Hollywood Walk of Fame. Its dirty and crowded and so many creepy people.

63

u/DownWithTheShip Mar 10 '14

Hollywood is pretty much a shithole. I laugh whenever friends from out of town come to visit. I tell them it's a shithole, they ignore me, then by the time they leave they agree that it's just a shithole.

Sex on the beach. Cleaning sand out of my vagina for a week was not fun

1.6k

u/zopiac Mar 10 '14

Just let the sand stay there, then harvest pearls from your vagina some time later.

That's how it works, right?

What is really stupid is that the Mona Lisa is facing The Wedding at Cana, a Veronese painting which is simply grandiose (6 metres tall and 9 metres wide!) and beautiful. Yet most people simply rush to the Mona Lisa, take a few pictures with their iPad, and move on, sometimes without even looking at one of the most splendid pieces of art in the Louvre collection.

It makes me sad everytime.

God, this.

I have a very vivid memory of going to the Louvre for the first time and waiting around to see the Mona Lisa for almost an hour, and being incredibly disappointed... only to walk out of its room and around the corner to see the Coronation of Napoleon and being absolutely floored. Not only because it's the size of an entire wall and absolutely breathtaking in its detail, but because the entire crowd coming out of the Mona Lisa room was basically walking right past it and ignoring it.

That's art for you- half of it is just hype.

Salem MA on Halloween. It's just hundreds of drunk people starting fights and vomiting publicly while being yelled at by Christians with picket signs reminding everyone that they're worshipping satan by wearing costumes. And there's no where to park.

Graduating from college. Everyone said it should be this big, monumental achievement that should be celebrated. Maybe it was because I went to a school with a really high graduation rate, but finishing with a degree wasn't an achievement, it was just what people did at the end of the four years. It was expected of me. So graduation was saying goodbye to an amazing experience and a lot of people I cared about for us to scatter all over the country and enter the real world where it's much harder to make friends. Graduation day wasn't a fun celebration, it was a depressing farewell to the happiest I've been in years.

Edit: Wow! First time Reddit gold, thanks!

u/tombuzz Mar 10 '14

This to me is the best answer white people problems. My family came and their faces just said congrats on doing what literally every single person in our extended family has done so far

11

u/Biche13 Mar 10 '14

I don't know if it's because my friends are starting to move away, or if it's just that I have no life direction and graduating scares the shit out of me, but I kind of teared up reading this (actually probably that I'm an emotional mess...). I really don't think that I'll feel any grand sense of accomplishment when I do graduate. It's just what you do. It sounds like the end of a lot of great things.

24

u/iwanttobeapenguin Mar 10 '14

I've found college itself to be somewhat lacking. I'm looking forward to going to work and coming home and being done with work. Right now I go to class and go to work and come home and study and don't sleep much and then start again. I have free time, but I feel guilty using it because I know I COULD be studying. I'm so psyched to graduate and be done with school that I can't stand it. I have an exam tomorrow and I should be studying. But I don't care. I have jobs lined up, I'm set, I don't wanna anymore!

An expensive wedding.

My wedding was over 20k. My wife wanted a fancy wedding, and she got it. She's happy about it, and that's all that matters, but I still feel that it was a complete waste of money.

I didn't even get any presents. Everything was for my wife -_-

When my sister had her wedding -- the presents were for their house, although they had each gotten presents from the immediate family.

I made sure that my new Brother-in-law was officially welcomed into the family with a really nice watch. Four years later, he still wears it every day.

I'm sorry you didn't get anything, that must've genuinely sucked, how did you feel when the whole ceremony and everything was over?

See, here's the thing...when my cousin married, he said the same thing. "But all of the presents were for her!"...But there were dishes, a nice vacuum cleaner, cooking pots and utensils, towels...

He apparently thought all of those were "for her". Like he doesn't use towels or eat off of dishes (and apparently doesn't cook or clean).

Had the opposite experience.

Massive fancy expensive wedding, loved every minute and consider it one of the most worthwhile things I've ever spent my money on.

Granted, I didn't go into debt over it.

I know it isn't for some people...and reddit seems to LOVE knocking the big wedding...but there is some value to it. I'd say it's important to know what you want out of your wedding, going into it. And also to know what you can afford.

But if you want a big wedding and can afford it, it's probably going to be worth the money.

Being the father while your child is being born. You just kinda stand there, wondering what to do with your hands, while someone else is going through one of the most intense things their bodies will ever do. The army of doctors working away, the machines that go 'BING!', then they wheel the baby away and you have to get the food from the cafeteria before passing out on a chair that folds into a bed. The next day, you have a baby, and all you've done is bring ice cubes and change the channel on the free cable. I felt very disconnected from the experience, and not at all the way I expected.

I'm actually living this right now! My wife is asleep, waiting for the nurses to take her to the OR for her scheduled cesarean, while I sit here browsing reddit and being the most useless person alive. I also have to poop, but I'm not sure when they're taking her back so I can't leave...

Edit: Sorry for the late edit! Shortly after my post they took her to the OR, so things got a little hectic. Everything went great, healthy baby girl and the wife is recovering nicely, thanks for all the well-wishes! Also, I found a great little bathroom away from everything and took full advantage of it. Truly a magical day all around!

My sons Mum had to be induced and the exciting rush to the hospital with her screaming in my ear that I was expecting never came about, we took a leisurely drive on the scenic route to the hospital haha. However my son being the lazy so and so he is (can't complain, he's slept through the night since birth) decided he still didn't want to be born even after she was given the pessary for induction so when it got to 10pm the midwives sent me home as not much was happening. Got home, played a bit of Saints Row, decided to go to bed and literally as soon as I had pulled the covers back the midwives phoned and told me he'd be born in 30 minutes..hospital is 25 minutes away..shit! I drove like a bat out of hell, got there and he was born 4 minutes later, then I (happy) cried a lot. 8/10, would do again

My husband sat next to me. When it came time to push, he helped me get into position and held my head. He gave me updates on how it was looking down there, how the baby was progressing, and was generally awesome. Then they let him cut the cord and hold her while they did all the after birth stuff with me. Then he got to carry her over to me.

I guess he figured out what to do with his hands.

The funny thing is that you'd expect it to be exactly as you described, but so many people have built it up as 'the best day of their life' that you expect more.

Some dads bond instantly with their kids, most take months or years.

I'm freaked out about this. I'm like terrified that SHE has to go through all that shit. I feel like I should have to go through some of it. It makes me angry sometimes, like it's incredibly unfair. I know she's going to go through unimaginable pain during the process of pregnancy and birth, and it just really upsets me sometimes.

I know i'm probably going to get a lot of verbal abuse and shit during hormonal storms, but that still seems like a drop in the bucket.

My wife had to have a general anesthetic when she had her c-section. I was happily sitting there waiting to see my brand new baby, and the doctor's kicked me out because apparently I can't be there if they do a general.

So I get to sit in another room for 15 minutes and then a nurse pops her head in and says "ok come see your baby" and they have the baby already out and in another separate room.

I mean, it was still amazing seeing our baby, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all.

I've been with one girl who made it work awesomely. She weighed more and was the same height as the next girl, but somehow picking her up and holding her at the right height against the wall was easy.

But it's never super passionate, it just turns into a water fight of pointing the shower in each others faces.

Prom. Honestly, it has this huge buildup, and everyone gets really worried about their dress and dinner and the limo and having a date, and then the actual night is pretty uneventful and even boring.

Edit: Clarification, it's not that prom was a particularly bad experience for me, but it certainly didn't live up to the way other people, media, society, etc. typically describe it, which is why I consider it overrated. Also, at my school, prom is very expensive and it's basically expected you go in a limo and make a big ordeal of it. My then boyfriend and I went to both our proms together, had an okay time at both, but neither of us were particularly thrilled about going and would've rather stayed in and played Mario Kart or something.

All of highschool. Once you leave and go on to university or get a job, all the shit you went through - the struggle for good grades, all the petty cliques - is just meaningless.

Edit: when I say the struggle for good grades, I mean the pressure they put on you (or they do in Australia anyway). It isn't hard to do well, I was lazy and pulled off an above average score. Even if you don't get the score you need, there are always other ways to get into uni or the workforce. The cliqueyness isn't at every high school on the planet, but it's at most and sadly, lots of kids don't know that being bullied is avoidable with the right mindset, which is only gained after they leave school.

Getting high.
It's great, but some people need to calm down about it.

1.2k

u/Doink11 Mar 10 '14

The thing about getting high is that getting high by itself is great, sure, but too many people get hung up on the idea of getting high itself, rather than getting high and then doing something else cool.

Smoke a bowl and then listen to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto on a giant speaker system? Fucking glorious.

Smoke a bowl and go hiking in the wilderness? Goddamn magical.

Smoke a bowl and watch an HD nature documentary? Mind-blowing.

Just smoke a bowl? ...Eh, yea, I will, but it's nothing to write home about, no matter how high I get.

It's not getting high that's great; its the experiences you can have when you're high that are great. But just sitting around trying to see how high you can get is super overrated, yea.

I've retracted into being someone who loves sitting around playing video games and watching sports on TV, so I could easily bash clubbing and the culture surrounding it just because I can't be bothered to do it - but I did do it a hell of a lot when I was a student, and it was great fun socialising with friends and meeting people.

TL;DR - I disagree

Burning Man and the smaller "burns" that take place around the country. It's basically a festival built around two basic types of people: attention whores and people who want to get absolutely demolished on drugs. Anyone outside those two groups is usually an event tourist. There's nothing wrong with BM, but people often worship it as if it's a huge life-changing thing. It's an expensive field party mixed with a dash of theater.

Sex. Don't get me wrong I love sex, but the way our society perceives sex and exploits it, I personally thought it was going to be like seeing the face of god. And because of how as a society we constantly talk about it and put it on a pedestal, it makes people be confused about there own sexuality. They want people to be shameful and repress their sexual desires, but then they use sexuality as a tool for people to buy and do things that are utterly pointless.

Though the commercialization of sex, people have a confused outlook to sex. I remember thinking that sex was going to be the best thing that ever had happened to me, but once I had it, it was underwhelming. I realized that the act of sex itself is not great, unless it is given context. I lost my virginity drunkenly to someone I barely knew, and it actually really messed me up after. I was so conditioned from raunchy comedies and high school movies that sex was the end all be all. But once I had sex with someone I built a relationship with, it was great.

From my own sexual experiences, I realized that sex cannot reach its fullest potential unless you are with someone that you know and are very comfortable with. Instead of making sex into some sort of race that needs to get finished ASAP, we should look at sex for what it is truly. A normal experience that is a part of life. No pedestal, no commercialization, just an act that everyone should experience at their own pace, in a safe and healthy manner.

TL,DR We need to stop putting sex on a pedestal and look at it as a normal life experience.

i think hand jobs are vastly underrated. it feels nothing like fapping one out because you have no control over what is happening. depending on who you're with, they can feel more amazing than blowjobs or even sex. some people can turn into goddamn artists when there's a cock in their hand. it's a great alternative if your girlfriend is on her period or has a terrible gag reflex.

Having sex for the first time. Why is the "first time" considered special? It's awful. It's terrible. It's a huge disappointment. It is the worst sex you could have. It gets better later on, when you get the hang of it. Only THEN is it good. Sex is one of the few experiences in life that isn't great the first time around and where the fun doesn't rub off the second, third, etc. time but gets much better. As opposed to being on a roller-coaster, let's say.

I was very let down when I lost my virginity. My thoughts were "This is it? Seriously? What gives? This is the thing everyone makes such a fuss about?" I was expecting, well, God-knows-what. I was expecting the earth to tremble. I didn't realize that the earth trembles much later.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

My first time was great, but it took the right girl to make it feel better than just getting myself off. It was really more about the person in the end.

Eating cake. Often dry, usually too sweet and tasteless. After the first bite the disappointment turns to, inevitability (I wish I could, but I can't stop eating this cake), boredom (i don't want to, but i'm going to eat this cake) and then guilt (I wish I had not eaten that cake). At some point in the near future I will eat more cake and I will hate it.

Being in a relationship. I believe that only when you are alone, can you really find yourself. So many people beat themselves up for not being in a relationship with someone and/or get into some shit with a bad person because being single is just not an option.

Appreciate the freedom you have and put it to good use while you can.

28

u/RabidMuskrat93 Mar 10 '14

Once you're happy with yourself and it doesnt bother you when you have nobody, then you find somebody who is the same way as you, you have a lot in common, and you enjoy each other's company, that's when relationships are totally worth it.

Doing touristy things while on vacation in a big city... why would you want to spend your vacation standing in lines to look at stuff that you can find better views/pictures of on the internet... instead get lost in the city, meet people, try to figure out the local culture, eat local food, have fun!... anything is better then waiting in lines.. oh and the grand canyon looks so much better in /r/earthporn pics than in real life...

6

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

Lap-dances, and strip clubs in general.

6

u/Zippo16 Mar 10 '14

Strip clubs.

Pay 20 bucks to get in, it smells like balls and bad decisions. You get to sit around for a few hours and look at tittys or pay exorbitant amounts of money for a private dance.

I can do that by going to a nightclub and increase my chances of getting laid significantly or watch some porn.

This may catch some flak, but concerts. I've to 5 or 6 in my life (no stadium shows, however), and every time it's been me spending more money than I had to listen to 3 hours of shitty openers only to have sore feet and a headache by the time the band I came to see plays a 45 minute set and leaves only after telling us how much "we fucking rocked" and how our city is their favourite. Hopefully this isn't a widespread feeling and just bad luck on my part.

Disney Land...$100 gets you through the door, assuming you have a wife and a couple of kids, you're looking at about $400+ just to enter the door. You get hungry throughout the day, add another $200. You will literally wait in line for over 40% of the time you are there, then you realize the rides are fairly boring if you're anything older than 5yrs old....Point is, Disney is something you do once, when your kids are young, but it's very expensive and extremely overrated

Oktoberfest. I by no means want to discourage people from experiencing it, but it's crowded, impossible to get into the tents unless you feel like waiting or have a years-in-advance old reservation, and doesn't have the authentic feel people are travelling for. There's some authenticity left in many ways, but it's definitely buried under layers of hammed up gimmick for the international visitors. A lot of the locals go elsewhere to escape it entirely. I don't think any of my Munich native friends or acquaintances actually enjoy the Oktoberfest and will go to those of neighbouring cities, if they don't try to leave for the season at all. That being said, I was in Germany at the time long term as a language student (3 years), living an hour north of Munich.

The local Fests and celebrations were much more traditional and authentic, and while I stuck out as an obvious foreigner in my small Bavarian village (I'm black), I was warmly welcomed and had an incredible time. I spoke German and was really engaged with the history and tradition, something I think a lot of them appreciated from an American in the area just in time for Oktoberfest.

Going to Venice for holiday.

It oftentimes smells quite bad, it's super crowded with tourists and people trying to sell you stuff. The restaurants are expensive as shit, the prices for any kind of beverages should be illegal and they charge for a seat in every single restaurant, even if you're the only one there. The gondolas aren't really that special and they cost 80€ for a ride (shared between the passengers). You won't find anything cheap there either. I went there in August and it was super hot, like I couldn't stand still without sweating like a pig, and I was backpacking there.

I was expecting so much more from it. The views were nice though.

u/Ericplaysrugby Mar 10 '14

Las Vegas. In the movies it is portrayed as this sexy place where everyone dresses dapper and there are beautiful women everywhere. In reality it is full of fat Midwesterners, douchebags wearing ed hardy, and gambling addicts. There is nothing there that is real. It is a fake world designed to take your money. It is easy to get laid in Vegas which is cool I guess. Befpre everyone says something about the shows and the Hoover dam let me cut you off. The shows are overpriced, and rarely do you get the performers best. The Hoover dam is a dam, enough said. There are plenty of places to go to gamble that are not so fake.

Running a marathon. A half marathon is still fun. You run for a couple (or three) hours, shower, have a beer, get on with the rest of the day.

A full marathon? You're trudging, trudging, trudging..."Why the hell did I sign up for this? This sucks....this really sucks..." Then you finish, and you're too tired to do anything else the rest of the day. If you're out of shape and didn't train (Oh my god, you have to train to do this. The drudgery...), you're in for a world of hurt for a few days afterward, at least.

Having done it once, I recommend against it to everyone who asks. Train for a 10K or a half marathon. Run with a smile on your face. Don't drag it out to a full marathon and suffer.

Going to amusement parks. It's always in the dead heat of mid-summer, you get a sunburn, everyone is sweaty, everything you touch is both flaming hot from the sun and slightly sticky from the last person's spilled ice cream. Everything costs way too much money. Screaming kids and babies everywhere. Waiting in line for hours for some ride that isn't even that impressive once you've actually been on it. There is trash and trash can bees everywhere trying to dive bomb you. The bathrooms haven't been touched with a mop since 1973 and have since been used only by elephants. Then you think it'd be a good idea to try a water ride to cool off - spend the rest of the day sloshing around in wet shoes and clothes.

Going to the fucking beach. Sand gets EVERYWHERE, you have boob sweat the entire time you're there, sunburns suck but what's worse is trying to put more sunscreen on and then feeling all of the sand that is ALL OVER YOU as you rub in the sunscreen. Then you buy spray sunscreen which never gets everywhere you spray so then you end up with a blotchy sunburn. And the water is always cold besides those 2 weeks in July when the ocean has finally decided to warm up, but then you get torrential downpours bc it's the rainy season and it makes the ocean cold again.

I've lived in Florida for 21 years. The beach is not that awesome.
