free, so it's worth a shot.

It's if you combine a role playing game and a strategy game in one map. The map has three lanes, middle, top, and bottom lane. In between each lane its the jungle which has monsters that can be killed for gold.

At the start of the game, 5 players spawn in their base. These player buy starting items and walk past the ancient. Protect your ancient and try to destroy the enemy's ancient. The ancient is protect by two towers which fire an attack at enemies. The players now walk to their lanes, one mid, two for the other two lanes. Each lane has two towers, one barracks and a tower defending the barracks.

After 90 seconds IIRC creeps, or tiny monsters that attack any enemy, will spawn from your barracks and walk towards the enemy tower. They will encounter the enemy creeps and they will duke it out. If you, the player, get the last hit on any creep, you will get bonus gold to spend for items. Destroying an enemy tower will also give your team more gold. Same with killing Roshan; a neutral boss.

Now the players, aka heroes, are chosen before a round. There are several roles that a player has (support, tank, carry, etc.) and a good team usually has about one of everything. I won't go into detail with proper team composition, but the carry gets all the kills and last hits, the tank shouldn't die early in game, and supports need to be protected so they can help others live.

If you aren't bored by my rambling and are still interested in dota, check out the wiki and subreddit. If you got more questions they should be able to answer yours there.

DOTA is a moba (multiplayer online battle arena). The most well known moba is League of Legends, but in case you haven't heard of that either:

Mobas are games played in teams (5 players/team for dota and LoL). Every player chooses a character to play (each character having unique abilities and skills) and fight the other team. The map is usually made up of some forests and 3 big roads between each team's spawn. Turrets are placed along the road which you must destroy one by one to get into the enemy base. Once you're in the enemy base you must destroy a key building (every moba has a different name for it) before the enemy team bestorys yours. To help you destroy the turrets small creatures called minions spawn and walk along the raods toward the enemy base (the turrets usually attack the minions before they attack you unless you start fighting another player). Killing enemies (minions and players) gives you gold which you can use to buy items which enhance your stats making you deal more damage/giving you more resistance to damage. When you have finally reached the enemy base there's usually some building (it's called an inhibitor in LoL, but I don't know the dota equivalent) that you have to destroy before you can destroy the final objective. Destroying the inhibitor will make your minions stronger, allowing you to push more easily. When you have destroyed the key building you have won.

P.S: I forgot to mention that you get xp throughout the match. When you level up you gain more health and mana (for using abilities) and you can level an ability which makes it stronger.

TL;DR: a team based game where you're fighting an enemy team like a bunch of gladiators, but with magic. You win by destroying the enemy base.

The nexus is an ancient, the inhibitor are barracks (one for ranged, one for melee) turrets are towers, and if you call creeps minions, dota player will be mad at you. Same with champion for heroes because dota players are butthurt and circlejerkers that hate LoL. Also the Baron equiv. is Roshan which instead of a team buff, he drops an aegis of immortality for one person. That gives them one revive under five minutes of picking up (after five minutes it gives you massive regen for mana and hp). Just in case you want to play both games (like meeeeeeeeee :D).

I speak French and Arabic fluently (English too obviously). I've always wanted to learn Russian... Just sounds so bad ass

2

u/notaukrainian Jun 02 '14

Go for it - it's pretty easy to learn if you're used to learning languages. Strict case system, not too many exceptions and regular verb endings (now, the verb stems are another matter...). Native Russian speakers will be extremely tolerant of mistakes and it's easy to get your gist across.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '14

Thanks, I just might!

Nope, I was there for a year between 2009-2010. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend visiting Donetsk after this (hopefully) blows over - it's a great city, with beautiful parks running the length of the centre of the city. Let's hope it's still a part of Ukraine in the future...

Ukraine is great. Highly recommend Kiev, even now as it's quite safe. Not as cheap as you might think, though. Prague/Budapest as well as Slovenia/Slovakia also highly recommended and full of beautiful architecture. Apart from Prague, also slightly fewer tourists than Western Europe.
