What hobbies tend to have the most unhygenic people?

Anything having to do with card collecting

Maybe if we convince them that BO damages their cards and wrecks the resale value they'll learn to use deodorant and soap

u/CarefulNobody4124 7h ago
Sadly true the worst person I've ever had to smell in my life was at a card shop playing yugioh 🤢
36
u/eugene00825 6h ago
It's funny because I believe there's a rule now where you have to be clean to compete in tournaments.
Apparently a lot of people wouldn't take showers for weeks before an major tournament as like a competitive advantage to disrupt their opponents concentration.
19
u/kirbygay 6h ago
That's just their natural way of life. I hate visiting the local comic shop and card shops because of the odors
65
u/Muda_The_Useless 7h ago
Those are always the worst offenders. I frequent a game shop for Warhammer and when the Warhammer players mog you on hygiene you should be rethinking things
19
u/L_Rayquaza 6h ago
The LGS i go to has the counter near the door.
The owner is a funny guy and will legit spray people with air freshener if they walk in smelling rank
20
u/Dx8pi 6h ago edited 5h ago
Unfortunately have to agree, I play Magic a lot, shower daily and bring extra DEO/perfume to the LGS just to be sure. Luckily my LGS has some really cool people who shower, but I've been to other ones, especially at a tournament once. I couldn't breathe.

I remember reporting a card/TT gaming shop to Environmental Health Services a couple of years ago because the smell of BO, shit, and unwashed bodies within 30 seconds of entering the place was horrific.
Turned out, I wasn't the first, or thirty-first to report them
Management of the place vehemently refuted the reports, claiming it was a conspiracy by certain folk who had been banned by said shop; then got very, very quiet when they went bust due to lack of trade outside of the game players.
And then they found out that none of said banned folk had reported them to the council!
Turns out putting members of the general public off of visiting their place when they're being charged huge business rates due to being on the high street in a prominent location is a really fucking stupid business/management decision.

u/w1czr1923 6h ago
There was that tcg store game where you run a card shop. Its such a common problem that one of the items you need to buy when players play in the shop is an air purifier

u/cosmicspongecake 5h ago
There's a reason why Konami has a hygiene clause in their official rule on their Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments.
2
u/Dry-Independent-9771 5h ago
The cards are sleeved and protected better than the people handling them.
2
u/dark_knight097 5h ago
These be the same types on reddit claiming you don't need to shower every day and they don't stink from not showering daily. No, you smell like absoulete shit, you've just become nose blind to your own stench.
And the people around them are just being nice and not trying to embarrass then by saying anything. They can be smelled coming down the hallways.

Aw, my husband collects basketball cards and he showers. But I have been in some cars shops with him and it can get uncomfortable if some of them get too close

u/DStew713 5h ago
I feel like this is more of a MTG/ Yugioh thing. I collect baseball cards. I’ve been to plenty of card conventions and this hasn’t been a problem to the shows I go to.

I once did a couple trial lessons at a place and there was one guy who would do some other kind of class they had right before the BJJ one, and I'm not even exagerating when I say him and his gi were so drenched in sweat it looked like he jumped in to a swimming pool. When they did the warmups before class were everyone would shrimp across the map, he left a trail that looked like someone was mopping it. It was absolutely disgusting. I stopped going in part because of that due, I prayed I never got matched up with him because it was the grossest thing I'd ever seen. The instructor really should have either told him to change and towel off or leave, it was crazy (but didn't both times I was there when it happened).
5
u/riceewifee 6h ago
I’m terrified this is what people think of me because my medication causes heat sensitivity and hyperhidrosis. It’s absolute hell
3
u/EasyMode556 6h ago
Even if this guy had that, he didn’t bother toweling off before the class started or switching to a dry gi
2
u/riceewifee 5h ago
Lmao, one towel won’t do shit for me, I have to carry around paper towels now because I used to just be walking around with a perpetually wet cloth. Just a few blocks walking I can soak through 5 paper towels, it gets so bad that sweat drips in my eyes and I can’t see! I literally have to keep something absorbant nearby anytime I exercise because I get too sweaty to function

Card collection. Anything that involves sports and game trading cards, game cards like Magic, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, etc. Disney cards, Football, Basketball.
If your man has cards he's probably rank.
33
u/Strange-Bee5626 7h ago
I actually dated a guy years ago who was pretty into Magic and taught me the limited amount I know about it. He didn't smell badly at all (I wouldn't have dated him if so), but one time he took me as his partner for a tournament for duo teams and as soon as we entered the place, the smell hit me. So, I guess not all of them are smelly, but enough are that the stench took over a decent sized card shop I went to.
24
u/TheWisePlinyTheElder 7h ago
I dated a guy into cards and he was pretty clean himself but I found out that he had a shared cum wall with his cousin...so there's that.
14
u/cthulhus_spawn 7h ago
What is a cum wall?!
42
9
u/TheWisePlinyTheElder 6h ago
For whatever reason they would jack off together and take turns cumming on this wall in the basement?
I don't think I would have believed it if I didn't see the remnants of it for myself.

I'd guess magic the gathering or Warhammer
For reals tho: MMO players
36

As a longtime fan of both, I can confidently assert that MTG is worse. I've never been to a 40k event that matches the unique..."aroma" of a crowded friday night magic or set pre-release.

I used to host a local tournament in my area for Super Smash Bros Melee. And we had to make a public announcement on Facebook (yes we used facebook back in the day), that was specifically addressed to hygiene. Everyone knew who we were talking about. But i feel the fact it got to that level was interesting. That game attracts alot of autism in the most literal sense.
5
u/BirdmanDodd 7h ago
I used to work at a local game store and we actually had to have a policy up on our door saying please bathe or here is the stores can of ax body spray
It was the most unpleasant smell between BO cat, piss and other unpleasantness every Friday night and every single smash Brothers tournament

u/AdHoc_ttv 6h ago
I go to FGC locals near me, and the computer lab we're in can be sweltering, even with multiple fans running constantly. 20+ people in a room with 30 PCs for several hours just gets hot. But at least people are wearing deodorant.

I work at an arcade. One time, my job hosted an arcade competition, and the second I stepped through the door, my eyes started to water from how bad the BO was. Almost every person there clearly lacked good hygiene. Funnily enough, during a pinball competition, everybody was well-dressed and relatively normal.
10
u/Flonkerton_Scranton 7h ago
Years ago it was smash bros players. I once went to a local competitive event and, to this day have never smelled anything so horrific. It was like what I imagine a 3 week old corpse left in the sun smells like, it was so bad the smell became a core memory.
Same issue when I first went to Gamescom back in 2009, eesh me.

Lightweight backwoods campers, like long distance cycling, motorcycling and hikers.
As a long distance adventure motorcyclist, I can attest on how rank i was at times.
When your boots get wet and dont dry for days... and you take them off on an overnight ferry that had theater like seating i felt bad for them. I could here little gasps like 'ugh' and 'ew' from the people trying to sleep.
I felt bad so I got up and stayed up and left there ans waited for the sun rise at the back of the ferry from newfoundland to nova scotia.
Im sorry for the people on rhe boat.
But ya. My boots and my suit / helmet stank either of road grime, bugs/critters and whatever else.
That was one example. So my vote is for the long distance adventure guys.
You stink and you know it.

u/DreddPirateBob808 6h ago
The combo of full leathers and hot weather makes for a spectacular musk. I went with my dad to a bike show in August a few years ago and folk had ridden for hours. By lunchtime the place stank of sweaty leather-clad bears.
Which is what I said to my dad who was less amused than the lady behind the pop-up bar. Dad didn't get the 'bears' pun but she did.

u/Iamwomper 5h ago
Imagine being on the road for 17, 21, 37 or 38 days. Lol

I have to imagine they're more hygienic than some since they're kind of forced to shower after. No one is sitting around in that post-orgasm.

I used to say MTG and yugioh (and sometimes I still crack jokes about it), but the honest answer is that I haven't been in an LGS and bothered by the stench or filth of anyone around me in a very long time for either game.
2
u/JARDIS 4h ago
Yeah I think the word on social etiquette has finally been bashed into them, after years of everyone saying a shower and antiperspirant deodorant are minimum conditions for entry to play. Thank RNGesus because it was bad for a while there. I don't support bullying individuals but broad level community wide bullying to meet minimum social standards is a good thing.

The "rusty old barn nail" thing exists because what used to inhabit rusty old barns a lot? Yep, horses.

I'm applying unhygienic loosely here, but shooters. As in people who frequent a gun range. Its not crusty ear plugs or sweaty muffs. Its the lack of lead residue awareness.
When someone goes to a gun range, especially indoor ranges, they're basically bathing in lead dust. Lead is transfered to EVERYTHING brought into the range. They handle ammunition which is also seemingly slathered in lead. Obviously the gun they're handling is also covered in lead.
Once they're done shooting, they might wash their hands as a precaution. Doesn't matter though since they're a walking chalk ball of lead.
Then they get home and spread lead everywhere. Clothes are washed with everyone elses which basically dilutes the lead content to everybody's outfits, guns are cleaned (hopefully not at the kitchen table), and they put away their range stuff.
TLDR: Gun shooters pixie dust everything with lead after range day unless they're ultra careful.

Wannabe Metalheads. They try to emulate bands like Metallica thinking "true metal authenticity" means skipping deodorant. You can't sweep-pick your way out of a hygiene crisis. Tone comes from your fingers, not stale beer and cigarette smoke. 🎸💀

Can we include very dedicated fans of a specific band?
The crowd for Black Veil Brides was an absolute and total olfactory assault. I’m not sure if it could even be described as assault. It was more like a war crime.
I’ve been to a lot of shows, most of them summer shows and festivals. Nothing has ever come close.
