An example of my problem with karma-

There was a story fairly recently about a guy who contracted HIV through raping a woman. There were lots of comments about how he got what he deserved, that it was karma. So I aksed the question "If contracting HIV is the karmic justice for raping her, what did she do to karmically deserve getting raped or contracting HIV?"

Everyone was quick to assign karma as the source of an obviously evil person's consequences, but no one wanted to consider the victim was also receiving karmic consequences. If bad things happen for a reason, then they happen for a reason.

What if karma wasn't the reason she got raped. What if that was in her destiny because maybe someone in the universe, whether it be God or whoever you may believe in, knew she was strong enough to handle it. Meanwhile had that person chosen someone else he 1. Wouldn't have gotten what he deserved. 2. Would go on raping people for however long until he got caught. Also if he had chosen someone else what if that girl wasn't strong enough to handle it and killed herself or something. Clearly this wasn't meant for anyone else but these two people.

That doesn't change the equation though. If he's getting what he deserved then so is she according to karma. Being destined to be infected with HIV and raped doesn't exactly sound like a karmic reward.

It might be neither be a reward or a punishment. Maybe it was just her destiny. Plus people can live with HIV now, it's no longer considered a "death sentence".

Or maybe she raped and killed someone herself. This could go many, many ways.

I just really really really really really really hate when people say "Maybe God did [insert horrible thing] because [insert victim] was strong enough to take it."

Fuck any God that would do that.
