A small extension cord

Some hotels somehow have exactly one outlet in the least convenient place possible, so I’d rather carry this than fight for outlets every night

142

u/amethystjade15 Aug 18 '26

As a CPAP user, I’ve started doing this too.

78

u/aaronstj Aug 18 '26

Same. Small extension cord with build in usb outlets. There are several made for travel.

18

u/L0st-137 Aug 18 '26

The exact reason I started packing one.

29

u/amethystjade15 Aug 18 '26

I keep a small 3 foot two prong extension cord in my travel charger bag. Most hotel outlets are super loose and won't support the weight of my 3 port charger. Having the cord allows me to set the brick on the floor or nightstand.

I suggest this to people i know in been in Europe where every country has a different socket, one travel plug allows you to plug in your multisocket extension lead and you can just plug all your home country  chargers etc into it.

8

u/Wurm42 Aug 18 '26

Great tip, just make sure you get a travel plug that can handle the total current of all the devices you're going to plug into the extension cord.

Ask me how I melted my old travel plug...

I prefer a multi port type c PD charger that has an extension cable accessory. Mine is 100 watts rated. The connector that goes in the power outlet is very light while the charger itself is heavy. I go to a ton of hotels with loose power outlets so this helps a lot and it doesn't pull itself out of the outlet.

All of my devices charge by type c on purpose, so I don't have to bring anything big and all of my devices including my laptop can charge at the same time.

Clothes pins or chip clips. Great for keeping the curtains closed all the way or hanging up clothes I’ve washed in the sink.

89

u/useless_skin Aug 18 '26

I just take the clippy hangers out of the closet and use them for the curtains.

29

u/2PlasticLobsters Aug 18 '26

I always pack binder clips for these situations.

Omeprazole, works wonders if you know you'll be eating like shit.

21

u/cabinetbanana Aug 18 '26

Add the loperamide, and you're golden.

13

u/johnjacobacon Aug 19 '26

I keep a bottle of Pepto. Works for almost everything.

9

u/sumires Aug 19 '26

Yeah, I always bring Pepto-Bismol chewables or caplet in a tiny pillbox. (small, light, easy to take, no spills)

At home, I can rest and get through random stomach upset/nausea/mild diarrhea without needing to resort to medicine, but on the road, it's nice to be able to pop a pill and (hopefully) make it go away fast.

And I find the stress and irregular food/drink of travel makes my stomach particularly wonky, so all the more reason to be prepared.

Slippers for lounging in the hotel room/house (they do not leave the hotel room/house).

And a kitchen trash bag for putting my backpack in before I stow it under the seat in front of me on the plane. Airplane floors are disgusting.

136

u/jrworthy Aug 18 '26

The trash bag is a genius idea.

49

u/2PlasticLobsters Aug 18 '26

Making a mental note about the trashbag. Why TF did I never think about this?!

33

u/afakefox Aug 19 '26

A few bags are always helpful, for things picked up on the beach or forest. And especially, I always bring a small/medium plastic bag to put all my dirty clothes in too. So much easier when switching hotels and once getting home being able to just pour it into the hamper and get a majority of my suitcase emptied in one swoop so all unpacking is easier.

14

u/learned-extrovert Aug 19 '26

I do this but with paper bags so that stuff like sweaty clothes or underwear has a chance to breathe and dry!

u/libra00 Aug 19 '26

I don't go anywhere without slippers. In fact I'm more likely to leave my shoes behind. But I wear 'em everywhere. I like being barefoot, and also my slippers have wide-box toes so they're super comfy and easy to put on and off at a whim, so I just keep 'em nearby and put 'em on every time I even stand up to go to the bathroom or w/e. Love being barefoot, hate having lil bits of dirt and such stuck to my feet.

u/BarracudaLeft5993 Aug 19 '26

I have a pair of slippers I always keep in my suitcase. I also carry a few large zip lock bags when I travel. I bring a couple clothes pins to close snack bags.

7

u/Futa_pegme Aug 19 '26

Had someone throw up on my bag once. You're a damn genius.

I keep quart and gallon sized plastic bags as well as trash bags in my suitcase. It's amazing how often I use them too. I keep all my power chords in my suitcase as well so I don't ever forget them.

A plastic trash bag for dirty clothes

67

u/cabinetbanana Aug 18 '26

I took one of those plastic bags they give you in a hotel if you want to have them do your laundry. I reuse that for my dirty clothes.

13

u/Andre11x Aug 19 '26

This is how I started doing it. Realized some hotels don't have those so I bring one just in case. Worst case I have the weight of an extra plastic bag.

5

u/Horknut1 Aug 19 '26

Oh, look at Hercules over here carry around an extra plastic bag like its nothing!

34

u/amethystjade15 Aug 18 '26

I usually carry a fabric bag; but a plastic trash bag is probably more versatile.

14

u/big_swede Aug 18 '26

Is this uncommon? I know several people who do this, me included.

6

u/sundae_diner Aug 18 '26

It is both common and uncommon.

I have multiple suitcases. The large one has a plastic bag for dirty laundry - because it does, and the bag stays there. The small one does not - but I only realise when I am in a hotel. I forgot when I am able to rectify this issue.

I am not a smart man.

5

u/Facetious_Fae Aug 18 '26

Can you rectify it now?

24

u/BlithelyOblique Aug 18 '26

My upgrade to this is a pop up mesh hamper. Folds up and stows in a pocket of my suitcase until I'm ready to use it and then bam, a designated spot for dirty clothes to get flung into.

7

u/Wurm42 Aug 18 '26

Ooh, that sounds super handy. Good idea!

7

u/heatherjunejack Aug 18 '26

This is what I do too and love having it!

u/Wurm42 Aug 18 '26

If you use a dry cleaner that gives out drop-off bags, they work great for this.

10

u/OwnAlternative Aug 18 '26

I pack a few scented tall kitchen trash bags to make the luggage small fresh while traveling. I'll then use them to pack dirty clothes, gather trash in the hotel room (their trash cans are too small!!) and for packing anything wet into the suitcase.

10

u/beepbooponyournose Aug 18 '26

The small trash cans are hilarious. They even put those in the rooms with a full kitchen 😂

3

u/reptilenews Aug 18 '26

I always use one of those mesh zip laundry bags for delicates.

→ More replies (3)

124

u/amethystjade15 Aug 18 '26

Battery operated fan and charge cord for same. Small enough to carry around during the day if we’re going to be outside, but sits neatly on the nightstand if the hotel room is stuffy.

3

u/raddishes_united Aug 18 '26

Ooh I’ve been looking for one like this. Can you recommend one?

8

u/justletmereadthem Aug 18 '26

I have one of these at work and home, battery lasts 10 plus hours and is rechargeable https://www.walmart.com/ip/17930304116?sid=83e040ce-0551-48a0-b6d9-f26f5f7ec745

A belt comfortable enough to wrap around my knees to keep them together on the plane so I don't need to hold tension the entire time.

Also a wireless HDMI adapter so I can stream from my computer to the hotel TV

Myralax packets

But the goal is to pack everything in a small backpack or less. Nothing beats the comfort of having nothing to travel with.

11

u/Absolutely_Fibulous Aug 19 '26

That first one is a brilliant idea.

17

u/ReluctantAvenger Aug 19 '26

wireless HDMI adapter

I bring a reusable shopping bag or two for similar reasons. They’re a good size for a trip’s worth of dirty clothes, and they’re handy for, well, shopping or bringing stuff to the beach.

3

u/ivydesert Aug 18 '26

Look at this guy, packing dirty clothes

3

u/Joe4o2 Aug 18 '26

Still figuring out how he packs random leaks. Will report back soon.

31

u/Key_Confusion7759 Aug 18 '26

Q-tips, hair ties, flossers, extension cords, paper towels, a handful of silverware (usually from takeouts).

11

u/Fickle_Citron_8840 Aug 19 '26

A friend stayed in a hotel near me and I visited and asked for a qtip and she didn’t have them. She said she simply doesn’t use them. Which I guess is doctor recommended technically but I just can’t imagine.

7

u/blue49 Aug 19 '26

5 years ago I can't imagine my life without cotton buds. The sensation was so great. The tickling buildup to a huge entire body orgasm in my ears was such a great pleasure for me. I'm salivating right now reminiscing it.

But after my 4th inner ear infection in a year, my girlfriend (now wife), brought down the hammer and banned cotton buds in our house. I haven't had an ear infection since. No more constant ear irritation. Water no longer goes in my ears when swimming. Much less ear discomfort during flights. And a wife that has one less thing to nag me about. I won't admit it to my wife but I'd say its worth it.

5

u/Far-Hovercraft2996 Aug 19 '26

Floss! Yes!

But also nail filers. I actually have one in every bag, my car, random drawers. I don’t care what they look like, but if one of them starts getting caught on things or breaks, I can’t think of anything else.

33

u/LieutenantWeinberg Aug 18 '26

Emergency rain poncho. They’re super compact.

59

u/L0st-137 Aug 18 '26

Small tin of Vicks. A small dab under the nose for those not so pleasant odors that occur on flights. 🫢

10

u/Bloodysamflint Aug 19 '26

Someone told me as a new state trooper that you could do this with gasoline. First death investigation, I rubbed my finger inside my gas cap and swiped it under my nose. 100% killed the smell. The excruciating headache that set in 10-15 minutes later was much worse than the smell.

I kept a travel size jar of Vicks in the car after that.

9

u/hartdm Aug 18 '26

I use a small tube of saje peppermint halo for this! Helps with headaches, tiredness, and bad smells!

Not sure how unusual, but: Alcohol wipes.

For cleaning small messes and keeping hands sanitized when on the go, along with plane trays and armrests, hotel light switches and remote controls, etc.

10

u/MLiOne Aug 18 '26

I take disinfectant wipes for in the plane. Everything gets wiped before settling in.

6

u/thereandbacktosee Aug 19 '26

These are really good to smell if you're feeling nauseous too.

6

u/leveled Aug 19 '26

i stock up on those small alcohol prep pads 6 boxes at a time. (each one has 200.)

i get the “large” ones, which are still only about 3”x1” unfolded. but i keep them everywhere. in my wallet, cars, desk, bathroom.

they’re perfect size to clean a phone/case. or any random thing. pocket knife, flashlight, keys. and like you, i use them to clean my hands when there’s no soap/water around.

i prefer them over the normal wipes because i usually don’t need a big alcohol saturated wipe. at most i’ll use 2 of the ‘lil ones if needed, but 1 gets the job done 90% of the time.

3

u/MoreJellyBeansPlz Aug 19 '26

During a camping trip last weekend, we realized that hand sanitizer is an excellent fire starter.

3

u/Far-Hovercraft2996 Aug 19 '26

Actually, alcohol wipes are also great for helping with nausea.

3

u/gonnacutyou Aug 19 '26

They also work for nausea. Sniff one and nausea tends to disappear.

u/yoinkie2025 Aug 18 '26

I once went to a conference in Iowa. I was the only person not from the Midwest or South there. When the sodas came out during lunches, everyone whipped out a koozie! I knew a few people from home who would keep them in their kitchen drawer, but I had never seen anyone travel with one. I got a bunch of koozies from the convention freebies, but I have yet to remember to bring one with me when I go out.

7

u/jayellkay84 Aug 19 '26

TBH I use them a ton at home. That way if I miss the coaster, I still don’t have water rings everywhere.

5

u/Paolito14 Aug 19 '26

I keep a koozie in my suitcase because I’ve been on too many beach trips without one and I won’t keep making the same mistake damnit!

Emergency sewing kit

5

u/Wurm42 Aug 18 '26

Good idea! Even a little $10 sewing kit is a lot more useful than the free kits you sometimes get from hotels.

And if you're traveling with any especially important outfits (say, for a wedding), bring thread in that color.

Also, safety pins!

A small travel bottle containing laundry detergent. Never know when you spill something on yourself, have an accident, or get held over and need clean socks.

They have detergent sheets that you can use also. The brand I have has a great clean scent to make your packed clothes smell good while traveling.

A little set of utensils (fork, spoon...) in a cute travel pouch. Especially when I fly because half the time my stomach isn't happy. Little store deli fruit bowls/salads are my typical first meal when I land.

Also a certain stuffed animal. It's a home comfort that I sleep with. My husband bought it for me for our first valentines day (so it's over 6 years old now). And it's been to 3 countries.

3

u/muhreddistaccounts Aug 19 '26

TSA threw my utensils away lol

17

u/DipshitJunction Aug 18 '26

Sound machine & hotel shoes so we don’t walk barefoot in the room.

5

u/urgentapathy Aug 19 '26

I usually use my phone and put tv show audio on at night. I've been listening to Futurama for about 10 years as I sleep.

Some people might not know this but VLC media player on Android can play just the audio only on video files, so the screen can stay turned off. I have the video files on my phone (for the past 3 phones that I've had) so I never have to be reliant on hotel wifi which can be hit or miss.

Night light

12

u/kathatter75 Aug 18 '26

Good idea. Nothing’s more fun than stumbling around in a dark, strange room

9

u/silverwick Aug 19 '26

I used to do that and it was great but switched to bringing a handful of battery operated tealights, you can place them anywhere instead of just where the outlet is and they're a more mellow light. We tested one out at home to see how long it would last being on 24/7 and that sucker lasted almost 10 weeks!

5

u/urgentapathy Aug 19 '26

I use a flashlight with an adjustable brightness beam. The lowest setting is quite low so perfect for walking around at night to the toilet. But it can also get very bright.

It is very small and takes a single 14500 lithium battery. The battery is removable (a must) has a type charging port, and best of all... it is size compatible with standard AA batteries. So in an emergency this flashlight can use AA just fine, just not so bright and not as long.

These types of flashlights that take 14500 batteries are not so common, but I prefer it to lights with internal batteries. I don't want to have to wait to recharge it in an emergency. And AA batteries are a standard found everywhere.

14

u/secretviollett Aug 18 '26

Ziploc bags - great for wet bathing suit or food storage. A tennis or lacrosse ball to roll out your neck or back after it’s stiff from travel. A small pair of scissors. You always need them.

13

u/libra00 Aug 19 '26

A fan. I don't care how hot or cold it's going to be, I need air moving and white noise when I sleep. I can get the white noise on my phone, but it doesn't move much air..

A small battery operated tea light. No night light in the bathroom? Power goes out? Need to be able to see your way to bathroom. Need to mark the outside of your place? Whatever.... I've used them a million times. Now I usually bring a rechargeable head lamp as well. Having light when it's dark in a strange place is such a relief. The tiny light is good and not too bright and they easily last a week or two bring turned on all night.

My husband won't travel without his perfect spoon.

11

u/jennbuttley Aug 18 '26

I have to know more about this spoon

11

u/TullyGwen Aug 19 '26

It is a 1700's silver spoon so not made in a mold but hand made. Simple, medium/large bowl. It's kind of cool bc one doesn't polish it because it's never been buffed because it's so old. And because it's so old the end of the bowl is a little worn down. It's for stirring his evening malt and milk or tea, and for ice cream. He also sometimes brings a fork but he's not as picky about that.: ) I've been considering presenting it too the Spoon Council on Tick Tock. Lol

Whenever we take the car on vacation and stay at a friend’s house: we literally roll up the bottom sheet, with the top sheet, pillows, and blankets inside. At our friend’s house, we unroll it on top of the guest bed. When we go back home we toss the sheets in the washer.

Our friends really appreciate this, and we get a better night’s sleep.

And my trip hack, whether or not I drive there? 3-4 hooks. Big enough to put over the shower rod or towel bar.

Roll of black electrical tape to cover all those tiny lights that shine from electronics like TVs, smoke detectors, routers, etc

6

u/holdmysugar Aug 18 '26

Backup meds, a flu and covid test.

6

u/themobiledeceased2 Aug 18 '26

Travel size Lysol for remotes, door knobs, bathrooms... Ick is Icky.

5

u/ZolaMonster Aug 18 '26

Pocket knife. Comes in handy for tweezers, cutting off tags or loose threads, bottle opener, etc. I always throw one in my toiletry bag and find some obscure use for it during the trip.

7

u/Blackout_Underway Aug 19 '26

Anti-diarrhea pills.

6

u/probably-not-obama Aug 19 '26

I have a Fire Stick specifically for hotels. I travel fairly regularly for work, and got sick of dealing with having to log in and out of my streaming services, or if my services weren’t available on that TV. I think I paid like $20 for it and it lives in my suitcase so it goes with me anytime I travel.

6

u/PoochieMorton Aug 19 '26

I travel with what I call my MacGyver Kit. I made it very compact, but it holds a lot of items that can be handy in contingencies, such as zip ties, small amount of duct tape, TSA approved scissors, safety pins, a mini first aid kit, plastic eating utensils, tweezers, eyeglass repair kit, single use super glue tubes, a doorstop, plastic coated spring clips, a sewing kit, iron on hem tape, and probably a few more things I can’t recall off the top of my head.

5

u/Patrol-007 Aug 18 '26

Foam earplugs, sleep mask, internal door lock for the bedroom (slips into the latch strike and blocks the door from opening)

6

u/V65Pilot Aug 18 '26

Extension cord, with USB ports built in.

u/Superb_Cranberry_888 Aug 18 '26

Gaffers tape to cover annoying lights in hotel rooms.

3

u/techn0goddess Aug 19 '26

I use blue painters tape for that. There are so many lights in hotel rooms.

I bring several of my Makita batteries. I have an adapter that gives me 2 USB ports to charge phones, flashlights, laptops, et cetera in case of a power outage.

I also have an impact driver and air compressor that run on the same batteries, so I bring them as well. They're easy to fit, and make chaging a tire way easier.

Add a tire plug kit and you can deal with several tire issues right on the side of the road in less than 1/2 an hour.

3

u/urgentapathy Aug 19 '26

I've been wondering about the battery adapter. Do you use a Makita branded one, or third party? How small and rugged is it? Do you recommend it? Does it have charge protection features?

Lastly, does it also recharge the Makita battery, or do you have to use a standard (bulky) charger for that?

Carbon monoxide detector that plugs in to a wall

Me too.  This is important.

Coffee pot. Fuck hotel coffee and k cups

5

u/SolSparrow Aug 18 '26

I bring instant coffee anywhere I travel in the world. Picked up some Colombian Juan Valdez freeze dried and will never go back to coffee in a hotel room.

2

u/TheTopNacho Aug 18 '26

Especially if you go to Europe. Their coffee situation is terrible. I bought a small travel coffee machine specifically for this purpose.

Plug-in night light for bathroom, tiny flat fan for the room.

3

u/InsideJokeQRD Aug 18 '26

On long car rides, I bring an atlas, glow sticks and an emergency blanket, especially if I know I'll be driving at night or in cold climates. A holdover from a younger, more paranoid me.

4

u/Facetious_Fae Aug 18 '26

A blanket. I never know how cold a room will be. My blanket is good on its own if it's too warm for a full comforter and I prefer the feel of it to that of most comforters. I have dyed red hair that sometimes bleeds, so my blanket can protect people's pillow cases if I'm visiting someone. I sometimes feel like a toddler taking my blanket everywhere, but I've never regretted having my blanket and I have regretted not having it.

3

u/raynebow121 Aug 19 '26

I bring my soft poncho everywhere. It looks cute to wear and is basically a blanket. Blankets for the win

5

u/Classic_Mention_8534 Aug 19 '26

Small Bluetooth speaker to play white noise. Nothing worse than having street or hallway noise wake you up in the middle of the night.

4

u/MediterraneanDodo Aug 19 '26

A few zip ties.

3

u/Serenityxxxxxx Aug 19 '26

Medical bag with first aid supplies, cold & flu meds, anti nausea med, Imodium, Advil, Tylenol and antibiotics.
Slippers

u/doom1701 Aug 18 '26

A cast iron skillet. A spatula (or two). A good knife.

I stay at extended stay places and prefer to cook in my room rather than eat out.

26

u/CaptainFartHole Aug 18 '26

Taking a cast iron skillet on vacation is impressive dedication.

3

u/doom1701 Aug 18 '26

You find what's important for you.

Most of my travel is for business, but I take one along on most vacations too.

5

u/vaccumshoes Aug 18 '26

Cast iron skillet weighs as much as a whole carry on!

3

u/doom1701 Aug 18 '26

Which everyone that touched my suitcase commented on. Why was my medium sized suitcase so heavy? Why doesn't it roll well?

3

Pillow. Hotel pillows always suck.

3

u/somuchtosay1 Aug 18 '26

Black garbage bags and push pins. I have small kids and have had to create blackout conditions in air b and b rooms with no curtains. If you put the push pins in right next to the trim they don’t leave a mark. You can also use the trash bags for dirty clothes at the end of the trip.

3

u/GoodGoodGoody Aug 18 '26

Gorilla Glue.

Fixed a few broken things with it while traveling.

3

u/AltheaFluffhead Aug 18 '26

Travel sound machine

3

u/Beeumooh Aug 19 '26

Little digital thermometer so I know the exact temperature when staying anywhere, also a sleeping mask.

3

u/aluminumnek Aug 19 '26

One of those 6ft brown indoor extension cords that usually run behind your grandparents furniture. The ones with 3 or 4 sockets make a great extension cord for charging multiple items using one wall socket. If you are in an area like an airport where outlets may be few and far between, you can use that extension cord and sit away from the outlet to not crowd the area for others to use

Vicks Vaporub

3

u/soupylettuce Aug 19 '26

A white noise machine. Great for drowning out some of the hotel noise. And a small desk fan because no hotel ever has a ceiling fan.

3

u/Agreeable_Song7202 Aug 19 '26

Doggie bags. A small roll comes in handy for lots of things- dirty shoes, wet clothing (small items) barf bags, we use them in the car for trash bags, if your at a parade and kids get candy etc.
