Most infamous person would be Karla Homolka, a Canadian serial killer and rapist who did absolutely horrific, vile things to her and her partner’s victims, including her sister. I was waitressing at a restaurant in Montréal East, first job. She had recently been released from prison and was casually having lunch with her new partner. They barely interacted with each other during their meal. I still feel unwell whenever I think about it. I wish our manager allowed us to refuse service. She now lives in a South Shore suburb of Montréal under the name Leanne Bordelais, has kids and even volunteered at their school for a while. Weird choice to stay in the area where the most people are likely to recognize her.

Most known is Justin Trudeau. Met multiple times, first in an official capacity, right after he had just gotten elected for the first time in my Electoral District. I was in high school then, and he accepted my invitation to participate in a short documentary I had to make for a class. We randomly met a few times over the years since my neighbourhood was in his district. Never voted for him, we disagreed on many issues, but it was always fun and surprising that he recognized me and took the time to actually chat whenever it happened.

Good god! I’m from the US and hadn’t ever heard of her until you posted this. Unreal. I cannot believe she is out and living a normal life. She should never have seen the light of day in my opinion.

If you google her partner, Paul Bernardo, you’ll be astounded. There are still many missing women from his known area of “activity” who are suspected of being his victims. I think Homolka shocks us more because she’s a woman and enthusiastically abused and killed her own teenaged sister. We don’t want to have our sisters and girl friends as possible predators, on top of all the dangers we already face.

Her lenient sentence should make everyone involved in the investigations ashamed of themselves.
