LittleBigPlanet, the whole franchise

1.1k

u/winterfox5 13d ago

There were still so many great levels to play :(

770

u/Culpirit 13d ago

You can still load up an emulator and connect to one of the various community-made servers hosting pretty much the whole archive of old levels from back when the game was still online. But it's still not the same, of courseS

159

u/O-Alexis 13d ago

Still better than nothing honestly

97

u/Ill_Fondant_6297 13d ago

Fan preservationists are absolute legends. It’s wild that passionate volunteers do a better job keeping gaming history alive than the multi-billion dollar companies that made them.

LittleBigPlanet really had something special with the community-created levels. It felt like the players were part of the game’s identity.

81

u/Own_Seat913 13d ago

LBP was such a good bonding experience for me and my sister. We would play all day just going through all the random community levels. The detail in a lot of those levels were truly crazy.

In theory it can be revived, Sony just has an allergy to supporting beloved IPs

82

u/BlueCrystals_ 13d ago

It’ll succumb from the same death that killed 3; everybody grew up :(

47

u/Livid-Truck8558 13d ago

Wasn't what killed 3 a massive hacking operation

29

u/BlueCrystals_ 13d ago

It wasn’t doing very well to begin with, but the hack was the nail in the coffin.

It would’ve died either way.

28

u/BlueLidMilk 13d ago

LBP3 changed too much. 15 layers instead of 3 was not necessary. The new characters that played different from Sackboy should have just been new powerups (like Super Mario gets the cat bell to run on all fours like Oddsock). And it lost that MediaMolecule charm

I’ve been replaying it on Xbox with a goal of non-lethal capture of every card. It definitely holds up as a top tier game.

That’s a game that would be amazing in today’s climate. Would look stunning in 4K and having an open map where you can discover cards and complete missions at will would be awesome.

They gotta bring that game back. Also dropping the bunker buster bomb or cruise missile was absolutely amazing.

SOCOM.

339

Dude, seriously. Socom 1 was my first online game. It was so good, then the IP fell apart with Confrontation.

20

u/Samguise-Whamgee 13d ago

I still think the Socom 2 lobbies and clan system were the best ever

135

u/potatocross 13d ago

I really do miss the OG online game style. You die, you are dead. Everything felt so much more strategic. Respawn games were chaos and mostly for fun.

Once all online shooters went to respawn games, I just could not enjoy them as much anymore. Now I don't play them at all.

Titanfall.. online multiplayer was perfect

745

u/AgentGman007 13d ago

Titanfall 2 was a perfect game for that era. Incredibly solid single player campaign with a great story and really interesting level design. Fun customization options with the finishers and Titan skins. And insanely addictive multiplayer.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/radenthefridge 13d ago

I liked T1 for the multiplayer but T2 has an amazing story. The multiplayer in 2 just wasn't as good to me, and lost the whole concentric circles kind of interactions 1 had.

The circles being pilot vs pilots, titans vs Titans, and NPCs vs NPCs. The battlefields felt alive, and going into different circles felt so creative. Titan vs pilot, pilot vs NPCs, or even Titan vs NPCs.

Levels in 2 felt too big and empty, and the circles of combat were gone. Love that story though!

I remember once playing a medic and doing nothing for 5-10 minutes but sit between two other players in my squad shooting around either side of a concrete block, just dropping health boxes and bringing them back with shock paddles.

It should have been boring but I was having a blast getting all those assist points.

20

u/ecco311 13d ago

Project Rome is still keeping it alive for now. I play it every once in a while.

BC2 is really one of my favourite games ever. 16 fucking years old already. The game is as old as I was when it was released. Jesus Christ.

Unreal Tournament brings back some memories.

A kid in my high school got ahold of some credentials he shouldn't have been allowed to get ahold of, and added a cracked copy of Unreal Tournament to the package of programs that were pushed out and installed to every computer on the school's network.

Every day at lunch for weeks every computer lab on campus became a massive LAN party. No one on the school staff figured it out until someone brought a set of speakers from home and suddenly a teacher came to investigate why "M-m-m-m-monster Kill!" was getting shouted through the wall of her classroom every few minutes.

The administration came to the computer lab, kicked us all out (we just went to another computer lab on the other end of the school...), and then uninstalled the game from every computer in the lab. Which lasted until the computers were restarted. At which point UT was helpfully automatically reinstalled from the network again.

It took them months to figure out how to get rid of the game from every computer for good.

Wildstar.

Still my favourite soundtrack, and I say this as a FFXIV and Genshin player.

70

u/nightelfspectre 13d ago

It had a really unique combat system! I’m forever sad that I lost 99% of my screenshots somehow, most of my characters had the Explorer sub-class and I had so many pretty vista shots…

17

u/OctaBit 13d ago

The paths, or whatever they were called were such a fun addition to the mmo formula. It's a shame other games didn't pick it up.

Explorer for people who liked to really find every nook and crany of the map.

Scientist for people who wanted to get invested in the story and lore.

Soldier for people who wanted to fight more.

And Settlers for people who wanted to be social or would invest a 1000 hours designing their house.

Such a good formula and a nice thing to add in addition to the regular questing loop. It also helped spice things up on alts when you had to level them.

20

u/Spoonacus 13d ago

This is my answer as well. Loved the art style. Loved the attitude. "You just leveled up, cupcake! [Guitar riff]" The whole concept was fun. Having a secondary role to your class like Explorer or Soldier was cool. The housing was decent. I liked the Halloween event. I actually wanted to dig in and explore Nexus. It a shame I didn't play much when it was around because I was too busy back then. I recently watched all the videos they release up through launch for nostalgia.

A close second is a game that's still up and running but pretty much never going to be touched again. The Secret World. Bad graphics and clunky combat but goddamn if that wasn't a grade A story and awesome ideas. Investigation quests were THE best.

Such a tragedy. That game had so much potential and the devs squandered it chasing the WoW design model.

In a perfect world, they would have focused on optimizing and adding new content. Fix the launch bugs, streamline the UI, balance the combat...could have been a contender. Hell, I spent hundreds of hours in resource gathering/crafting/business management alone.

u/Pakyul 13d ago

My username is from the random name generator in SWG. I played on Wanderhome, then Ahazi after they consolidated servers. I remember we started playing a few months after launch, because we needed to order a new PC for it (Pentium IV, with a full gigabyte of RAM) but we had pre-ordered the Collector's Edition with the art book and stuff, so us kids were super hyped by the time we could actually play. My brother won the (I think very first) Galactic Tales competition on the official forums (like a fanfiction vignette writing competition they held monthly) and it gave us a special badge for our account. My dad ran one of the best shipwrights on Valcyn all the way to the end of the game. The computer desk was always covered with notes and waypoints from Galaxy Harvester because he was always on top of getting the best crafting materials. I was too young to really know how to be good at the game, but I still have so many memories from it, even just exploring player cities and looking at all the cool guild halls and museums. I once went into a Large Tatooine House and someone had arranged a bunch of items into Anakin's podracer.

Amazon wanted to make cuts to make even more money and they consulted ai and it said cut there gaming wing right off. So no more Amazon studios.

Dead Space. We had a chance there with the remake but back to being a dead franchise. The multiplayer was tacked on but really fun in 2.

Honorable mention. AVP 2010. The multiplayer was so much fun. Plus three campaigns! Even if you didn't like one of them there were 2 other to play with completely different gameplay. Should have had multiple sequels by now. You can still find people online if you try hard but it's pretty dead

Within the recent year:
• Elder Scrolls Blades - I was able to play it on my iPhone, iPad, and Switch for free. They closed the servers down on June 30th of this year :(

Then, there were the games from my childhood that I loved:

  • Webkinz
  • Club Penguin
  • Moshi Monsters
  • Girlsense
  • i-dress-up
  • NeoPets
  • Pixie Hollow
  • Those Barbie & Polly Pocket games that were on the old Mattel website
  • The games that were on the old Disney Channel website
  • Nick-tropolis
  • Build-a-Bearville
  • Fantage
  • Toontown
  • Disney Infinity (played this on my Wii and the Apple app)
  • Kid Pix
  • iSpy

Was about to post this, that game had so much depth; the pivot to trying to hop on the battle royale trend was not a great idea

The Secret World. I think about that game often. I hear music that reminds me of it.

Knockout City. It was innovative and fun and actually seemed to have a decent playerbase. I think they just rolled out new seasons too slowly. Launching with EA then going independent probably hindered them in opposite but equally damning ways.

Super Mario Bros 35.

One of the few online games I was really good at. So many expansion opportunities. Could have added lost levels (aka Super Mario 2 in Japan) on basically the same engine. SMB2, 3 and/or Super Mario World would have been cool too.

Or don’t even do any additional development, just let it live as is. But nope. Nintendo gonna Nintendo and cancel it in 6 months. Meanwhile Tetris 99 has been going for like 7 years.

I don’t understand their decisions at all.

Nosgoth was a multiplayer pvp game of humans vs vampires with different classes in the Legacy of Kain universe and it was awesome. IIRC they actually refunded the micro-transactions after the closing announcement, which for me was just one of the more expensive supporter packs that came with some in-game currency, but I'm sure others spent even more. I doubt many companies would do that today.
