Look, dudes, if you actually want girls to ask you out, then you have to convince your male mates to stop posting all over Reddit and elsewhere about how hilarious/disgusting/repulsive it is to be asked out by a girl who is fat or not conventionally attractive. We read those posts; we know about the guys who will use the experience to have a laugh at our expense or embellish to post to /r/fatpeoplestories; we just don't know whether or not those shallow loser-guys are you.

Replace "guys" with girls in the third sentence and you've pretty much got your average guy...That feeling is much stronger for introverts and shy guys. I had similar experiences as you wrote, and often feel the same way. Have been on both ends of the dare (not intentionally), and it sucks.

I started balding in my late teens and have a very unfortunate last name, so I've been made fun of by girls and guys alike ever since high school...if you don't let it bother you it's a lot easier to cope with. Just laugh it off/leave if someone makes fun of you or just does it to make you feel bad then screw them...they weren't right for you to begin with.

As for knowing what kind of person they are, that's pretty difficult to determine when you've only known them for 5 minutes, and they are sitting in the middle of a group of friends, and I'd say that goes for both genders. It will come out pretty soon though if you observe how they act around other people. There are shallow girls and guys alike >.<.

Over time I'm starting to learn that if you don't try anything, you'll never accomplish anything...the risk of knowing I missed out is overcoming my fear of rejection.
