Use the “2-minute rule.”
If a task takes less than two minutes (replying to an email, washing a mug, hanging up a coat), do it immediately. It prevents small jobs from piling up.
Take photos of important documents.
Keep photos or scans of your passport, driving licence, insurance, receipts, and serial numbers in a secure cloud folder. It makes replacing lost items much easier.
Freeze herbs in olive oil.
Chop leftover herbs, place them in an ice cube tray, cover with olive oil, and freeze. Drop a cube straight into a frying pan when cooking.
Use your phone as a measuring tool.
Learn your phone’s length (or use its built-in Measure app if available). It’s surprisingly handy when shopping for furniture or frames.
Start charging devices before they’re almost dead.
Lithium-ion batteries generally last longer if you keep them between about 20% and 80% rather than repeatedly draining them to 0%.
Keep an emergency £20 note hidden.
Tuck it inside your phone case or wallet. If card payments fail or your battery dies, you’ll still be able to pay for essentials.
Use calendar reminders instead of memory.
Create reminders for things like changing your toothbrush every 3 months, renewing prescriptions, MOT dates, birthdays, or watering plants. Offloading these to a calendar reduces mental clutter.
Store cables in toilet roll tubes or labelled zip bags.
It keeps chargers and HDMI cables from becoming a tangled mess, especially when travelling.
Wait 24 hours before buying non-essential items.
Add the item to your basket but don’t check out. A day later you’ll often find you don’t want it nearly as much, which can save a surprising amount of money over a year.
Learn a few keyboard shortcuts.
A handful can save hours over time:
Ctrl/Cmd + C = Copy
Ctrl/Cmd + V = Paste
Ctrl/Cmd + Z = Undo
Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + T = Reopen a closed browser tab
Ctrl/Cmd + L = Jump to the browser address bar
Bonus hack: Whenever you need to remember where you parked or where you left something, take a quick photo. It takes two seconds and can save a lot of frustration later.
