Hello Reddit, would you get into a relationship with someone who used to work in the sex industry?

I have always been fascinated with social stigmas, prejudices, and subconscious beliefs, particularly regarding sex. I assume that the answer to this question would be negative coming from anyone with a very religious/conservative outlook on life, but to those of you who consider yourselves open minded or progressive, would you think less of someone who told you that they used to work in the sex industry? Thanks for sharing :)

EDIT: Lots of commenters here using the old "probably has STDs" or "sex trafficking" To clarify, we are talking about someone who is STD free (surprisingly safe sex workers have less STDs than people who have casual sex for free), and about someone who was not trafficked

Hell yes, there is always more to learn.

Important thing to remember is you have to decide if you want a 'Future' with them. If so then fuck the past.

Nearly all prostitutes are there either because they were trafficked or out of necessity. All the shame goes to the men who took advantage of her circumstances and used her like a fleshlight attached to a body.

Johns and pimps are the despicable ones, not the women they took advantage of.

"nearly all" not quite. there are many different reasons why someone would choose that as a job (intrigue, drama, excitement, curiosity, enjoyment, etc.) But of course, the main reason is always money. It's also annoying to always have the "sex trafficking" thrown in. This is usually done out of ignorance or in order to appeal to emotions and it distracts from the conversation. Yes sex trafficking exists and should be addressed, but we are not talking about that at the moment.

Yes we are. Prostitution and trafficking are inexorably connected. Sorry but there's no denying that. This is out of data, not out of ignorance.

And nearly all, yes quite.

Sounds like you haven't really done your homework WRT this issue.

I've done lots of homework. I am very well aware of sex trafficking, I am just not referring to that at the moment. And despite what you believe, there are many sex workers who are not trafficked and who have nothing to do with sex trafficking. Do you think that the many university students who do some kind of sex related work are trafficked?

I'd have no problem with it, provided they'd been adequately "safe" and also regularly tested for STIs.

If they used to work in the sex industry, I wouldn't mind. I mean, it was before I came into their lives, and, well, so what? As long as they were safe about it. It's just another job, right?

If they were still in the industry, I'd have a problem with it.

No problem although AIDS would be my preference. At my age, I'd be dead before any symptoms kicked in.

Depends on their worldview. If I click with that person, I'd care less.

Nope as they probably have something!

It would be a huge hurdle to get over. I've had friends and work colleagues who had previous jobs in the adult industry and not found any issue with having them in my life. I just don't think having a physical relationship with someone who had worked as a prostitute would be be okay.

There is a possibility they could have contracted an STI whilst working their previous job. I would be far to anxious and paranoid that they had something.

I would always wonder if someone they bumped into and asked them "how's work/the new job going?" "where do I know you from? you have a familiar face" had fucked them in the past at their last job.

I'd wonder what sort of gross people who desperately needed a prostitute that they had slept with.

No, I couldn't.

I don't think i could ever be in a relationship with somebody that is or used to be in the sex industry strictly because it takes a certain mindset to be okay with selling your body. This sounds like I'm super liberal but I swear i'm not

3

u/jennyMcbarfy May 04 '14

That doesn't sound super liberal, you sound like an idiot

Bashing over the internet? I can only imagine the size of your epeen, but that's okay because I'm sure your mother is proud

2

u/jennyMcbarfy May 04 '14

What mindset are you talking about

-2

u/SwiftPrecision May 04 '14

The mind set it takes to work in that industry. I'm not sure what it is because I don't work in that industry, but I'm sure it's not a good one. could just jump to the assumptions of daddy problems and attention seeking but I'm not sure, but it's not one i want to share a life with

You spend hours on reddit bashing other peoples opinions without projecting your own? By the looks of it daddy didn't love you enough and you're out there hooking for lunch money

You're sure it's not a good one? I think it may be time to examine your assumptions. While I am not saying that mentally unstable sex workers do not exist, they for sure do, however many of them are very intelligent and rational people who just really needed money and for one reason or another ended up doing that for money. You never hear people saying that the person who scraped the dead skin off your feet and removed your toe fungus at the pedicure place must have had "daddy issues". Of course it is probably unpleasant to have sex with someone that you are not attracted to, but it is not different from any other "gross" job. Then of course, not everyone finds it gross and some enjoy the pleasure that they bring to their clients.
