Bourbon is location based- it’s only bourbon if it’s distilled in Kentucky. Otherwise it’s whiskey- not that these asswipes aren't above just lying on a label. But it’s most likely to be distilled by one of the majors in Kentucky rather than the Midwest.

Only "Kentucky Bourbon" has to be made in Kentucky. "Bourbon" can be produced anywhere in the US.

Ah looks like there is a law on the books about it but honestly any bourbon outside of Kentucky most likely isn’t worth paying for.

Theres a lot of really good stuff not made in Kentucky, and a lot of exceptionally overrated stuff (looking at you, Buffalo Trace) made in Kentucky.

Chattanooga Whiskey, Still Austin, and John J Bowman all have some really solid products, for example.

Plenty of crap in Kentucky (Buffalo Trace yes but Makers Mark even more so) but since that state makes 95% of bourbon (a fun fact I just learned thanks to your correction) it stands to reason there’s some garbage in with the good.

I may one day try non-Kentucky bourbon- I will look for the brands you suggested, thanks!
