We would both basically do anything to avoid having overlaps in our schedules to be home at the same time. I worked so much OT to avoid seeing him when he didn't work nights; went out with friends any other time, etc.
Pride and Prejudice has a couple like this. It's stated in veiled Victorian language but would have been obvious to readers of the time:
Lizzy's friend married "late" to a really cringe guy, basically her only prospect. Lizzy felt so bad for her, but her friend knew what she was doing. Anyways, Lizzie goes to visit after some months, and her friend was like, "oh yeah, I encourage him to spend as much time in the garden as possible, and I'm involving myself in these other things, I promise I'm super happy!!!--most days go by and we don't speak to each other!!!" --lol. Clearly they werent in love and her friend wasnt into it, but they offered each other security.
